If you have a high enough Guns skill, I think you can get two K9000s. One to modify, one to turn into FIDO. The cyberdog mods are the best weapon mod names in the game.

A fully modded K9 does more damage than FIDO. There are only two or three dog guns in the game, I think, making it one of the rarest non-unique weapons. e: just two. One received from the Think Tank, one nabbed off the Master Trauma Harness in X-12.

My Fallout 2 starting goals were always to run from combats early and rush to get some levels from random conversations and fetch quests; three or four levels worth of points dumped into a tagged guns or energy weapons skill usually means I can finally shoot those rats.

Or it's bad / missing and the next time you run a cached file integrity check, it'll be replaced and "fixed". Unrelated to that, I just discovered the real way to disable v-sync via the INI file tweak, and my framerate went up by 10-20 with no discernible loss in quality. I wish I knew about this sooner! I thought it was HDR sucking it all up, but apparently that has no effect on my framerate at all, so I turned it back on after not having used it in a while, and WOW things can glow!

Francois Kofko posted:[i was asking out of personal curiosity because i haven't actually played fallout 2 either] You should. I hold the curmudgeonly opinion that you're perfectly fine going from FO to FO2 to FO: NV without ever touching FO3. New Vegas has so many callbacks to FO and FO2 it's ridiculous (awesome.) Positronic Spleen posted:Yeah, it makes the game much less janky with no apparent downside. ipresentinterval is one of those lines I've always set to "0" since Oblivion. That's sound advice any way you look at it. FO3 absolutely mauled canon if you care about that, and if you don't it was just an objectively inferior game anyway. And I say all this as someone whose first experience with Fallout was that game... I got FO and FO2 not long after out of curiosity and it was a hell of an eye opener. Only FO3 that exists as far as I'm concerned is Van Buren

The only thing I really didn't like about the beginning of the game so far has been the loving "Here is the varied and open world of Fallout, where you can explore the vast postapocalyptic wasteland, travel to new towns and unfurl a rich and detailed storYOU WILL NOW FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE COMBAT SYSTEM. YOU MUST DO THIS BEFORE YOU ARE ALLOWED TO PLAY THE VIDEO GAME." temple. Basically a cross between 3's "baby" sequence and one of the sewer levels. Edit: That's one of the things they finally got right with New Vegas. "Can you walk? Can you click on things? Awesome, what do you want your stats to be? Welcome to Fallout!" Edit: Haha, Vault City was sent 100 water chips by mistake. The entire first two games would never have happened if it wasn't for a shipping error. Pretty much save/load spam till I could get to the end of it, where finally my smooth talking would come into play and I wouldn't have to fight the guy there. Good thing too, or I'd never get through unless I made a character that was good with unarmed or melee.

If there are still inhabitants there, you may be able to follow one through into the red sector, or possibly kill one to get his keycard (I'm not sure if the latter will work).

Speaking of smooth talking and gunslingers, I'm playing through the NV Bounties mod while I try figure out how to unfuck Dead Money, and holy poo poo does this own. I nearly lost my poo poo at the Kelly gang For anyone who hasn't tried this, it's definitely worth playing. The voice acting ranges from passable at worst to excellent, and the writing isn't too bad. There's lots of little nods and winks to things throughout but they're not overly clumsy or juvenile like most mods that try to do the same, and the missions are challenging and (at times) pant-shittingly tense. I crept into a cavern only to find it was some kind of Ghoul bootcamp and proceeded to make the biggest mess I have ever seen in the game, it was like the O.K. Corral but with ten times the shooters in a small cavern. Oh, and with a loving FN FAL and high explosives. Head to the FO:NV modding thread, there's links to Part I and II and other cool things.
