WHAT YOU SAY
The whole debate for me isn't so much a physical thing but a mental thing. Vinyl is expensive and it's pressed in limited amounts. It takes time and effort to dig through crates to find that one record and the average DJ can only afford a few records a month. As a DJ its important to not only stay on top of releases but also to find those hidden gems right? So how important is your music to you when you download 50 songs in one sitting and wedge them together until you find stuff that sounds OK, probably not as much.

Buying vinyl and digging for it puts value and weight on your purchases. You spend time listening to every record, making sure that, YES, that's the song I want. I'm not saying the charts are whats ruining the industry, because any DJ worth his weight will have his own collection of artists and labels to follow, but the fact that there is no repercussion to downloading the music. It's significantly cheaper, who cares if you only play the song once or twice, and why bother digging when you can just open your beatport account and download all the latest releases.

I know not everybody is guilty of doing this but that's how I interpret this whole debate.

Jesus! Jesus Christ! Say his name! Jesus! Jesus! Come down now!

The other thing about vinyl vs. digital is the quality control angle. It's like digital vs. physical film - a lot of films schools require that your first student projects be shot on 8mm or 16mm film. I won't pretend like there's not a profit motive there for unis and their chummy business friends (film school materials are very expensive), but there's also a practical advantage for film students in using film that they have to pay for, in that it doesn't allow them to be sloppy. When every shot costs you, you learn how to do it right, and get every aspect of the production right when you get to work. If you don't know what you're doing, you have no business doing it There's less of an incentive there for digital filmmaking.

So in order for a producer to put something on wax they have to be damned sure it's worth the expense, put their money where their mouth is so to speak. No risk, no quality control, unless you've got discipline, and most people don't. Most of the digital-only stuff that's out there isn't worth investing in, frankly.

There's also the stuff that 28GBB mentions, the culture that it creates. Acetates and dubplates that DJs trade and share, that provide the incentive to go to clubs to hear new music, some of which won't be released for months, some of which might never be released. It brings vitality and dynamism to what would otherwise be the DJ equivalent of a covers or greatest-hit set. Not very exciting.

There's too much total poo poo out there due to digital that simply floods genres making it hard to find whats truly good if you're not familiar with the genre already. For bass it's not as bad because you can just stick to established labels and artists if you do buy digi. But i really recommend people buying vinyl just to support the scene even if you don't play it in that medium. It doesn't cost that much and it feels very rewarded as opposed to just buying a lot of worthless mp3's.

The Bass scene is getting quite bad for the simple fact they are not putting enough emphasis on the vinyl releases. Like in some cases the digital is a few weeks BEFORE the vinyl... why? All i hear is that digital doesn't even sell much in the first place yet they go out of their way to make it released as soon as possible. My ideal situation would be just release it after a set time, like a month. And keep at least 1 exclusive on vinyl. The one nice change is getting a free CD or download code along with LP's.. only costs like 2 quid more. That's a very nice incentive.

I'd love for more people to get involved in buying physical releases, you'll soon see the fun. And you still got quite a lot of value in them too if you ever want to resell. I got Julio Bashmore - Everybody Needs A Theme Tune at it's release in January for the normal price, around 7 pounds. Now it's up on discogs going for 80 pounds.

I think this is a really great point too. I think a lot of people think that wobbles, filth, Skrillex, etc. are going to kill actual scenes but in general I think the fans of that music are not people who were hardcore into dance music in the first place. Like, people who like Skrillex for the most part are people who heard a couple of Daft Punk songs once and thought nothing of it, and dance music is kind of a novelty for them. This is a big generalization, and I know you can hear Skrillex in sets from legit DJs, but it's kind of just how I think about it.

FWIW, this is pretty much me. I've never been into electronic music, and outright mocked my friends who were, and then in the span of about a month I discovered weed + psychadelics + dubstep, and far as I'm concerned if there's ever been a genre designed to be listened to on drugs it's heavy DnB.

Ever since this whole internet brostep thing emerged after dubstep got big, I've tried branching out from my usual favorites of Skrillex/Flux Pavillion/Pretty Lights/Feed Me but I keep coming back to the harder stuff, mainly because if I want a (relatively) slow melodic song, I'd rather hear a vocal or guitar-centric tune. Dubstep was the first thing to make my fat white rear end dance like an idiot, so I'll always remember it for that. I've found that electronica in general is great dance/sex/tripping/background music, but it's not something I'd get deeply 'into.'

So, I brought my subwoofer + speaker set to work and was blastin' "Safe or Sorry" - Vaski...and this customer that came in thought it was Skrillex. That worries me. Anyways, I wrote down what the track was (I'm not the music elitist type) and gave it to him to find on his own and told him to not even worry about Skrillex.

