From reading reviews on Glassdoor is seems RS is a great place to get your foot in the door and move up, but not so great for experienced folks looking to move into more senior positions. Quite a few GD reviews mention below market rate, inflexible hiring terms, issues with management, etc.

But it is extremely, EXTREMELY departmentalized. This was the biggest thing that I disliked. Anyway, with that said, I absolutely loved the company. I'd never worked anywhere that seemed to care so much about its training and employee programs. I've recommended it to many people, which I've actually never done before. I've worked at a huge number of large webhosts, and most of them are so absolutely lovely it's disgusting. RS was the polar opposite. Edit: I forgot, if you're not married and young and like to go out - don't let them convince you to move to SA. If you're married and settled down, SA isn't bad, it's cheap too. As a young single person, SA was the most deplorable place that I've ever lived. vty is pretty spot on for the most part. I trust you were netsec prior? When were you with the company; I'm sure you'll recall that a lot changes very rapidly. The day to day will vary based on the team you're in for sure; I can't speak to netsec on that front, though. Don't put too much emphasis on what Glassdoor says about senior positions. It's not unreasonably difficult to move up and the company in general tries to be pretty transparent about the whole process. That said, at the very, very upper echelon (significantly higher than a senior sysadmin position) Rackspace historically hasn't had much to offer, though this is changing. Pay has been/is being adjusted for more senior level positions, though it still seems like the general consensus is that it's not quite what it should be. For lower/mid level positions it's pretty good especially when you consider the additional non-monetary benefits. Also, SA isn't that bad.

I think it's time for a move from my current position, so I'm putting this out there to see if I'm a fit for anyone. Job Seeker My Experience 15+ years of Linux System Administration, Debian and RedHat Enterprise Linux. 10+ years of HTML/CSS/Javascript web development, I would describe myself as an expert in object oriented Javascript and web programming, I do heavy AJAX/DHTML/HTML5 whatever you want to call it work. I'm familiar with jQuery, YUI and Prototype. I also have quite a bit of experience programming in Perl on a LAMP stack. I've also done some Python and PHP. My particular area of interest is in building user interfaces for the web. What I'm Looking For A Telecommuting Job where I can put my Web development skills to use building simple easy to use web interfaces. I'm a big fan of the Apple school of user interface design where what you leave OUT of your interface is almost as important as what you put in. I'd also be interested in a Linux Sysadmin job, if it had some programming involved in it as part of the job. Maybe building user interface tools for sysadmins as that's what I've done in my current job What I'm Not Looking For Tech support roles. Where I Live Conway, AR Where I'm Looking I really need to telecommute. I have family here and moving just isn't an option right now. But I have good high speed internet access and I'm not afraid to use IRC, IM, Skype whatever in order to work collabroatively at a distance. I interviewed with Rackspace a few times and I have to agree at least from an "outside looking in" perspective. I kind of got the feeling that when I joined a team I wouldn't be able to sort of dabble with other junk on the side. Though, I understand moving around isn't to difficult so its probably a non-issue. I live in SA (young and married) and every time someone hears I am an IT person they ask me if I work at Rackspace. No, no I don't. I actually had a good interview with the NetSec team recently, they seem like a bunch of cool guys and someone could learn a lot there. All of my friends hail it as the second coming of Christ for IT people. But, they all work there, so perhaps that says something about employee treatment. Maybe one day I will work there, time will only tell. Currently working as a NetSec guy elsewhere.

