Isn't there some candy in the UK or something that has the exact some tagline "NOT FOR WOMEN!"

Haven't seen the commercial but maybe the marketing guys thought process is something like "Men are stupid and will buy anything that is portrayed as manly, women are stupid and will buy anything that is diet, they don't even need an ad."

If the Super Bowl is the place for the best commercials, then the MLB Postseason is the worst. I suppose that having some generic pop group singing a song a million times a game (I hope someone else gets the reference I'm making) is better than Dane Cook's shouting during the 2007 MLB Postseason, though.

Sadly they would not be the first diet soft drink to have this style of ad campaign. Pepsi Max a couple of years ago comes to mind.

The NCAA Basketball tournament also suffers from the same problem. A poo poo ton of commercial breaks, an extremely low number of ads and advertisers, and you want to put a brick through your TV after one round of games.

There are countless market studies out there that point to women as the main decision maker for household day-to-day spending, especially as regards food and beverages. There's a drat good reason advertising for so many things are aimed at women, they're the ones going out to buy the items.

I can sort of understand Pepsi Max aiming at men since I only seemed to see the ads during sporting events, but that was still a stretch. Coke Zero seemed to do the best of all of them and basically called the stuff a diet soda that didn't taste like diet.

Is it ok to post old commercials here? From the "It was a good idea at the time" Department, I present to you: Ayds Diet Candy. Ayds was a very popular product in the 70's and early 80's, promoted as a tasty weight-loss candy. It had quite a large market share in the "weight loss products" department.

That was before the discovery and classification of the AIDS disease in the early 80's. Suddenly, people didn't want AYDS anymore. The company stubbornly refused to change the name of the product even after their sales dropped by 85% and quickly went out of business.

Video quality isn't the greatest, but these are hilarious in retrospect.

While I won't argue the study or its affects on advertising, this only make me think of that AT&T Commercial where the wife freaks out because the husband went out and bought something. Who is that geared towards? Like, how does that make the product or service appealing to anyone?

Also, it makes me think of the Sears air conditioning commercial of yesteryear.

BUT MY LIVELIHOOD DEPENDS ON THE FORUMS!
I actually like most of this commercial. I think the whole "videogame characters celebrating the player who guides them to the end" theme is pretty neat and the film nerd in me likes the production values/set design:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdWkKKSckNk

....but when it gets to the part about the G.I.'s celebrating some PS3 player as the hero of D-Day, it just really manages to piss me off in ways that I guess probably shouldn't. I love the whole "flight-of-fancy/be part of something big" aspect of the commercial, but this bit strikes me as incredibly disrespectful to all of the real WWII veterans- and I'm sure it would've angered a lot of them if they were alive to see it.

"I was pinned down, on that godforsaken beach.....my friends were dying....and then MICHAEL broke through!"

gently caress off, people's actual grandfathers were traumatized for life on Omaha beach, and you want to celebrate some pudgy dude on his sofa? To be fair, I feel sort of the same way about the WWII-themed Medal of Honor games full-stop. I have a blast playing things based on fictional premises (like any other "military sim" game), but something about making a game out of real-life events (Now YOU can fight in the Battle of the Bulge, from the comfort of your home!) seems like it diminishes their importance or gravity somehow (Wolfenstein is awesome, and is obviously not in this category). If it weren't for the "too soon" aspect, I'm sure there'd be a "9/11 first responder" game out, and I'll cringe when it inevitably arrives. On a related note, the Halo 3 "museum" ads were great.

But on the subject of "pretentious"- and music in commercials (from a few pages back): I know a lot of people who become enraged when a song from a revered Indie band gets popped into a commercial (See: Grizzly Bear and the Generationals used in Reese's Cup ads/the New Pornographers in cruise ship and T-Mobile commercials/all Apple ads that goons loathe because :argh:HipsterSmugCoffeeshop:argh:/etc.) but I really don't get more than annoyed with the commercial if it's annoying. I have no problem with artists "selling out"- especially "indie" acts with comparatively small fanbases- in this era where 80%+ of the music that gets exchanged is pirated. I remember seeing an interview with a band that said their payout from one ad placement earned them more than the sales from their multiple albums combined. I was watching TV with a friend and heard him mutter something about "thinking they were better than that" when he saw the New Pornographers T-Mobile ad, but come on- they're actually getting paid for their work.

I would argue that pretentious is the precise word to describe most advertisements. After all, pretentiousness is simply the state of holding a pretense--of presuming an undeserved air of importance. Given this, what could possibly be more pretentious than trying to tell an audience that a stick of deodorant is the only thing that can make them attractive, or that a certain brand of fake mayonnaise should be the symbol of youth and vitality?

In regards to the Men's Only diet Dr. Pepper ad, I think it's due to the higher amount of men that are now drinking diet. For the longest time, diet commercials were only directed at women. But recently, say within the last few years, men have started drinking more diet. It makes sense for them to advertise directly to men to make them feel that drinking diet is not a womanly thing.
