The 15th Colossus, on hard mode, can eat a giant-sized dick and die. Motherfucker. He just doesn't stop shaking, and it takes forever to get back on the dude when you inevitably fall of him. And if you happen to fall underneath him, and he stomps on you? Instant death. I was trying to rush through hard mode so I haven't been grabbing fruits or lizards, but still. Instant death. gently caress right the hell off.

I don't mean to knock the game so much, I was just shocked out how much I didn't enjoy it. I'd heard how amazing it is for the past six years, got it without any trepidation, and was surprised how many flaws it has. Looking past the gameplay problems, I'll agree that it is an absolutely beautiful game.

I had a lot of problems remembering how to play the game at first, but the controls finally clicked in place and I don't have much issue now. Obviously if you're 8 in and still not digging it, then the game isn't for you. The important thing to remember about the camera (at least when fighting a colossus) is to not actually try to control it, or move it as little as possible. It'll take some wild swings when the dudes start shaking you off, and it's best not to even fight it.

I had no problems with the PS3 version whatsoever. It's not a fast and frenetic shoot-em-up if you're playing it even vaguely stealthily, so rapid fine-tune aiming isn't that necessary.

Here's hoping Amazon or someone matches that price before long.

If that's the case then I guess maybe I feel like the game has just been eclipsed by newer games. Red Dead Redemption did huge environment just as well in my opinion, if not better (obviously making the comparison because of the horse,) and God of War 3's titan boss fight was just as massive as the collosi.

I wasn't a big fan of Red Dead Redemption due to the GTA mission system, but that's probably more on me, and I haven't played GoW3 so I don't know how that fight feels. I just really enjoy SotC's simple layout of just being boss fights with some traveling in between.

I'll probably pick up the HD collection since all this talk is making me want to play it again but my old PS2 copy is nowhere to be found, so I guess I'll see if the controls stick out to me when I play it again.

I recently set up my PS2 and played SotC and it didn't feel strange at all to me, even though I hadn't played it in a few years. The game looked really nice in 480p, can't wait to check it out in full HD tomorrow.

The only real criticism I had about the game was that there was no music during the traveling bits. I get that it helps with the sense of isolation and all but with a soundtrack that gorgeous it was drat near criminal not to play bits from it while you ride around.

Thinking about it more, I think SotC got a lot of praise when it came out (and since) simply because it's so unique. At the time, there weren't any other games with boss fights on the same scale. Games have done it since, but all of them have badass main characters. Of course Kratos can kill a four story monster, he's motherfucking Kratos. In SotC, all you have is a sword, bow, and a horse. It's one of those rare games thats able to capture people's imagination.

It helped that the graphics were mind blowing as well.

Only a month left or so until Metal Gear Solid's HD Collection. In fact, I really wish the just remove the millions and millions of stupid vehicle fights from the endgame of Peace Walker. At least if they can give the same camera and aim setup as Peace Walker for Snake Eater, I can finally beat that game once and for all.

But really, all I want is people to play Peace Walker with me and just "naked" run every mission using the slingshot.

All the normal bosses were pretty easy, but yeah, the post game ones will murder the gently caress out of you if you aren't doing multiplayer and even then they take a really long time to kill. Its really ridiculous.

I'm really enjoying Ico so far, considering I missed it the first time around. However, there seems to be a shitload of 'ghosting', especially when I'm moving the camera around. Is this normal, and/or is there something I can do about it? I never get motion sickness but this starts to get to me after a while. Does SotC have this problem too?

It's both thrilling and terrifying.
For those having issues with SotC controls, I had to set both horizontal and vertical controls to inverted to have it feel normal to me (this was odd as I never play any other game with inverted controls).

Also you can get on your horse more easily by jumping towards it and then using R1 to grab.

Even with these tips, the controls/camera still suck rear end, but hopefully this helps a bit. No way I'm going to replay the game like 4 times to get Platinum though.

Yeah, I just wrapped up hard mode and the thought of having to kill another 32 Colossi to get plat is a bit daunting. Especially considering there are several time trials I'll have to do several times (like 15, seriously gently caress that guy). I don't think I got around to doing that in the original, either.

Also, there's a point right at the end of the game that has the worst controls by far. It's like playing through someone else's hands, or something. Terrible.

Can you explain exactly how riding my horse is supposed to work? Sometimes he keeps speed other times when I let off the X button he slows down.

The horse controls are not quirks; they are unique, but very poor design.

I never really had any trouble with the controls in SotC at all. The horse controls like a horse, not vehicle. He doesn't like to do things that will hurt it. You can't just force the horse to do things. He is your partner in the game, not a tool. I can see why people would have trouble with this but once you except it, it makes alot of sense.

Really all the controls in the game feel very deliberate. I also never really had trouble with the camera. It tends to show you what to need, and when it doesn't the button that shows the colossus does the job, because really that's all you really need to be focusing on.

In general the people's problems with SotC's control's have always been a mystery yo me. I never had any complaints.

Horse controls are easy. Press and hold X and Agro will start with a trot, then go to a full gallop. He'll stay that way unless you let go of X or he runs into something. The thing to remember when steering is that Agro will basically control himself. Try it out on the land bridge to the northeast of the temple. Get Agro to a full gallop and he'll automatically turn at the right times.

It can be a pain in the rear end going through trees, though. Sometimes the horse will do alright by himself, other times not so much.

When the game came out, the game received the same exact criticisms. I do remember having a lot of trouble with the camera constantly wanting to be stuck somewhere halfway up the Colossi's rear end when I was playing it.

I played SotC in 2008. The only trouble I remember having controls wise was during the sand snake fight, basically just due to the combination of things that you had to be aware of/do. I understand why people would be annoyed by just how much the colossi shake, but that seemed like a pretty essential part of the experience, since they weren't doing too much else to get you off of them generally.

One thing that games hardly ever simulate is the fact that a horse is an animal and not just a car with legs, and has a certain amount of smarts about where to go and what to do (I don't know how much, I have only ridden a horse once in my life, horse people tell me it is that way though). I guess RDR did a little bit of that with your horse sticking to the path and maintaining the right following distance and stuff by itself, but I would like to see that apply to other games.

Sudden Loud Noise

I think Red Dead's horse controls are an evolution of SotC's. It's not simple driving a car, but it's also not completely unintuitive and maddening.

I can't help but disagree here. Yes, it's an amazing game, but it's not perfect. Going back to aiming with the left stick threw me for a loop, and we all know the right way to aim in video games is with the right stick. Leon's Parkinson's aiming was a little too much. I don't remember it being that bad. The game doesn't have Move support, when it really should. If not because there aren't enough Move games worth playing out there, then because they've done motion controller support before.

As for RE5, I don't think they hosed it up. What makes you say that?

Really? I really loved the single-player campaigns of the Uncharted games but this beta doesn't seem much different than UC2's MP, which basically sucked. Maybe I just stunk at it or something but it mostly feels like a bunch of idiots sprinting around until they find someone and then the better load-out wins - or people do a ridiculously poorly controlled dance around each other and throw grenades at impossible angles and swing wildly with the melee attack which doesn't kill anyone until a full second after it connects.

I like that the jumping and climbing elements are intact from SP but I think the introduction of these power plays is basically an admittance that the multiplayer is an unbalanced goofy mess.

I think one of the reasons why RE5 gets flack is because of the co-op.It felt a bit forced. The levels were a bit so/so really. Not as crazy as RE4. Also Sheva is probably the most boring character in the RE universe ever. While it is possible to play without co-op, it would've been better if they never made Sheva. Sheva is awesome just for the fact that its a black female protagonist, which seems to be a rarity in video games.
