What would be the easiest way of converting my entire video library. I essentially want to bring down file size while keeping image quality as best I can. I would also like to amalgamate the filetype used. Currently my library consists of .avi, .mkv, .mp4, etc... best option for compatibility would probably be to convert to .avi/xvid. Tried handbrake as it does everything else pretty well but doesn't fit the bill in this case. I want something where I can drag dump a queue of files in and have it spit them out to a folder. Ideas?

Personally, I'm a huge fan of iA Writer. It just seems so much more elegant than the other options. The other stuff just feel like imitations. It's very well thought out, updates often, and the font it uses is perfect. It's currently 75% cheaper than what I paid for it at $4.99. Even at $20 it's completely worth it though, at least for me. I used to like OmmWriter, but it pales in comparison to iA Writer.

Oh right. Being a Hack user I also forgot that every Mac actually ships with wifi so it's not an issue for people with The Real Thing(tm) I was going to go off on a tangent about having to hack it to work with my friend's MacBook because I don't have wifi installed, but then that's just me being Cheapy McCheaperson. It's not even for all wifi hardware , you need one of the relatively recent models that can do wifi direct type stuff. The big advantage is that you don't have to be on a network at all, just need to be within wireless range.

Has anyone had trouble connecting to Software Update recently? Running Lion 10.7.2 on MBP using Time Machine Airport - latest firmware. No proxies. Software Update tells me that it can't check for updates because of a network problem and then prompts me to run Network Diagnostics. After ND runs it reports that my internet connection appears to be working correctly. Rebooted, etc. and nothing appears to resolve this.

Lion is really starting to piss me off with how it opens previously opened documents when you launch a program. For example, when I launch Excel, it opens several recent spreadsheets and I waste my time closing them. When I launch TextEdit, it opens several recent text documents. Hell, when a co-worker wanted to show me a video of his dog on his laptop using Quicktime, it loving launched a porn video in the background. Anyone know how to stop this?

This might be the wrong thread, and if so, apologies in advance. Does anyone know of a way to stream MKV files with subs to an XBOX 360? Connect360 won't have a bar of them. And I've tried ps3mediaserver but xbox barfs when I try and play them. Is there some magical setting in ps2mediasever (mencoder seems to bitch sbout it) or am I poo poo out of luck here?

You may have luck with Serviio, but I have no idea. I've never tried to stream MKV files with soft subtitles. I sort of gave up streaming anyway, as seeking tends to fail spectacularly on streams. So I mostly just copy the videos over using the streaming server as the source, which takes forever with large MKV files.

I recently upgraded from Outlook 2007 on Windows to Outlook 2011 on OSX and I have (what I think is) a relatively simple question that Google wasn't able to give me an answer on. I copied over my archive.pst to the Mac and imported it into Outlook. All of my files showed up in Outlook. But, do you know if I can delete the actual PST file? I'm thinking the answer is yes since Outlook imported it and didn't just open it. But I'd hate to delete this 4gb file and lose all of my archive. Anyone know?

Outlook is storing that mail in the pst, so I wouldn't delete it.

Yes, but if you're squeamish, move it to an external drive. edit: Outlook 2011 imports the .PST, so the original isn't used.

Is there some secret to making Remote Disc not completely suck? Between my MBA and my wife's Mini, my Windows 7 desktop is the only disc drive we've got left. I've installed the Apple disc sharing utility thing, but it just seems to decide on a whim whether or not it will work, and when Remote Disc does see my computer, it'll very slowly read what's on it. Eventually it seems to start working okay, but by that point I'm usually already fed up with messing with it. I probably just need to break down and buy the drat external drive.

Sorry if this has already been asked (I'm sure it has) but are there any free text editors for OS X that dont suck? gedit crashes constantly in Lion, Kod is too black, I hate the TextWrangler tab system (cant seem to put them along the top of the screen), TextEdit is too basic, emacs is too emacs, KomodoEdit/Bluefish/etc are more like IDE's and I'd like something more lightweight. I really just want something like gedit: lightweight, tabs along the top of the screen, syntax highlighting, bracket matching, thats basically it. Haha. Fraise was actually originally forked from Smultron after the dude decided to stop working on it. Then the Mac App Store came out and the guy realized he could make a quick buck and revived Smultron. Or that's the narrative in my head, as a I remember it.

Fraise should be https://www.assembla.com/wiki/show/fraise, which shows that it's now dead and a new text editor is in the works.

Yeah, Fraise was originally called Smultron with a slightly higher version number. The original developer, Peter Borg, asked him to change it though. Then Fraise's development stopped because its developer wants to write a new text editor from scratch (No news on this since last year). And the Fraise fork is called Strawberry, which I just tried out and its completely barebones right now. But as I said, Smultron is bad right now. Just look at this UI. Man, I wish we had a nice text editor for Lion. All I want is tabs (or a sidebar), syntax highlighting, and Lion full screen. vkeios fucked around with this message at 06:21 on Nov 22, 2011 |

This drove me nuts, eventually I downloaded the Microsoft Intellipoint drivers and forced compatibility to my non-Microsoft mouse by editing the hardware IDs into the driver it installs, MicrosoftMouse.kext. It's not perfect but it's really close. USB Overdrive just isn't as good for whatever reason.

There's an editor called Chocolat (http://chocolatapp.com/) in the works with all of that, except (a) it's still in "alpha" and (b) shaping up to be quite pricey ($50?). The combination of those two factors mean it's free right now however.

I've run all the updates on my 15"MBP and I'm having WiFi issues. It shows that the airport is connected to my home network, but I don't have a connection. It takes about a minute to actually get any data traffic. When I open Safari, it tells me I'm not connected. If I click Network Diagnostics it says that everything is working.
