What does 1password do that lastpass doesn't do?

modig posted:What does 1password do that lastpass doesn't do? It's not a service, for one, and your data isn't stored in THE CLOUD unless you use Dropbox sync (like I do). I think the browser integration may be better with 1Password but I've never used Lasspass so that could be wrong. Also, and this is more theoretical than most people might care about, but with SSL's trust model getting completely owned lately I feel a lot safer using something that doesn't rely on it so heavily.

LastPass has an iOS app but the last time I used it, it was pretty awful. 1Password's iPhone and iPad apps are great.

Two quick questions: 1) Can I stop Finder from automatically opening with "All My Files?" Kind of awkward trying to show my Mom something and BAM pornography. Luckily I did a ninja click. 2) Can I change it so that when I shut down or restart the box for "restore windows next time..." is unchecked? Whenever I had it checked the next time I would login the desktop would freeze.

I have questions about how applications are launched. As I posted in the firefox thread, firefox has problems unless I launch it by running this in the terminal: /Applications/Internet/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin If I do it that way, it works fine. If I run it via clicking on the .app, it doesn't connect to sites at all. Anyway, I'm wanting to know what actually happens when you click on the .app, what is it within the package that gets run, what determines what file it is that gets run, and if I could somehow change it so that the above file is the one that gets run when I run the .app.

Anjow posted:I have questions about how applications are launched. Have you tried creating a new profile by running /Applications/Internet/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin --profilemanager And then launching from the doc/Applications menu? There are 2 executable files in the /Firefox.app/MacOS/ folder, firefox and firefox-bin According to the info.plist firefox is the one that opens when you double click the app <key>CFBundleExecutable</key> <string>firefox</string> Do you get the same problem as launching from the dock if you try to run 'firefox' instead of 'firefox-bin'? It may be a helper that simply loads a few things and then launches firefox-bin.

Until recently I had thought it was a profile issue, so yeah I've tried that and through various combinations of tests ruled it out. In fact running the profile manager from the terminal was how I eventually found out it was the launch method that made the difference. Anyway, I've tried doing: /Applications/Internet/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox In the terminal, and that DOES exhibit the problem. I have also tried changing info.plist to use firefox-bin but that unfortunately doesn't seem to fix it.

What is the actual error you get when you say it won't connect to sites? You don't have something weird like a proxy setting on or something do you? What version of Firefox?

No error is given, it appears as if no effort is made. The window just stays blank. It occurs with an entirely new profile (no addons, settings, anything), no proxy. It happened first when I updated to 7.0.1 but when I changed to 8.0.1 beta it still happened and when I changed back to 7 it still happened. It still happens after an entirely clean install using CleanApp to remove every trace of the old one. I have no idea how this works.

Does CleanApp actually delete the /Users/Anjow/Library/Application Support/Firefox folder ? It seems like an extension or plugin is behind this. Do you get any console log messages related to Firefox when you load firefox-bin? (go up to spotlight and type in 'console')

I was probably the last person I'd every thought would switch to a Mac. I've been a windows developer since 1994. In my current company I'm in a leadership position and half of the company uses Macs (designer, UX people) so when it came time for me to get a machine I abused my authority a little and got a loaded MacBook Pro. This is the most amazing machine I've ever owned. OSX Lion was a great place for me to jump into Mac as I had no problems getting used to the gestures. I use the newest Parallels to run windows which is amazing since I can have a Visual Studio window floating around along side my Mac windows. I think Lion is more productive for business than 7, and Windows 8 looks like a UI nightmare.

Bob Morales posted:Remove that extension? Do you get that error on a clean install (is it installed by default?)? It is not installed by default, but removing it does not solve my problem unfortunately (just tried). Likewise, it works fine if I: Create a test user account in the OS. Copy across the profile from my main one, run firefox. Then I can browse sites as normal using the addons I always have. However exactly the same profile does not work on my main user account.

Does anyone use Papers2? I'm using the trial and I'm trying to move my library over to my home folder (~/Papers/[Papers2]) but I can't seem to do it. Their FAQ says to quit Papers2 and mv the folder, then start it again and it should tell me to locate my new folder, except all it does is create a brand new folder in the old ~/Library folder. It also won't let me change it in the preferences.

(Kind of unintuitive. One would assume that it would just create the library files for you when you choose a folder where they don't exist.) Anyway, I really like the simpleness of the default folder icons in the home folder (you know, the default Movies/Music/Pictures/etc) icons). Are there any more out there, fan created even, that look identical in style?
