I'm all for rescuing old shelter cats and poo poo but trust me, if it's your first cat... you haven't lived until you've had a kitten fall asleep in your hands.. - only to wake up 5 minutes later to run off and swing from your curtains  Btw I'm a little bit allergic to cat hair (and dust and whatnot), but in my experience it's easy if you just stick to certain rules (e.g. don't let cat sleep on your bed)
