DELETED posted:It's also the only wasp killer Skyssx posted:Fire? combine these two ideas and you win. Seriously, you haven't lived until you try it. You probably haven't died till you try it, either. I use non chlorinated brakleen which is basically acetone and heptane. Works great for everything from starting fires to distressing the neighbors to cleaning anything off anything else (I use it to wash my hands when I'm done with working on the jeep, takes 30sec and leaves them entirely clean, if needing a bit of a wash just to remoisturize) to cleaning brake hardware. Grab the rotor by the center hole, hose both sides down, hang it on the lugs, load your pads into the caliper, hose them down, slap it on, and you're done. No gloves needed. A 5 gallon pail full of acetone is great for cleaning parts too, and you only really have to buy it once, just fill it up and scrub parts off in it, then recap it when you are done. It costs a lot to fill the first time at $16/gallon but doesn't take long to break even if you consider how much brake cleaner costs.

In every shop I've worked in brake clean is like Frank's Red Hot, we put that poo poo on everything, and yes, it definately gets used as bug killer. Brake clean is right up there with WD and duct tape on the man-scale. As for rotors and pads, they dont need to be babied. As long as they are pretty clean with no non-human lubricants on them they're fine. I just put new rotors on my Miata this morning, no brake clean so I just used an assload of windex and scrubbed them really well with a rag. And I scuffed up the pads with sand paper. Perfecto.

Wash your rotors with dish soap and a scotch-brite pad in the kitchen sink. Dry. Install as recommended.

I try to buy coated rotors where I can so I don't have to deal with cleaning that crap. Also because every time I look at rusty, flaking rotor vanes I feel like they're a mechanical failure on their own right, as I doubt a spongy rust layer is conducive to getting rid of heat. Not to mention issues with the hat seating improperly on the hub due to rust, getting stuck, etc. etc. None mine and probably not a rust related failure but it's a picture at any rate:

Actually had an old friend of mine die in a plane crash a bit ago from a horrible mechanical failure in his light aircraft. He was only twenty one and one of my best friends freshman year of college was his passenger. I don't know why but looking at these pictures of all these failures makes me feel oddly a bit better. (That or the Civil Engineer inside me just likes looking at things break)

What's the best way to clean up after you've stripped your paint with that? The previous owner painted my e30 like 3 different colors, so I need to fully strip it and bring it to a shop to get painted. This poo poo makes it looks like a pretty easy job. I'll make sure to shut the garage door while I'm in it during this process.

I'd probably dry it off with a rag and then hose down with my favorite solvent ever, brakleen. I think I need to pick some of this stuff up, along with a set of replacement filters for my respirator mask.

I prefer the mar-hyde tal-strip gel aircraft remover. It's awesome to strip wheels fast and cheap, oxidized clear is no match for that stuff. I usually brush it on in the shade, let it sit for 15-20 minutes while using a plastic scraper to lift anything stubborn looking, and then powerwash it off. The best part is the radioactive green color that tells you that you should be wearing gloves but as long as you don't let it sit on your skin for very long it doesn't burn in my experience.

I hope you guys are thankful that I did all this research at no-one, really's request: Here's an ms-ds so we can see whats actually in aircraft remover: (link to .pdf file) http://www.wmbarr.com/ProductFiles/A3900.2.pdf Here's a list of "hazardous components", which I'm not sure if that's also a verbatim list of active ingredients, but it seems adequate to satiate our curiosity: quote:Hazardous Components (Chemical Name) quote:Note to Physician So we all know what methanol is; methyl aclohol, a solvent, fuel, and also the undesirable biproduct found in bad moonshine that will make you go blind. Apparently it metabolizes into formaldehyde [which you should recognize as enbalming fluid] and formic acid. WTF is formic acid... I swear I recognize that name... oh yeah its the active ingredient in ant and bee venom. Interestingly, its the simplest carboxylic acid; it was the first decontaminating agent used to clean operating and hospital rooms, a breakthrough which was later directly linked to profoundly decreased incidence of infection. Formic acid's name comes from the latin word for ant - "formica" - because it was first isolated by a distillation process from ants themselves. So we have formic acid to thank for sterility as a common practice in modern medicine. Oh yeah, and it is a substance that is metabolized when we absorb methanol through the skin. So this poo poo is essentially several organic solvents, some polar [methanol] and some non-polar [the other petroleum distillates]. Among the latter, Dichloromethane is curious because not only is it a super volatile solvent, but (perhaps directly linked to this characteristic) its boiling point is so low it works awesome in heat engines (e.g. sterling engines). You know that weird little bird that rocks back and forth and "drinks" water from a cup with a bulb full of colored liquid? Its full of Dichloromethane. You know those bubble lights that you put on your christmas tree and one spontaneously exploded and stained the couch while everyone was outside on christmas day and no-one believed that you weren't even anywhere near it when it happened and blamed you? Dichloromethane. So that's that. Thank you for reading far, far more than you ever wanted to know about "aircraft remover". I blame wikipedia for making me this way.

This happened to an S2000 at a local autocross: Lower ball joint screw backed out and then sheared off at the cotter pin holes. Lower control arm dropped down, contacted the inside of the rim, and then acted like a lathe bit, cutting the wheel in half.

My dad had like a 30 year old paint can of some sort of industrial carb dip, I dunked one of my old carbs and it came out shiny new in about a minute. Got some on my hands and it seriously felt like I had poured boiling water all over them instantaneously. Wonder what it was.
