Anyone have any recommendations for an Amazon S3 client? Ideally one that allows me to use S3 for time machine backups?

computer parts posted:Filevault 2 is pretty seamless, and aside from requiring the recovery partition and having to login before most stuff boots up I haven't really noticed any difference with it on. You may have to reformat the backup disk in order to encrypt it. The partition map for the disk needs to be GUID. If it's APM or MBR, the disk has to be reformatted as GUID. Otherwise, you cannot activate FileVault 2 full disk encryption. When you encrypt the backup disk via the Time Machine preference pane,* Time Machine will detect whether the disk requires reformatting and will: 1. Warn you first. 2. Allow you to reformat from within the TM prefs. * You can enable backup disk encryption from the Select Disk sheet in the TM prefs. I don't use Amazon S3, so I cannot confirm this, but I would think Transmit should accomplish this. I know it can connect to Amazon S3, and it allows you to mount servers as disks, so you should be able to mount an S3 share as a disk and then use that for your TM volume. You can download a free trial and find out.

Arq is the best option for S3 backup. For just dumb file transfer/viewing, use Cyberduck.

I would also avoid relying on anything that plays tricks to export or synthesize from an S3 store something that resembles an AFP or HFS+ file system. I just finally upgraded to Lion the other day and now I am having airport problems. My network is still set as my preferred network and it is set to automatically connect, but when I open and close the lid on my laptop it either A. disconnects from the network and I have to go back to it manually or, B. Stays connected but the internet wont work until I refresh the page 5 or six times. Help? Edit: also, sometimes it works fine (maybe 10%). I don't get it. veni veni veni fucked around with this message at 20:16 on Nov 10, 2011 |

Mine did the same thing and if I recall correctly there was a patch within a week of Lion's release that fixed it.

Lately I've been having problems with youtube. As you can see, it created a hole in my browser. This happens if I have the browser open for a while, and the only fix is to restart chrome/firefox. Sound still works, and youtubes that were open before it bugs out are unaffected. Has anyone else had these problems?

I installed the updates that it had been bugging me about yesterday. Since then, when I connect to a network it says I'm connected. However, I can't send/receive any data for 40 seconds or so. Safari says I'm not connected to the internet. When I press the network diagnostic button is says everything is a-ok. Did one of the updates break something?

The problem I've been having with Airport is that whenever I wake up my MacBook Pro from sleep, it shows a huge list of available WiFi networks instead of auto-connecting to my preferred one. It's the only connection I have on the list of connections it should automatically connect to after sleep but the list pops up every time regardless, and it's a pain in the rear end to scroll to 20-30 connections to find mine. I've had Lion since it was released and I'm pretty sure it didn't do this before. Edit: I should point out that I have every update they've released. I've been having a problem with uploading pictures from iPhoto to Facebook. I click on the Facebook button down at the bottom after selecting an event, it asks me to log in and comes up with the message "An error occurred with iPhoto Uploader. Please try again later." I tried downloading iPhoto Exporter, and it gives the same message when I attempt to log in. I've looked this error up with a page worth of results and no particular solution. Any ideas?

I've used VisualHub to encode videos forever, but now that I actually need it for work it's gone tits up by refusing to register. I assume it's because the company that develops it is no longer around. Sucks bc VH was the best tool I ever used. Am I boned? Is there no way to register the product now that the company is defunct? I know FilmRedux is sort of the same thing but it doesnt have the options I need.

Does anyone have any issues with Preview.app being incredibly slow to search through PDF files. I typically have 40 or 50 odd PDFs open at once and sticking even a few letters in the search bar causes Preview to freeze for a minute at a time. Even with individual PDFs open it still lags noticeably when you try and search for anything. It's a mid 2009 MBP with 8GB of ram and a crucial m4. So I don't feel that I should be seeing preview struggle as much as it does. Spotlight etc work pretty much instantaneously.

Screen savers in the year of our lord 2011? Your display turns off and on almost instantly. Who cares about screen savers made for '90s CRT displays.

Not inconceivable that people might want to look at a pretty picture before for a while and have their monitor DPMS sleep a short while after that. I have my monitor set to screensaver for a minute before it goes into DPMS sleep because, while the difference between literally instant wakeup and a two second DPMS wakeup isn't a big deal, it is a small difference in time.

I like the idea of a fireplace screensaver. Or an aquarium. Or some other boring cliche poo poo. And yes, I realize the screen isn't actually being saved because it's not a CRT, I still like 'em.

Lion's Preview.app feels like a giant piece of garbage compared to previous versions. I use it to quick sort some of my digital pix, and image loading times are absolutely sloth-like for any significant number of them. Not really to your issue, but I also hate how they removed the zoomable thumbnail view, and also moved it to the left side. Far too many beach balls when using this new version, as I wait for it to decide to do something. Sad when Quicklook seems more functional

I thought I was the only one who felt Preview took a step backwards. Functionality I need is still there, but somehow it feels a lot slower than the 10.6 version. Even as I went from a Core2 to an i7.

This one, probably: http://blog.pixelbreaker.com/polarclock It's a cool looking clock but functionally-wise I always felt it was more of an affectation than it was useful. I like my plain clock that I can see at a glance without having to gather the time from four different moving bars. Just my two cents though, obviously not ragging on anyone for using it. I mean in the end if someone enjoys something then it's not really my business why. Maybe they just like how it looks some kinda jackal fucked around with this message at 22:25 on Nov 12, 2011 |

Not sure where to ask this, figured I'd try here. I just got a MacBook Pro since my Dell seems to be on the fritz. I've been trying to use the Migration Assistant to get my pictures and music over, but I have no idea where it puts the files. I expected the pictures to show up in the Mac picture folder but no such luck. I've tried Googling around but can't seem to find a straight answer. Where is the assistant putting my stuff?
