What are everyone's experiences with shotguns? How do they compare with other weapon categories at end game? How do you deal with high DT targets? The stats on the wiki look a little underwhelming, but maybe I'm missing something here.

the Shotgun Surgeon perk helps tremendously with high-DT enemies, but yeah you probably want to be carrying a second gun to deal with hard/long range targets anyway. I kept a Combat Shotgun with magnum shells in my inventory until the very end.

With the And Stay Back perk the riot shotgun is the best weapon in the game. You can literally keep five deathclaws in a twitching pile on the ground at once with it. I cleared out dead wind cavern on very hard at level 10 with it. It's awesome, and one of the reasons why I favor guns over energy weapons.

Does moving it to a SSD reduce the amount of crashing? Since it crashes mostly on transitions or fast traveling, I'm guessing it may have I/O issues with standard hard drives. I would love to get a SSD, but they're so expensive.

I don't think the engine properly understands what it's on; it didn't crash for me on the old computer or the new one when it was on the HDD, and it doesn't crash on my SSD either. But it sure loads a lot quicker. And, yeah, SSD storage is still really expensive and deciding to give one 128GB drive or more to games of all things is a hell of a luxury decision, but I got really good deals on them. Games that benefit from SSDs include:
  • All games when loading (relies on having a fast computer in general though, or else you'll be stuck on decompressing textures etc.)
  • Any game which relies on making predictions when loading content - this one is a killer on older games like The Witcher 1, where that games rather poorly optimized and single threaded engine could cause stuttering for a sec even on modern hardware when, say, you're turning down a street it didn't think you were going to go down results in being momentarily I/O bound as it corrects what's in memory with what you actually need. Console ports tend to have this issue since they're built around having a relatively very small amount of RAM to work with.
  • Any game that is designed kind of poo poo and has inherent I/O limitations because of how content is loaded. Gamebryo ahoy! Asheron's Call had an infinite world and never had this crap, and we were using IDE 100 drives if we were lucky... Just saying.
  • Any game where a lot of content is loaded dynamically (e.g. massively multiplayer games of any sort)

Not a very good use of a couple hundred bucks compared to getting your OS and main applications on a 128GB SSD (which is a :tviv: experience in computing comparable to the first more-than-1-core processor computer you had), but if you can swing it, it is a nice addition to the SSD "experience." An unexpected but really pleasant benefit is that in games that aren't crash-prone alt+tab is instantaneous in and out when using a game on an SSD and having a sizeable amount of RAM and your OS on an SSD. Mixed productivity and play computers rejoice.

Gamebryo seems to benefit because it's pretty crap, though, for what it's worth. The cell by cell thing, ugh.

Shotgun Surgeon perk with high-damage slugs (plus And Stay Back to make things easier). Not quite as good as the best armor-piercing options, but they definitely hold up pretty well.

I uncovered the Omerta plot and went and had a meeting with Big Sal and Nero. I have to say I was very pleased with how the game handled the situation I found myself in.

I absolutely did NOT want Cachino in charge afterwards, but he was classed as an ally. Happily I convinced Big Sal that Nero was double crossing him, Nero blew Big Sal away, I put two into Nero's head, turned and blew Cachino's head off as he cowered in the corner, then turned back and blasted Nero in the heart to put him down.

When the smoke cleared I kinda expected the whole casino to go hostile because of Cachino dying but they just kept on keeping on. After Joana told me about the stuff he did, I really didn't want to leave him in charge, and he seemed a little TOO enthusiastic about being the new Boss. I guess everyone just thinks that he died during the fallout between Sal or Nero.

Yep, I had actually forgotten that it was even a thing that Yes-Man was interested in but I got the quest complete/tick-boxes. I think it's because he died BEFORE Nero, so it classed him as dying in the battle. If I'd done it afterwards, I suspect it would have hosed things up, but I got my timing right on it.

I saw the something funny today. My son was killing scorpions with my level 50 character near the racetrack north of Nipton, and he saw somebody running in the distance through the blowing sand. He zoomed in, and it was a Powder Ganger being chased by a giant radscorpion. He killed the scorpion with Red Glare to try and save the guy, but he died in the splash damage. Went over to see who it was, and it was that guy who got the winning lottery ticket. The funny thing is this is over 4 months in game time and 70 hours of real-life time since I first met that guy. I wonder how long that scorpion was chasing him.

