"Djent" is a fictional sub-genre that somehow co-opted a lot of technical/progressive metal bands, but most of the bands who claim to be "djent" don't know how to write interesting song structures and just weedily-weedily-blooop their way through an album and that's about it.

I don't give a poo poo if it sounds like a guitar note, it is still dumb as hell.

You also forgot a section for Czech Republic experimental goregrind and pornogrind/cybergrind. What is wrong with you, Dead Man Posting?

Djent is one of the dumbest things to happen to music.

Wiki posted:

The word "djent" is an onomatopoeia for a heavily palm-muted, distorted guitar chord.

Hey everybody let's just rename each genre of music according to the onomatopoeia's of the type of sound they make. Personally, I think weedily-weedily-blooop would be a better term for that type of music.

Needs Pelican and Animals As Leaders. Would they fit into a 'post metal' or prog section?

I personally would split black into new wave and older stuff, ie old: Burzum, Mayhem, etc; new: Wolves in the Throne Room, Nachtmystium, Watain.

Also a founding/historical band list? Death, Bathory, Venom, etc.

I wouldnt know where to draw a line under it.

Crossover thrash blends thrash more heavily with hardcore and d-beat punk (Cryptic Slaughter, D.R.I., Nuclear Assault). This is up to you guys. There seems to be interest of making genres more region specific (someone wants American death metal as a seperate genre) but I don't know.

Also, even though metal core is considered by some too different from the metal, I am adding it to the post anyways and letting CRIP EATIN BREAD decide to leave it in the OP or not.

I don't understand your question. Yes, there seems to be a lot of people doing what I want them to do -- suggesting the best videos to put up for each genre. And I am putting them up there!

Right now I am limiting the videos in that post to just 4 per genre, but if people think that's too few for metal newbies to "get a feel for the genre", then we can increase it. The problem with more videos for each genre is cluttering, where the post gets too hard to read because of too many embedded YouTube videos.

I figured that a lot of the popular metal from the past decade or so has been related to metalcore, largely due to the radio-friendly style of the MA scene. Would it be useful, or too much information, to do write-ups of more separated sub-genres like Death/Doom & Melodic Death Metal?

Added Helloween and Gamma Ray.

I personally don't consider Iced Earth as Power Metal, at least not much, but someone earlier wanted to add them up there.

Also, goon recommendations don't have a limit. Only videos (four per genre due to loading times and cluttering).

Metal Archives is my preferred resource, it should cover every band recommended except Animals as Leaders and the two that I listed as not-so-metal metallic hardcore. I'll re-do the metalcore videos to condense it down to four that really cover the genre well later, since I put eight to cover subgenres.

Recommendations to add:

Black Metal: Forest of Fog, Wigrid
Grindcore: Pig Destroyer

For death metal, should it be broken into subgenres at all? Melodic death metal, death/doom, death/thrash - that genre will probably accumulate the most recommendations so it might help to split it up a bit. Maybe -1999 and 2000-?