My boss just sent me an email and my company is doing some pretty heavy hiring right now for Java Developers from entry level to mid/upper level, System Integrators and SOA (Service Oriented Arch.). There are at least 18 total job openings and something like 2050 total in the jobs system which you can look at after you get an account. Most of these openings are for either CNS/ATM (Communication, Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Monitoring) or C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance). Doing software development or related activities. Most positions also require some level of clearance which the company might help you obtain depending on the job. If you don't have clearance don't let it stop you from applying. I don't work directly in either of these areas so I can't really comment on what you would do day to day. I also believe that all of the openings are in the Baltimore area. We also get every other Friday off. I took out all references to the actual company name but if you PM/email me I'll tell you who it is. My experience: 5 years of IT consulting, driving around fixing everything from gunked up ball-mice, crashed Exchange databases, or leaky pipes (yeap). Did a lot of project work (network overhauls, server migrations/upgrades, cabling runs, patch panel work, etc) and a lot of break-fix stuff. I'm the guy that our clients ask for when they call, and most of the time if I'm not available they'd rather wait and endure whatever problem they have then let someone else try to fix it. What I'm looking for: A company where I can fit into a small IT team and have fun. What I'm NOT looking for: Something where I'm the only technical person in the building Where I live: Providence, RI Where I'm looking: Preferably Providence. I'm not opposed to a commute but I've been driving 60 miles round trip every day for over 4 years and the gas is killing me. When I can start: Just give me two weeks. Who are we? A managed services provider in Manhattan. We provide IT services for a broad range of companies and industries, from three-person trading and import operations to nationwide enterprise consumer products manufacturing and distribution. Desktop support and helpdesky stuff are going to be a bunch of what you do, but there's plenty of systems administration work that you'll be doing too. Lots of VMware, Exchange, and Cisco VPN/Sonicwall. Where are we? The Garment District of Manhattan, between Port Authority and Penn Station. Easily accessible from either as well as mass transit. What are we looking for? Help desk, sysadmin types - if you have done your time as helpdesk and desktop support, and have some server knowledge, this is a great way to expand your knowledge. My experience: 5 years of contract work for a gaming event company doing "light" project management and hardware/software troubleshooting/replacement/repair on gaming computers. I got my BS in MIS with the IA option from Oklahoma State University in December 2010. What I'm looking for: Entry-Level IT work, most likely something in infrastructure. Who are we? Southern Oregon University Where are we? Ashland, OR What are we looking for? Someone that can use task management skills to handle all the things that get thrown at you. You'll use SQL and Python, at the very least. Knowing SQL is pretty essential. You don't need to be an expert, just be able to write select statements which can sometimes be complex. If you don't know Python but know other languages and can learn new ones, that's fine. You get to admin the parking db, setup the rules within the system for tuition and fees to they're applied automatically and correctly, minor IT support within the department when things break. There's an IT dept, so you'd work with them on larger issues. Need to have customer service skills since you will talk with people at time. That's it in a nutshell. It's a mix of IT support and also non-IT procedural type stuff, so someone that's a hardcore IT guy might not like the mix. How might I describe it? You would be supporting an office of 40ish engineers/developers (there is a small sales group too) as your primary role, hence the position being called Desktop Support. Because you will be the only Desktop Support guy up here I require that you have a few years of related experience under your belt, this is a mixed Windows/Linux environment so being familiar with linux is beneficial (you won't touch it much though). Also you have to be able to work with people, seriously you're going to be talking to people every day, if you can't do that then you're not qualified. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto and the IT department is located there so you'll be communicating with them occasionally but for the most part you are working independently. To sum it up:
Now that I've got that out of the way, this is actually a pretty fun position as you'll be able to work on projects and expand your skillset however you like. It's a pretty relaxed office and since you're supporting engineers/developers the tickets you'll get will be somewhat challenging (very few stupid tickets). As you noticed I'm not sugar coating the description as I want you to know exactly what you'll be doing, don't be intimidated by it for as long as you've got the experience to back yourself up you'll have no problems. And regarding SharePoint 2010 you primarily need to be familiar with what it is and how it works as you'll be trained on Administering it by me. How do I apply? This got a little wordier than I expected, but it's full of truth. Who are we: A small Marketing Firm that works with non-profits mostly in Direct Mail, but starting to do more with Online. Where are we: Bowie MD (between Washington DC, Annapolis and Baltimore) What we're looking for: An IT guy (gender non-specific). Help Desk or Junior Net Admin or whatever. This is a jack of all trades position. Someone who can sit down with me and bounce ideas around, do a little research, figure out why something is a good or bad idea, and help implement it. There are projects from time to time that require some real work, (and sometimes nights and weekends, rarely)so you need to be OK with that too. About the environment (technical): A couple of Windows 2008 R2 servers and a couple Windows 2003 servers. We are also using Hyper-V to virtualize a few more machines. 2 custom built apps that we do nothing with except maintain the servers. A brand spanking new domain with brand spanking new laptops. GPO have these machines on lock down, and issues are almost non-existent. A reboot or logoff/logon fixes almost every issue. We have some Macs, but mostly PCs. We use quite a few cloud services, including Microsoft hosted Exchange and SharePoint. A lot of people have IPhones, we support those for corp email (and pay for most of them too, yours included... Droid acceptable!). About the environment (people): Kind of a mixed bag here. Most of the people are nice, but most of them are middle aged, and not a whole lot of "fun" in the lets go to happy hour sort of way. Most of the people are competent, a few are very incompetent. You'll spend a bit of time explaining the same things to the same few people over and over, and have to do it with a smile. Benefits: The usual, not sure about 401k at the moment, but the health/dental is really good, I get about $0 taken out of my paycheck for my insurance. Vacation packages are very good as well. Vacation is a good place to negotiate since the salaries may be a little low. Salary: $35k to $45k depending on experience and your interview. Honesty: There's not a lot going on day to day. Most of the time we "look busy". You should also be able to find interesting things on the internet and send them to me (WoW, youtube, fun threads, etc). There is no where near enough work for 2 IT people, but without 2 people, I don't get to take vacations or days off. This is a cake job. So this will be quick since I just found out about a position still available. It is a technical support position dealing with secure communications and identification. The position was opened because our company won a contract to move one of our existing products to another client that has a unique configuration. You will have to understand basic networking, expert level log analysis and troubleshooting, acceptable sql skills and enough unix experience to get yourself around the Solaris environment. Who are we? SiteGoals. We're a small agency (8 people) and we mostly do client work for small to medium size businesses. Where are we? Austin, TX What are we looking for? A front end developer. Someone who knows enough HTML/CSS to handle Wordpress and ideally any experience with ExpressionEngine, PHP, HTML5, CSS3, and jQuery.
