I love documentaries, but I don't post enough of 'em in this thread because I have this misconception that they have to be epic, noteworthy ones; like, say, Working Man's Death, an epic film-festival worthy observational doc of what people across the world have to go through to engage in what is considered "work". But here's one that I simply enjoyed. Battle for Midway http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/battle_for_midway/ Veterans from both the US Navy and the Japanese Navy reunite on Midway, and relate their experiences of the battle together. This one struck an E Diminished with me because in my town, Charleston, SC, the successor to the original USS Yorktown (whose resting place is sought out and documented in the documentary) is now a musueam in its permanent resting place in the harbor. (edit: it appears that Dr. Robert Ballard, one of the leaders of the expedition that discovered the wreck of the Titanic, is the one who is looking for the Yorktown in this doc) http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...021136&t=h&z=16 The Battle of Midway was also noteworthy for being the beginning of the end of the giant Battleships as they were known up until that point. The battle took place between several naval task-forces, each several carriers strong, that were never actually within sight of each other; in fact, they were hundreds of miles apart. It was largely a battle of air power. --------- Anyway, speaking of the USS Yorktown, here's a WWII-era American propaganda/documentary that features (actually, I think takes place entirely on) the later USS Yorktown. By the way, If you're British and you don't recognize the Yorktown's namesake, its the site of one of the earliest battles of the American Revolution in which we beat you guys (yes, even without the help of the French just yet). This won an Oscar for "Best Documentary" in 1945. Anyway, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WixCu061ZEM whose tuggin fucked around with this message at 18:09 on Sep 15, 2011 |

This is a series of BBC documentaries looking into the culture and lifestyle of members of the British Army some of which dating back to the sixties all the way to the nineties. Non British Isles goons may have due the usual region lock dodging but these are excellent to see.

Also I got a date with a chunky monkey (don't tease I like 'em) who is also absolutely crazy for documentaries. We plan on watching Dear Zachary together next weekend, but I was wondering if anyone perhaps had a good "date documentary"? Maybe even something just light hearted. She's into literature, music, and certain aspects of true crime (The West Memphis 3 is how we started talking!). It doesn't have to fit into any of those interests at all though, as long as it would work well for a date.

After that you can watch The Bridge and see people kill themselves. Round out the night with Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, good conversation starter. I am sure some others will post some more suitable for dates but I can't think of any right now.

I'd go with something a little more fun and quirky like The Parking Lot Movie, Man on Wire, etc. A good one for a later date would be Inside Deep Throat--it will set the mood and is pretty interesting (be aware it's x-rated, there's definitely some porno scenes in it).

Heh, it wouldn't be our first date, but I see where you guys are getting at. I definitely won't use it as a "mood setting" movie, perhaps our first movie if we watch multiples (end on a nice one), or I'll just save it. I did talk to her about how powerful it was and she mentioned her interest in it. Thank you for the suggestions, I think the Parking Lot Movie will be my pick although I won't cut Man on Wire out. Very much appreciated, I will take this advice. I didn't take 500 Days Of Summer's advice when it told me it was not a love story, and I didn't get laid that night! I don' think Inside Deepthroat would fly...and I've already seen it. Much appreciated, I'm seeing her for dinner tonight and watching the documentaries this week, I'll tell you how for each one gets me. Nice to find a girl who loves documentaries. Somone posted a two part documentary from BBC called everything and nothing a few pages back. They were posted on youtube and the first part, "Everything", worked, but no links to the second part, "Nothing", seemed to work due to copyright claims from the BBC. They seemed to be really well made, and I'd really like to see the whole thing, since space stuff really fascinates me. Any chance anyone has a working link to the second part, "Nothing"?

I tend to take a "compassionate" stance when watching documentaries about people with odd behavior and all that, and I try to go beyond the whole "ew get help lol" response. If there's weirdness or evil in the hearts of some folks, it got there somehow, and it's worth it to take a step back and ask what circumstances may have put this person in the situation they're in now, instead of just writing them off as gross weirdos. I mean, with these two car fuckers, what was their childhood like? Do kids just grow up and one day get a boner for a car, or did something happen? Could it have been helped in the past, can they be helped now? Sometimes, I just can't get to that even-handed stance, like with Louis Theroux's tour of a post-prison facility exclusively for pedophiles. Those guys are sick and I hope they never make it outside those walls, and I honestly don't think they can ever be helped. But that's a pretty extreme set of people. The old dude in the car loving documentary really made me queasy. Not as much as the pedos. But not far from them either. doctorfrog fucked around with this message at 23:28 on Sep 19, 2011 |

Since I am in the social sciences, I get so jealous of mathematicians and those in the hard sciences and, this is probably weird and nerdy, but I like math(s) documentaries to relax. I don't think they can help what they are attracted to. In that Louis Theroux doc I thought it was incredibly dumb the "treatment" focused on changing what they are attracted to. How could you do that? It might just teach them to be deceitful enough to pass. I would have thought they would teach them how to not act on their urges, and understand the moral wrongness. Hey man, I asked this before maybe you'll know though. How do the pedo's go to that center? Like they say they've served their prison sentences, so why don't they go free? Did they just build that center and say "oh yeah, by the way after your sentence you go here?", doesn't seem like they could get away with that. I thought it was an alternative to prison but the people there had already been locked up. That said I think a few of the people were suitable for release.

It might just teach them to be deceitful enough to pass. I would have thought they would teach them how to not act on their urges, and understand the moral wrongness. I'd liken the old guy to the homeless people who sometimes expose themselves in trains and such. Less of a monster, more of a dirty old man. So, my initial reaction to him is basically one of disgust, followed by a more clinical curiosity of how such behavior develops (which the docu doesn't even try to explore). But when it became clear that he was enjoying the idea of being filmed and became increasingly bold in his exposition, I think that's when the warning bells became too loud to ignore. If I were a brain doctor or therapist in charge of this man's treatment, I'd put forth a little more effort to maintain even-handedness, but in the end it was just too much for me. I'm not entirely sure he sticks to his rural shack or if he leaves little deposits near SUV's every time he mails a letter. So, not as bad as the pedos, but some of the same skin-crawling reaction. As for the pedos, I don't recall that the show went in-depth as to what legal patchwork was in place to keep these men imprisoned after their sentences. So I don't know. And I might be a hypocritical in saying this, but I don't really need to know in their cases, even if a few of the guys there appear to be reformed.

It was made by CBC which is our public broadcaster, so it must be legit to host their content right? My taxes pay for them documentaries consarnit!