That's another thing altogether though. Peeps need to stop being sheisty with good music. You sit there and complain about these kids hopping on a genre you enjoy via some producer that you may not enjoy, but rather than share and broaden their horizons, you just sit on all of your own good poo poo and laugh at them because "they just won't ever know". How does that help anything?

Yep, this. I'm part of a crew who run a bi-weekly student(ish) night in Exeter, UK. For a UK town, the underground music scene is TINY. There are a couple of other promoters who bring names down - one who has started getting people like Hackman, Blawan etc, and another who specialise in weighty dubstep; Distance, Benton, et al. Both these promoters are great, but they're pretty infrequent - both have nights once every couple of months, simply because there isn't the demand necessary to have a headliner every week or something.
This is where the night I'm involved in is really thriving - we've started a small but regular thing, and started building a scene around it - t-shirts, a proper online presence with regular music and scene-related updates, a proper brand, good graphic design, etc. It's amazing how receptive people are to new music once you show them that there's no elitism around it, it's just in the context of having a good loving party.
It's got to the point now that we're hitting the club's capacity every single time, and so with a crowd of 300 students who have otherwise spent their entire uni career going to top 40 clubs (that's all there is), I can get away with playing everything from 'Skeng' to Night Slugs edits of r&b tunes in one set and they'll LOVE it. 28GBB is so right about the positives of starting a regular thing to form a scene.

Not really no, Juke/Footwork is way too fast for House(like it's 160bpm or so) and it's all cut-up samples and what not. Very repetitive(but not in a bad way).

I'll need to cop out on this and leave an explanation to someone who knows more than me about it. It's not something that I really listen to, though I got brought up to (a very slow) speed a wee bit in the last thread by some good posters. It made a lot more sense though when I seen the music along with the dancing and the battles. It clicked then. But I guess if I want something that speed I just fall back into Jungle.

Planet Mu released a comp called Bangs & Works last year which I've been told is a pretty good look at it all. I think they've just released a second volume as well.

And in other news did anyone read the harsh review Pitchfork gave the new Joker album? I can't comment personally as I've not heard it, but to be honest Joker was always very hit and miss for me from day one. And as much as I'm ashamed to admit it, I have a feeling if/when I do get round to hearing the album I may just agree a bit with Pitchfork. I had reservations with the lead single he released a while ago. It kinda seemed like it was crafted for a bit more of a pop appeal, but had sadly forgetten an extra chorus or two along with any edge it may have had to set it apart and keep it useful for the underground(I think it was the Jessie Ware track?).

A lot of juke (at least of the DJs Rashad / Spinn variety) is more or less recognizable as a gonzo take on Ghetto House. Raunchy party music stuff. Footwork's a weirder beast. The composition stuff I'm not smart enough to explain, but it's generally run in odd time signatures and is solely designed for dance battles which are apparently a sight to behold. Compare that Rashad track to DJ Nate. Also notice the percolating drums.

Here's the video that introduced me to juke years and years ago, I think it does a good job of showcasing the general dance style and tempo. Not the best tune in the world but it's okay:

DJ Slugo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrftqT5pPg4

The thing I like most about Juke is how similar it is to golden era Jungle tunes actually. 160+bpm, dirty/raw production style, lots of soul and funk samples, deep bass, what more could you ask for?!

Lots of people are straight up blending jungle and juke now in their productions. They are very easy to mix together. We've been talking about Phillip D. Kick a little bit in the junglist thread in PHIZ, but I'll go ahead and post his link here. I think he's doing the jungle/juke mashup stuff the best out of anyone right now:

You really can't talk about juke without understanding footwork battles. Individual routine watching is fine, but battles are where everything really comes out. This is one of my favorite footwork battles. If you've listened to any juke, please just watch Walacam videos for hours, it will really just change how you look at footworking music. Light bulb kills it. Footworking music, unlike other forms of dance music, puts the dancer before the music. In most music in general, the music comes before everything else to a large extent, but in Footwork, the dancing is what is more important by far.

Yeah I second the Walacam videos. I think it was those videos that made the lightbulb in my head go *bing* and I was like,"Oh I get it now", as before I was approaching it like anything else, as like individual pieces. Like I said it's not really something I listen to on an individual track basis, but it's a lot better when you see battles like that.

Actually it really reminds me of Grime in that way. Grime used to have a pretty big DVD scene about it. So the DVD would come out with interviews, music videos(all low budget Channel U kind of things), live battles or whatever. The first time I think you really started to see DVD used properly and really incorporated into the music scene, rather than just say a live performance of a band or whatever. Sadly pretty much killed off with the rise of Youtube. Shame as stuff like SB.TV would've made a great DVDzine kinda thing.
