coyo7e posted:Yeah but why/how does it happen? It seems pretty random, it's not as if it always happens the first time you die to a boss, or when you were already out of souls and humanity (once, I dropped 25+ humanity and respawned with 1 humanity, came back and picked them up and had all my poo poo +1 humanity). It's just weird and unpredictable. I believe you get 1 humanity every time someone recommends one of your messages.

Every time you kill a normal enemy, you get a small percentage of a humanity. That is why it seems you randomly get humanity.

It only applies to areas where you haven't killed a boss yet. So if you grind enemies in an area where you haven't killed the boss, you're going to pick up plenty of that liquid humanity that disappears when you die. If you grind the same enemies just after you kill the boss, it won't work anymore.

Question: If I'm in the darkwraith covenant and I go into New Game + is my covenant still active or do I have to get to Kaathe again before I can invade? On PVP, I love my +5 Lightning Uchigatana. It doesn't do insane amounts of damage from a single slice, but if you have pumped endurance it is fierce. My tactic is to throw a chaos fireball and when the person I've invaded dodges I switch to my sword and rush them with a barrage of swings. They've usually got their shield up and are probably laughing to themselves as I exhaust my stamina bar with each blow, but they fail to notice that the hits they are blocking are still causing their bleed meter to climb until SPLOOOSH! Suddenly a giant chunk of health disappears and they go into panic mode. And with my stamina pumping ring and mask allowing my bar to refill quicker than they anticipate I'm ready to finish them off. Even the most heavily-armored players tend to fall to my blade.

I'm back to using the Ring of Fog because there are no combat rings to wear. I'm wearing the Hornet Ring, but there are no other good choices I have. I don't want to wear RoFaP, and I'm wearing gear that gets me under 50% without Havel's. I have fun shooting people with poison arrows before we close the distance. edit: Cloranthy ring is nice. It was the best game I never actually played! I wonder if there is a novel way to combine efforts or present different LP styles in January? Multiple threads don't really work, my Darksiders run ended up being poorly timed with another thread that started in between the recording of the first 4 episodes and posting to SA. That being said, I love watching people play video games and if any one has any Dark Souls videos to post (like that awesome 90 minute speed run or Vergil PvP fighting) then do it!

My save file corrupted and I had to restart. I was only SL 45 or so. I've got my stuff upgraded and I'm ready to fight the Bell Gargoyles when I think I'll try out the multiplayer (I was always Hollow on my first guy). Immediately get invaded by a guy wearing the Fog Ring. Murder him with the Black Knight Sword. Then a white phantom joins me to kill the Bell Gargoyles, and I feel like he's my best friend in the world. When he zoned in, I twirled the left stick as fast as I could to spin. He immediately did the same. Love.

The attack buttons are on the shoulders of the controller, so be very careful (especially with the PS3) when setting controllers down around peaceful NPCs- you do NOT want to piss off most of them, as they usually provide very useful services.

Learn their attacks, range and timing and you'll always come out on top. Know when to use the lock on button and when not to, this will save you against some bosses. Also always be aware of your surroundings- getting ganged up on is certain death in this game. Good luck! It's not as hard as everyone makes it out to be if you plan ahead a bit

Being disgustingly careful is far and away the best/most important thing when starting out, before you know what you are doing. All else follows from that.

Dizz posted:I finally caved and bought the game. I never played Demon Souls so this will be completely blind for me. Is there anything I need to take note of before playing other than being disgustingly careful? Your shields stability rating is probably the most important thing in the entire game. The more stability you have, the less endurance it requires to block an attack. Find a Hollow Solider Shield or buy a Kite Shield from the blacksmith as soon as possible. Upgrade your shield the second you meet the blacksmith, you can upgrade your other weapons/armor, but it's not as important till much later in the game. Don't horde your ore thinking you will need it later. (However always save Twinkling Titanite) Although armor will provide defensive stats, armor is more about resistance to elements like poison or lightening, buffs, and poise (Being able to ignore getting hit and not getting knocked down). Regardless of what kind of play style you choose, your shield will be the thing you use defensively more then the armor you wear. A naked player with an upgraded shield will be able to effortlessly block an attack that floors and kills a player in full plate armor and no shield. Everyone has their preference to armor and weapons, but no one will dispute how important having a decent upgraded shield is. Also don't hit the loving friendly npcs! And if you hit them by mistake DO NOT KILL THEM!

Seconding. I took the Tiny Being's Ring and it's a P.O.S. (I hadn't read any guides, walkthroughs, forums, or otherwise when I started). I'd recommend that when putting down your controller, either turn it off first, or go into a corner far away from ledges, enemies, and NPCs, and definitely be careful putting it down. Don't hoard your souls at the beginning - it will just cause you pain as someone totally blind to it all (it's painful anyway, but I remember the first few days of Demon's Souls and it was brutal). I'd recommend using them to upgrade weapons/shield and/or pumping Vit and End. Definitely check out the minimum stats required to use whatever your preferred weapon/spell/miracle/etc is, though. As Penny pointed out, shields are important. You will probably get a hollow soldier shield very early on. I use the Eagle shield myself, but I hear Hollow is better (and you don't get Eagle until later on anyway). Pretty much shield block when going around any corner, especially if it's dark. Get the Drake Sword by cutting off the dragon tail when you get there - it will make the next path or two LOADS easier (assuming you melee a lot). Also - for me, the second most important thing after my shield? Stock up a crapton of arrows once you get a short or long bow. Lots of areas seem impossible until you realize you can snipe the poo poo out of mobs, even if it takes forever to do it (I'm looking at you, blighttown and Duke's Archives). Edit: Poison arrows kick rear end. Auracounts fucked around with this message at 02:01 on Oct 29, 2011 |

What's funny is, in a few days, those skeletons are going to seem so laughable, you'll wonder how they ever managed to kill you. When you're this new, though, with low grade weapons, armor, and stats, definitely don't try to take on multiple enemies at once. Try to lure them one at a time. Also, if the enemy looks like a badass (black knights come to mind), they probably are.

The Gravelord "invasion" continues until you find the gravelord sign and invade and kill the Gravelord, or until the Gravelord signs out. I got the Gravelord "disaster" warning before when in Sens fortress, but I'd already cleared the area out and was waiting to get summoned, so I never ran into any black phantom enemies. One of the times I got summoned in Sen's Fortress, the first sound I heard was the summoner getting murdered- I did see some black phantoms before being sent back to my world.
