If you're like me and didn't preorder the game, it looks like Target is gonna have it available with a free $10 giftcard. Non-CE I'm sure, but I'm not into that kind of thing anyway.

At this point, all you're really missing is the art book. The soundtrack is already all over YouTube and mini-strategy guide is already outdated thanks to the FuturePress guide. The Making-of videos will likely find their way on YouTube as well. Also, thanks to everyone reminding me how great they are I'm going to add the Bartholomew trailer and Squint's LP to the OP. Seems like things I should've done from the get-go, but I reiterate: I am a silly, stupid individual.

Is the artbook a full fledged book or is it some small 30 page thing with a few sketches, cg renders, and screenshots?

So...is heavy armor actually viable in Dark Souls, instead of a trap that totally gimps you, or is fast rolling still far superior?

Pornographic Memory posted:So...is heavy armor actually viable in Dark Souls, instead of a trap that totally gimps you, or is fast rolling still far superior? edit: also the general idea that if you are getting hit over and over again to the point where heavy armor is making a big difference, it probably means that you are doing something fundamentally wrong and need to improve.

However, I'm still going with light myself, especially since, like in Demon's, the black leather armor gives you all kinds of status effect resistances. I have heard that rolling in Dark Souls isn't as effective as it was in Demon's- not as many invincibility frames, and you need to be practically naked to get the fastest roll. Is that your experience so far? I get the impression they improved heavy armor, and nerfed the roll a bit to balance things out.

It might've just been the area the streamer was in, but he was severely hampered with no place to roll - either in close quarters or up on catwalks with no where to go.

While entirely true for Demons Souls, I haven't yet found many places here where I've needed much more than a hard shield and heavy armor aside my spear. But my god, you still need good timing. I still love my thiefy armor though! And I tend to swap styles when I get bored, the only thing I haven't really tried yet is main-spell casting, but that'll have to be a different character! dexplosivo posted:I've seen some of that in the fighting environments as well. Tighter quarters for many encounters, so you can't just blindly roll/counter spam some of the bosses/enemies. I seemed that everyone was a tumbling machine in Demons Souls, not so much anymore. And with my 20ish Endurance I have to be naked with a shield just aboutto get the fastest roll, but that roll is wicked quick compared to the Demons Souls one. some guy on a stream was decked out in an extremely heavy armor and was going toe-to-toe with a boss and was almost outpacing it in sheer damage, even though he was going straight health/dex. i wouldn't worry about heavy armor in this game if you properly spec for it i fully plan on making the tankiest build i can, so you roll masters can expect to hear some news. However once you get +20 dexterity you do a new roll animation that has almost no recovery time. I'm rolling a warrior. They start with 13 strength and dexterity. That way it won't be too hard to hit 20 strength and dexterity for me. I'm going to focus on strength however because I plan to make a two handed sword speed character. Strength increases swing speed so that's going to be my main stat besides vitality and endurance. Nelson Mandingo fucked around with this message at 23:06 on Sep 28, 2011 |

well looking viable and the actuality of playing the build are two different things. that said I'm willing to experiment because honestly, tanking blows and doing more damage is fun as hell, even if it ain't top tier!

Holy gently caress, what a GLORIOUS birthday present. Had no idea the date was so close, I remembered it being much further into October. Birthday is Saturday, will have Dark Souls on Tuesday. Is getting the platinum in this one as much of a grindfest as Demon's Souls was?

Goddamit, I can't decide what kind of class I'm going to play. I need everyone's input here to come to some sort of consensus. One thing's for sure, I'm starting as deprived with the locket because I am doing this right.

I'm not wondering what the optimal min-max class is because that's completely the wrong way to play (eg: Ilkar's mirden hammer faith build). I'm just wondering what everyone else is doing. gently caress, chances are I'll probably play all different permutations of dexxer, str-build, magic-rape because in DeS, all of these we're fun for different reasons. I'm just at a personal impasse of how to spec myself initially.

Everyone's still kinda down on heavy armor, but from what I've seen from the streams there are dudes rolling around pretty drat fast in heavy armor for some reason and damage mitigation from heavy armor is quite significant this time around. I still don't know which armor is better in the long run, but from what I've seen dodge speed becomes moot in the long run. Maybe the popular thing will be light armor early, heavy armor later?

My plan is to level up vitality and endurance only for a good long while, then start putting points into whatever stat goes with the sword/axe/halberd/whatever that I think looks the coolest and enjoy using the most. Then I'm going to hit things with it.

In this playthrough I am keeping str and dex mostly the same, so I can make use of the largest number of (non-magical) weapons and see how they all behave. My next time through I will choose one or the other to specialize in I assume.

The starting classes look considerably fancier now, assuming that the art in the wiki is similar to what they'll be wearing in the game. I cannot decide between the Warrior, Knight, or Bandit. I'm usually more of a knightly dude, but man that bandit looks kickass.

Take a bit of a jack of all trades approach to be able to equip as much stuff as possible just to see how it plays, and then build a more minmaxed character the second time through. Looking back on my first demon's souls character is so funny, the drat green bar seemed so tiny after having not played him for so long compared to my later characters.

So I've never played Demon's Souls but I'm really looking forward to playing this. I have a question about the thief class though: How much of an advantage do you get from the Skeleton key? I usually play as thieves but I have a feeling that agile classes are better suited for experienced players in this series.

Speaking of thieves, what's the advantage of the Masterkey if all the chests are unlocked?
|
# ? Sep 29, 2011 00:23 |

Word is the masterkey is a one-use consumable that can open any door. So if you know what you're doing you could save a hell of a lot of time/get something awesome early or something. If not it could be totally worthless.

My Mistress returns on Oct. 4th. Like an obidient thrall, I await her lash against my backside. I am both terrified and excited. Seriously though... I have not been this excited for a game in years (decades, maybe). For the past few months since finishing Demon's Souls, I have longingly fingered the little divots on my computer desk that resulted in smashing my controller on it multiple times while playing that punishing and evil game. To this day there is a little piece that rattles inside the controller when I shake it.

When I heard about that, I assumed there'd be like one or maybe two doors in the world that don't actually have normal keys and can only be opened with a Master key. So you could either blow it for convenience's sake, or save it up for The Ultimate Secret somewhere down the line. But that's just wild speculation.

The question is, can it open doors that don't have keys, rather that are locked from the other side?
