It seems to disable it when you turn on kinect head tracking.

Turning on multi-screen settings will disable it too.

I picked this up lat weekend after wanting a racing fix, its a great game. I'm on the 4th circuit at the moment and have been wondering about tuning. I'm trying to find a guide on what to do but most things lead to some giant spreadsheet. Do you guys tune your cars or let Forza set everything up? I've been playing with all assistance off and manual /w clutch which is fun but I am bad at going into turns with it.

I'd like to play online but I have a habit of bumping cars by trying to pass during curves and early parts of turns.

I'd venture a guess that most people here tune their own setups. Don't ever do the "quick upgrade" option as I haven't found that to be very optimized at all. I've been trying to find some decent guides myself and this one seems pretty good from a beginner's perspective.

In terms of parts, I usually go with race brakes, the best dampers and roll bars, and everything related to the transmission (clutch, racing transmission, etc) before working on the engine. All of those things will allow you to change the settings under "tune setup" which can be crucial to being competitive, as well as they're all fairly cheap on PI. If you can afford to, always do at least the first stage of weight reduction.

From there, spend the rest of the PI you can afford in your class of choice on engine upgrades and maybe the next best tire compound, do some test driving to see if you're underpowered or overpowered, and start tuning your actual parts. I usually up the PSI a little bit on both tires, lower brake pressure and adjust the brake balance a little towards the front, lower the car a bit and play with the front roll bars if the car is too unruly.

This is all still coming from an amateur, so take the advice with a grain of salt, I'm sure some people would suggest lower tire pressures and spending more PI on weight reduction. In general, I aim for a decent balance between HP and torque and try to make sure my HP:Weight Ratio is decent. Playing with the individual gearing is still a weak spot for me but seems like it could be a big factor in being competitive

I have Forza 2 (got it with my 360) and really loving suck at it. I want to get 4 because it looks awesome, but I'm not sure if I want to buy a wheel. Do most of you folks use wheels?

Some use nice wheels, some use the old Microsoft wheel, some use the Wii-like-wheel. Some use the controller. The game is fun with any of those that suit your need. In-game skill isn't based on controller device... for the most part.

Uh, sometimes it is yea. I can't shift with clutch if I'm using a controller since I can't brake competently with my left middle finger. If I had a good wheel + pedals, I'd be able to control my car and feel it much better, rather then doing the whole stick click business through corners.

And with the same practice somebody without a wheel can learn to use the clutch with the controller and be just as fast. It's just a matter of what you put your time into and what feels right and is within your budget and worthwhile of your gaming experience.

You know you can switch the clutch with the handbrake, then you can just crudley mash the gear up/down and the clutch with the same finger right?

In my opinion, don't dedicate yourself to a wheel until you after you get Forza 4 and you know you are going to like it a lot.

Just FYI, you can change the controller layout so the clutch is not on the left shoulder, but on the X-button instead. That way you can press both clutch and up-/downshift with your thumb at the same time, which is how pretty much everyone else does it AFAIK.

Speaking of the Stig, am I the last person to notice you can designate "The Stig" as the driver of your car when loading a replay?

In the replay selection dialog, there's an option to press X to set the driver. This baffled me when I noticed it.. until I got into the replay and it showed my driver in a completely white suit, when usually he has a colored suit.

Sometimes I will hit replay on a race, then lookup that car on youtube, and compare the engine sounds between the game, and race on youtube. Pretty drat impressive how identical the engine sounds are.

The only thing I don't understand is why Forza or Gran Turismo doesn't simulate acceleration boosts from turbos, vtec engines, or toyota's vvtl-i engines.

It does. If you look at the dyno chart in the upgrade shop, engines with large turbochargers or variable valve timing have noticeable bends in the 4k-6k rpm area where that feature hits and the torque curve suddenly begins climbing faster.

Yes, but that's a bit of a simplified model. Don't know about the other technologies, but for turbos the boost pressure should fall off every time you lift off the throttle, for example during a shift (unless the car is equipped with anti-lag). Right now the boost effect is purely RPM bound, so if you always stay above the boost-kick-in RPM the engine acts as if it were a N/A engine with more power.

I guess it's accurate enough for most purposes, though, and properly modelling the boost would've probably required not so trivial changes to the engine simulation.

It does model boost though, bring up the telemetry and it shows the boost pressure, along with the power and torque, and it definitely changes depending on how hard you're accelerating and what RPM you're at.

No it actually does model it properly. Go into the telemetry screen during a test drive or replay and you can see there's a boost gauge that responds as it should if you lift off the throttle etc.
