Ahoy goons!

Was able to scratch a life-goal off of the ol' bucket list this last weekend when I got the opportunity to spin in front of a very 'receptive' audience of about 40 at a House/Birthday party for a friend. The set is a very brisk 55 minutes and was live mixed using Ableton Live 8 and my awesome little KORG NanoKontrol.

Hard House / Electro House / Chicago House...call it what you want, but it got the dance floor moving!

The full, uncut mix is up on my SoundCloud now for download/streaming.

Individual tracks can be downloaded as a .rar off of zippyshare.com.

Track list:

Input absolutely welcome, goons know their poo poo.

EDIT: FYI, if you listen to nothing else the Adele bootleg (Track 10) is killer.

A mix for November, not really sure I'm keen on the overall flow but it's something. I guess best described as minimal/house with strong melodies moving towards techno at the end? First mix is a bit rocky. Feedback appreciated

This is the first time I made something like this. It's mainly hip hop and electro-house with some general electronic dance music in there, I guess. I made it in Ableton but not live.. not sure I have the equipment to do that very well and I'm not a DJ, just having fun! It's about 31 minutes long and 128 kbps.

What's a good way to think about the "flow" of a set? Is it just knowing the music really well and putting something that seems right? I haven't noticed anything when listening to professional DJ mixes but maybe that means it's working. A couple times I tried pairing songs with broadly similar sounds (e.g. a bass-heavy song after a bass-heavy song) but I think the set I posted above is a little all over the place and probably doesn't "flow" very well, though again I'm not totally sure what to listen for.

You need a start and an end point (and maybe some points in between), and the songs should build up or down to meet those points. You make the flow of your set. Where do you want it to go and how do you want it to get there? You need to know your music really well to have a coherent "flow".

As a stereotype, a mix would start off 'slower' or 'weaker' and build up to whatever 'beatport dance floor destruction secret track' (I actually got an email from beatport with this title)

It also depends on if you are playing live or making a mix, if you're playing live you have to play to your timeslot and make your 'flow' accordingly. If you are opening you need to start off slow and end it wherever the next guy is going to start from. It's also not that simple, if you are live you need to read the crowd and adjust accordingly. If you're closing and the crowd is still going crazy you should probably just play bangers or high energy poo poo or whatever.

This was kinda disorganized but hopefully you take something from it. If you have a list of songs and you're playing them randomly then there isn't any 'flow'.

e: depending on the genre DJs do pretty different stuff. Techno mixes are usually pretty progressive, I've seen dubstep/dnb djs that just will drop a killer track without a buildup which works pretty well for that genre, and it 'flows' pretty well when done right

When I started DJ'ing the most heard cliché was that a good DJ tells a story by playing records. At first I thought this was pretty much the dumbest take on DJ'ing, because a DJ in my opinion just played records by mastering the techniques. But in more recent years I've begon to realize that this story telling cliche is pretty much the backbone of being a DJ in stead of being just another person playing records. Because pretty much anybody can mix a couple of random tracks together, given enough time and banana's I could probably even learn a chimpansee to beatmatch two tracks, so then there must be something more to it than just technique.
As a DJ you'll have to learn to understand music, to see through a track to know what it will do to an audience, you'll have to learn to read your crowd and then learn to play with their feelings. Playing banger after banger will earn you respect at peaktime, but will earn you a punch in the face when opening a night. This is the storytelling, you'll have to capture your audience and then take them with you on a journey that blend the familiar with the unfamiliar.
No one likes a boring story filled with cliché's and where everything goes as you expect it to go. Then again no one likes a story that is too complicated and doesn't make a connection with its audience. So to me DJ'ing is a fine balancing act between comforting an audience at one end and taking them into the unknown at the other. It is this fine line that becomes your trademark as a DJ and it's founded on your record collection and your skill to string them together. Dare to be creative and try to be a step ahead.

OK i can see that. Maybe mine is more of a "mixtape" then, cuz it doesn't really build anywhere overall. I was going for an ebb-and-tide pattern, a couple high energy songs and then some more relaxed ones etc.

WHAT YOU SAY
XPOST FROM HOUSE THREAD :siren:

Anybody want some ridiculous techno? I don't usually play this stuff is it was a real treat playing this for a crowd. I got drunk and had lots of fun, expect a lot of filters (lovely digital filters :( ), loops and extended breakdowns, effects, and techno thats so ridiculous its almost funny. This is all for fun so hopefully I make you dance in your room. Sound drops out a few times on last two songs because I was helping the DJ after me set up. Mostly improv, just for fun. Hope you have as much fun as I did.

New mix, horrorstep and drumfilth. I mean, gently caress. My bad, it's rap and funk and boogie.

Doctor Rope

My new hard/electro (pop?) house mix built for those cold winter nights crammed on a hot dance floor. I've always gotten great input from goons in the past, so I'd love to hear what y'all think. Live mixed using Ableton Live 8.0.8
