Hey, does that guy who works at Insound still post in this thread? I just got an offer emailed to me hawking preorders of Dropped Piano by Tim Hecker for 10% off, but I'd already preordered on 10/18. Any way I could get that discount applied to my existing preorder? I'd responded to the email offer but haven't heard anything back yet.

Welp, I seemed to have stumbled into a gold mine of bad disco and movie soundtracks over the weekend. A roller rink went out of business and was selling everything off so I bought what was left of their vinyl about 100 LPs. Still going through it seeing what I got. Anyway these are some pretty recent additions.

I got my first parallel groove vinyl in the mail today, which happens to be the first single from Atlas Sound's Parallax.

It's a neat gimmick, but I have definitely noticed the volume and compression issues. Is it safe to assume that this is characteristic of all parallel grooved records? I do not plan on buying very many more, but this is more for curiosity's sake.

The max volume of a track is basically inversely proportional to the length of the side (this is why they make 12" singles for DJs and audiophiles). When you have parallel grooves you basically double that effect (or triple, or quadruple, depending on the number of parallel grooves), so it could possibly have the same quality as a regular record if they made it half as long.

I know what you did last summer, and frankly I am displeased.
I have a pretty whacky parallel groove record. It's a flexi-disc that came with an old Mad Magazine. The first verse describes a "Super spectacular day" the second verse is different every time you play it and describes a bunch of horrible things that could happen to you. It's kind of beat up because me and my brother played it god knows how many times when we were kids. Still works though.

edit: Oh poo poo! someone posted it on youtube with all the different endings.

I hate my job but it pays me; my revenge comes in the form of buying vinyl by the assload. Check out the last few months' haul:

- Leyland Kirby, Intrigue & Stuff Vol. 3
- The Caretaker, Persistent Repetitions of Phrases (can something be a long-time grail if it's only been out for like three years?)
- Korallreven, An Album By Korallreven (Acephale's streak of unimpeachably beautiful sleeves & records remains unbroken)
- Elite Gymnastics, Ruin (see above)
- Porcelain Raft, Gone Blind EP (see above, although I had to settle for the less-limited version)
- Christopher Hobbs/John Adams/Gavin Bryars, Ensemble Pieces
- Gavin Bryars, The Sinking of the Titanic/Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (I've only ever heard the [unbelievably awesome] Bryars/Jeck/Alter Ego version of this piece before so this was quite a treat)
- Gavin Bryars, Hommages
- Talk Talk, Spirit of Eden
- Talk Talk, Laughing Stock
- Mark Hollis, s/t
- the new Soft Moon EP, LE version
- the Blouse album, LE version
- Bryan Ferry, The Bride Stripped Bare
- Philip Glass, Mishima OST
- Fleetwood Mac, Tusk (replacing my old beat-to-poo poo version)
- Van Dyke Parks, Arrangements Vol. 1
- The Beach Boys, The Smile Sessions (THIS IS SO GOOD)
- Todd Rundgren, Something/Anything? reissue
- Spiral Jetty, Tour of Homes
- The Feelies, Here Before
- Yung Wu, Shore Leave (now I just need Time For A Witness and the Trypes EP)
- Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom, El Monte 12" (last Delia & Gavin record I needed. also picked up a v. snazzy DFA pin.)

and then a gigantic shitton of awesome cheap stuff from one Discogs guy, which all arrived in one box:
- Berlin, Pleasure Victim
- ABC, Lexicon of Love
- Sheila E., The Glamorous Life
- Human League, Dare
- Laurie Anderson, Mister Heartbreak
- Laurie Anderson, Big Science
- The Bongos, Drums Along The Hudson
- Yaz, Upstairs at Eric's
- Carol Douglas, Burnin'
- Al Green, The Belle Album
- Wings, At The Speed Of Sound
- Tangerine Dream, Stratosfear
- Tangerine Dream, Phaedra
- Hall & Oates, Abandoned Luncheonette
- v/a, Music For 58 Musicians
- Dwight Twilley, Twilley
- Sylvester, Living Proof
- Bryan Ferry, Bete Noire
- Happy Mondays, Bummed

and these should be showing up from Experimedia any day now:
- Steve Hauschildt, Tragedy & Geometry
- Nova Scotian Arms/Motion Sickness of Time Travel, Crystal Anniversary split
- Lee Noble, Horrorism
- Jacob Feige & Keith Freund, From The Museum Of Natural History
- Willamette, Echo Park
- Hive Mind, Elemental Disgrace

Right, this is going to be a really stupid post but maybe some people ITT can help me out here. Just what the gently caress are vinyl records and how on earth do they work? The entire concept and idea is just sort of beyond me, when I look at a record and the pin on the player and everything it just doesn't make sense. I get that it's all bumps and grooves and vibrations or whatever but seriously wtf. Please explain for I am a simpleton

also, easier question to answer - is there anything wrong with getting a cheap record player as opposed to a more expensive one? I mean mainly in terms of sound quality, do expensive ones sound better?

I know, right? Digital playback is so much more intuitive, what with the lasers and the binary numbers and whatnot.

Well, yeah. Do you think people are paying more just for the looks? Cheaper ones have different shaped styluses at different weights and, not to mention, are rarely built to last. While the cartridge will likely have more influence than the turntable itself (though sound isolation, platter noise etc. are definitely very noticeable sound factors decided by the turntable), there's a reason people pay thousands of dollars for this stuff, even if it's not necessarily perceivable differences.

Ok, so with Christmas coming up I am going to ask for a new turntable and speakers. I think I am going to go with the Sony PS-LX250H Automatic Belt-Drive Turntable, it's $75 on Amazon and seems to get generally very good reviews. I was wondering if anyone has this table and can offer their own review as compared to my current ION USB turntable. The motor on the Ion is off so it spins too fast, but I'm wondering how the Sony compares to a stock Ion.

For speakers I'm planning to get Sony SS-B3000 Bookshelf Speakers, anyone else out there have them and want to give some feedback? Thanks guys, I'm not on the forums much these days, but I'm glad this thread is still going strong.

Good news for White Stripes fans (especially those of use who are poor)! Third Man is reissuing a few of the hard to find out of print singles. The reissues will be of these:
Hello Operator/Jolene
Candy Cane Children/Story of the Magi, Silent Night
The Big Three Killed My Baby/Red Bowling Ball Ruth
Lord Send Me an Angel/You're Pretty Good Looking for a Girl(Trendy American Remix)

If they're anything the other recent reissues of early White Stripes material, they're going to be analog remasters. At least one of these (Lord Send Me an Angel) specifies that this is the case. Hello Operator is almost certainly an analog remaster as well because it'll probably be sourced from the recent picture disc release of that single from the Vault package. So not only are these drastically cheaper than buying the originals, but they'll sound better too.

1200's don't play at 78, so you would need a turntable that plays back at 78. If you're looking to do it on the cheap, the portable Numark plays at 78:

http://www.numark.com/pt01

Beware though, 78's will eat through a needle, so you may want to get a spare needle just for the project. Whatever you do, don't use a USB turntable for transferring, whatever soundcard you have is almost definitely better.

This burrito is delicious, but it is filling.
You'll need a stylus specifically for 78s. They had a wider groove, so most modern styluses just ride along the bottom in the detritus. Audacity can do the 45>78 speedup for you.

e: depending on how old the records are, they might be pre-RIAA, so you might have to mess around in the EQ settings.

You can record at 45 RPM and then correct the speed in digital, but you won't be able to play 78s unless you have a 78 cartridge/stylus, so you'll need that.
