In my experience, lag spikes have been fixed in 1.9 but out of memory crashes have not. ...and because I know SOMEONE is going to ask, yes I have the correct version of Java installed.

Placing a cake on the ground will increase the probability of one teleporting into the chunk. Or, enchant your fishing rod and create a tool used to fish. For Endermen. I just encountered the greatest Enderman moment. The bastard removed a block of dirt from my farm, popping some sugar cane free. However, I was lucky enough to see this happen and watch him get hurt by the ensuing water and teleport away. I really do wish they'd build nerd poles or something though. At least fighting them is an adventure now.

I use a modified version of the fix in the OP but even then I'll still run out fairly often in a longer play session.

I really think the game could do with a couple extra tiers of material to make equipment with. As it stands you spend five seconds with wood gear, quickly progress to stone, iron isn't exactly scarce, diamond is rare but with a bit of intelligent mining you can usually find it easily enough. Once you've hoarded enough to make a full set of equipment and tools though what's left but to explore for the sake of exploring? Something between iron and diamond should probably be added. Maybe just steel or hardened iron(2 or so iron bars=one steel/hardened iron bar) or buff the regular iron armor, make it the product of this new hypothetical resource, and make regular iron bars give you chainmail. That way there's something to do with all the iron you can end up accumulating and save diamonds for tools exclusively if you haven't had much luck. After that, since you need diamond tools to even enter the nether, add a resource block that's only found there that's a step above diamond. Maybe just 9 netherack produces nether ore to be smelted into nether iron for nether tools and nether equipment!( ) And finally with the new dimension coming soon that supposedly requires some adventuring in the nether to repair the entry portals, throw in a final resource there that's a step above the nether material. I dont know, it'd be a lot of stuff to add that serves the same purpose as what we already have, but I feel like if there was something to stretch out the grind to the 'endgame' gear-wise it'd give people who like to feel like they're progressing something to work on.

If you have 32-bit Windows and 4 GB of RAM, you don't actually get all 4 GB of RAM, as part of the 32-bit memory limit is reserved for hardware like the graphics card. Anything above ~3GB and you should upgrade to 64-bit. Windows 7's CD keys work for both the 32 and 64-bit variety of whatever edition you have. If you have Vista you'd need to rebuy for 64-bit as 32-bit version and 64-bit version keys are different, even for the same edition, IIRC. If it's XP, just upgrade to 7, XP 64-bit is terrible and there's no reason to stick with XP.

(Botched potions etc.) I guarantee you any sewer I design in the game will be more interesting than the trillions of boring rear end sewers in virtually every video game. I play on a server as part of a walled city that is mostly designed by a dude who's big into architecture and builds these big fancy buildings. I built my own house and of course it looks like rear end on the outside, but I have the best furniture in town far as I'm concerned. I got pinball, bitches. Anyway one of the last rooms I did was a pretty decent bathroom with a snow-and-pressure-plate toilet and a tub. So of course I have been suggesting to him that we build a sewer system for the city. Totally has nothing at all to do with my TMNT skin. Hell, abandoned sewers would be another decent underground labyrinth thing for them to implement. And a good source of bricks!

Well to be fair before I started building much furniture I googled "minecraft furniture" for inspirations. I took some designs I saw and then put my own spin on them, and then ended up just making my own original poo poo from there. Here's a shitload of pictures. couch in the foreground, TV with levers for rabbit ears, and a stone brick slab to sort of approximate a game console. I think it looks remotely like an SNES. another TV with antennae outdoor seating area, with a netherrack firepit. this is my deck, it also has a furnace/stone barbecue and a storage box for cooked meat. sink using a level for the faucet, idea stolen from a site. snow toilet, sites have these but usually use trapdoors and water, i decided i wanted white more. fridge in my freezer room, chests are full of snowballs, snow blocks, and raw meat. fridge i saw on a youtube video i think, but i actually had the freezer room long before i did. pinball table. press the buttons and the tracks light up. this one was on one of those furniture sites but theirs was ugly as poo poo, i like mine a lot better kinda lovely arcade cabinet i need to try to improve. same painting on both sides to be like side art. there's a dark grey wool behind the glass hidden in the wall for effect, but it's weak. Wanted to make a casino, this was my idea for a roulette table another image of the prototype casino i was testing out in creative. in the back you can kind of see my slot machine, which has a lever that sets off a hidden note block (which you can barely hear, but hey i tried). the stone/sign thing on the left is supposed to be an air hockey table, the one with the posts behind it is a pool table, and the table with the track on it on the right is for blackjack. What setting can I muck with to cut down on the xray vision bug as seen here? Reinstalling optifine hd (multicore version) seemed to be ok for a a bit but then it started up again, and now instead of seeing the whole underworld it seems to just be large squares like shown in the picture. Water flickers in the same size as well. changing the fog distance fixes it for 10 seconds-few minutes.

I have to admit this is vaguely off-topic for the thread, but since the framing-issue is Minecraft, I hope I don't get yelled at for it: As I mentioned earlier, playing with a high-res pack (which is so purty I can't bring myself to go back) has been causing me a lot of out-of-memory issues. I'm on Windows XP, with 2g of memory (I'm a "upgrade only when I really need to" guy, which is why I haven't upgraded much), so it's not really surprising. Because Minecraft is the only situation so far I've had issues with, I'm a bit hesitant about spending a lot of cash on a Windows upgrade and memory, so I'd like to pick one: upgrade to more memory, or upgrade Windows? The fact that XP doesn't 'fully' use 4g leads me to think to upgrade to Win7, but just upgrading to Win7 won't help the memory issues in minecraft... or would it?

You put 'fully' in quotes but you really do have unusable RAM there. Reading a bit more fully, put a crowbar into your wallet and upgrade both. Windows 7 is really that much of an improvement.