Have you used Pew Pew? It's pretty much the best energy pistol, short of the Alien Blaster, of course. The double-fire and ammo usage seems excessive at first, but the difference in damage output is totally worth it for an energy weapon user. Also, if you don't use energy weapons, disregard.

Ah right, I guess that must be the reason anyone would ever do it then. I don't use energy weapons so I didn't know the one you found next to that body was any good, I just completely disregard all energy weapons. Yeah, despite my character specializing in Energy Weapons, I carry about eight pieces of guns, and most of my quickslots are guns. I carry only three energy weapons (YCS186, who happens to be the only Gauss rifle I've found and is used against deathclaws, a laser rifle and plasma defender). Guns are more funny for sure, there's more variety to them, and I think they carry more punch in general. There are enemies which I can't fight efficiently without guns, i.e. cazadores (SMGs with HP ammo are best when close).

And certain bugs make energy weapons worse. The ash/goo piles seem to never disappear from my game, and I've been playing for 3 or so in-game years. It's crazy, when you kill and enemy with a gun, hundreds of meters from your position, and loot it thanks to a goo pile next to you. The goo pile from a previous incarnation of the enemy. It's stupid when you have five such goo piles...

Also, energy weapons have their specific bugs. Like area effect of Gauss rifle in VATS, or a gimping mod for a laser rifle. And, as a true rat pack, I've found that energy ammo for three weapons weights much more than ammo for my assorted packs of guns! If I'm overloaded, I just fire a couple of bad guys with my laser. I feel so lighter then.

Yeah, no kidding, I'm not trying to draw a strong comparison there, just putting a face on it. :) Gamebryo is a flawed engine, I don't think any of us disagree with that premise! Just wanted to report some interesting success I had, not only migrating a full installation (twice!) but the remarkable improvement moving the game to an SSD.

There are utilities that let you run specific Steam games on a different directory; this would be most useful for people who already have their OS on an SSD. Definitely not suggesting going out to buy an SSD for Fallout NV is a good idea, but if you already have one, the installation is not huge, and the change in performance is dramatic.

I don't like the looks of energy weapons, almost all of them look like something from Serious Sam rejected idea board (not necessarily a bad thing). Actually, the abundance of energy weapons somewhat bugs me. I always felt like those were relics of the old world and only BoS, Enclave or other tech hungry power groups had the means of using and keeping them working. Having couple of junkies shooting at me with tri-beam laser rifles and plasma pistols feels a little out of place.

As already stated, the guns in this game is too awesome to pass in favor of toy guns. I have Lucky (unique .357), modded Cowboy Repeater and a bowie knife for my cowboy (that is expert on hacking computers and opening locks). I can't buy the GRA uniques yet because the mods i installed makes sure that i am always low on caps and traders charge way higher than normal (the unique cowboy repeater is 45000 caps).

On the other hand i got to like explosives even more (due to lack of ammo and increased difficulty), poor Motor Runner had no chance with a live plasma grenade in his pockets :ohdear:.

I also prefer Energy Weapons, after playing Fallout 3 (where it was possible to write "LOLs" and "OMGs" on billboards with gatling laser, until they patched it somehow), but:
1. Can't find these more absurd weapons in FNV. I am going to play only one time, thus was refraining from going to the strip, and with level 25 I've never seen plasma caster, tesla cannon or gatling laser. In F3 it was easy to take gatling lasers from BoS boys, but there's not much of them in FNV.
2. I think it is hard to continuously repair them, because better ammunition wears energy weapons really fast.
3. The ammo is heavy as hell. In hardcore your damage:ammo weight ratio is terrible.
4. More potent weapons, starting with plasma, use at least two rounds of ammo (up to five) per shot, thus relying on recycling is not viable.

So I would certainly feel like a mad scientist, but a short lived one. Because after the initial showdown (look at mighty me, your puny troglodytes) either the weapon would break, or the ammo would be exhausted.

Good thing though, that Flamers/Incinerators are counted as Energy Weapons. It is still possible to play mad burner with specialization in EW.
