1/10th the hours of which western counterpart? The F35?

The Flanker's AL-31 engine has a relatively minor overhaul at about 150 hours, with an overall lifespan of 1500 hours before being shipped back to get a full overhaul. China and India have both had issues with their AL-31s failing early, however.

PW F100-229 engines have a similar plan, except they're at 200-400 (depending on the aircraft type) and 3000, respectively. The newer F100 engines last about 40% longer.

My initial statement was a bit of hyperbole.

The only Tomcats still flying are in Iranian colors. No more USN Tomcats, no more Fighter Fling videos, which is why the 2004 video is so long and is basically a tribute to the Tomcat...that was the last Fighter Fling, since the first retirements happened that year, with the Tomcat being completely out of service two years later.

I still laugh my rear end off in the 2004 video with the "First Tomcat Flight," "First Hydraulic Failure," and "First Ejection."

I warned you! (the reviewer was me). The problem is, you basically can't believe anything you read in the book, because who knows what else is made up bullshit that she fell for. It poisons the entire well. The Oxcart pilots who've been going to book signing events with her have basically had to tell people half the book is made up.

It's strange, but I don't have that "poisoning the well" problem. It's always clear to me when the author is off in Dreamland and when the author is reporting the facts.

Recommending that C-130s be stuffed full of big guns and sent to orbit battlefields is the best idea :colbert:

You just aren't thinking big enough! 1 center mounted 16 inch cannon! Dive and fire! Just need a few howitzers on each side, some point defense guns on the side, top, bottom, with another howitzer and PD guns in the rear!

There was a WWII Soviet bomber that they put a crapload of submachine guns in the bomb bay pointing down for strafing runs. We should do that with a B-52 and miniguns.

NYPD Comissioner told the news that the NYPD already possessed the means to take down aircraft independently of any federal government assistance.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/09/25/60minutes/main20111059_page2.shtml?tag=contentMain;contentBody

quote:

Kelly: Well, it's something that's on our radar screen. I mean in an extreme situation, you would have some means to take down a plane.

Pelley: Do you mean to say that the NYPD has the means to take down an aircraft?

Kelly: Yes, I prefer not to get into the details but obviously this would be in a very extreme situation.

Pelley: You have the equipment and the training.

Kelly: Yes.

Later he claims he meant .50 cals on helicopters, but I desperately want to believe that the NYPD has a S-300 battery under a tarp somewhere in Central Park.
