I've hit a bit of a brick wall and I thought some of you guys might be able to help. I've been trying to get in contact with Daft Punk's manager/management company to clear the rights to a video that was made a while back for various reasons; I'm a college student, I don't really have many resources at my disposal. I know that they are currently with Sony - and I tried going through the motions with them in London but the system they have in place is designed for individual songs and they never pick up the drat phone at their licensing office. The video uses a medley of songs as well, making clearing the rights the normal way nearly impossible. I'm working with a lawyer who's helping us pro bono, and we had a lead for a little while on a Trevor Biset but he turned out to be a publicist - which meant we've just wasted a great deal of time. I'm at my complete wits end. If anyone has ANY idea who Daft Punk's manager is and how to get in touch with someone who could clear up the sync, recording and upload rights to a video with an arranged medley of their music in it I would be very, very grateful. I've been to the office at the local collecting agency and they said we need these expressly before we can do anything with the video.

Much of electronic music incorporates some form of sampling. The majority of hip hop subgenres, tons of house and drum and bass and techno subgenres... jazz and rock musicians 'vamp' all the time. Even "alternative rock band" coldplay took the entire melody of kraftwerk's "computer love" for a song. Sampling is the spice of musical life.

I don't like this "electro swing" business either but people seriously eat that poo poo up on the dance floor. It serves its purpose well, DJ-wise.

I don't know man I think it's super cheesy and if I heard this on the dance floor I'd probably be very confused. I dont mind a decent electro set but I hate it when a DJ decides he wants to start doing mashups or experimenting. Just play some basslines goddamnit

Maybe I can get this question answered here. I am looking for a NYC electronic/house club. I believe it is a "members" only type of thing, where you have to provide them with your email for invites. I think the name of it is something along the lines of "Black Maret" or something, I may be reallly off. Thanks!

TheModernAmerican posted:I know that but it seems that the sample really dictates a whole song in this genre. Once a DJ finds a track they build around that. Reversing the process might work out. Did you bother observing some of Caravan Palace's live shows? On many occasions in their songs, they create the scat/lyrics themselves and play it back/sing it in a way evocative of sampling. like so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dm6DzM7rNE Regardless, some samples dictate a whole song in a bunch of genres. Take almost any DJ Premier instrumental, it will be variations on a 4-bar sample. Take any Daft Punk track off Discovery, it'll probably be built on one fundamental 70s funk/jazz fusion riff.

A new collaboration is coming up with Skrillex and the Doors. No joke. The remaining members of the Doors recorded a track with him for an upcoming documentary. There are some other interesting artist collaborations in there too, like the Crystal Method with an R&B singer and DJ Premier and Nas with an orchestra. Here's a news story with a video: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/remaining-doors-members-record-with-skrillex-for-new-documentary-20111006
