Dismember announced today that the band has called it quits: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=164728 Pioneers and leaders of extreme metal in the 90s, they never really got back on track after Fred left the band a few years ago. They had a great run, but it's a shame that I never got to see them.

Last night went and saw Katatonia and Opeth. Even though Mikael isn't using his harsh vocals anymore, I liked the obscure stuff they played. Reminds me of the stuff I hear on Deep Tracks on XM/Sirius but heavier. And as always Mikael is hilarious.

I guess I'm a little late posting this but there is a new Ne Obliviscaris song up (http://neobliviscaris.bandcamp.com/track/and-plague-flowers-the-kaleidoscope) And it is in fact amazing. I more than anyone expected this to be a cluttered piece of poo poo that they kind of lucked out with the demo. Hearing them live also sounded like a total cluster gently caress. This recording is great though. The harsh vocals wreck it a fair amount for me - distant vocals say more than grim growls do. Check it out.

Dismember is one of my favourite bands but it is probably no big loss that they're splitting up. Their later albums weren't really anything special, the biggest loss is that they won't be touring anymore.

Dismember was one of three bands that got me into death metal with Death is only the Beginning 2 compilation nuclear blast used to put out. At least I got to see them live once with Grave opening. One of the best shows ever. gently caress. But I guess I should get used to this kind of news since all of the greats aren't getting any younger...

I think Nicko's still got a few years left in him judging from the energy he seems to have whenever I've seen them live or in clips in the last few years. They all seem to take pretty decent care of themselves in that band.

Shane Embury was in the band before I was born ('88), they were touring out of an old van when Tomas Lindberg handed them an At The Gates demo, ATG became legends and broke up 15 years ago, and every metalhead knows who both bands are. Napalm Death didn't split up, they haven't gone three years without making an album since the 80s, and these guys are in their 40s playing lower support slots on the other side of the world, living out of a van. They have two decades of doing what is often too much for guys half their age, it's unbelievable. Barney is a really smart guy too, despite being English he was quite well-versed in American politics and spent quite some time talking to and 18 year old me about various subjects while bands above them played and nobody else even recognized him. Five years and many shows later that has set in and it still doesn't click in my mind with anything other than insane dedication to music. I've been almost hopelessly out of touch with metal for the last 5 years for many reasons. Mostly because modern metal is not my thing. I used to stay current by posting on metal-oriented message boards, but the boards I used to frequent have either closed down or are now more about internet friendships than music (relapse records forum). Can anyone recommend a metal forum with people that aren't a bunch of narrow-minded idiots (maybe even with a sense of humor)?

Living out of a van probably sucks no matter how used to it you are but if they broke ND up and joined other bands, they might not get to come to the US at all. Besides, ND sucked out loud for most of the nineties and then got angry and focused again with Enemy of the Music Business. He just said "Say No to War". I thought that was cool of him to speak his peace and then return to roaring like a razorback.

It's punk, so I guess they're expected to live even shittier than the metal guys, but watching 55 year old Joey Shithead at a DOA gig in a small town in Canada play to like 50 kids at 12 bucks a pop made me realize just how committed some of these old school guys are to the lifestyle. No one makes it big in punk or metal, but seeing someone my dad's age still working at that level kinda weirded me out.

A lot of these guys aren't doing it because they're committed to the lifestyle, they're doing it because they can't afford to stop touring and after 20-30 years of not doing anything but touring they're not qualified for any other job that can support them.

I don't care if the band takes themselves seriously or are total joke/gimmick bands as long as the music is good.

No offense to the recommendations, but my god stay away from recent Amorphis. Their current vocalist can't sing clean for poo poo so they use a disgusting amount of autotune on him, yet they keep having him do more and more clean vocals. Silent Waters and before is good though.
