Saw Prosumer last night in a super intimate venue (100~) people. I have nothing but great things to say about this night, he brought several record crates and played a full vinyl set. It was a lot of fun seeing him get really into his music and sing along with all the vocal tracks. It was pretty much a straight old school house set. Our older local house DJs used to spin stuff like that but they are all on the deep house kick right now and I miss my upbeat jacking house music, it was a real treat. One of those nights where you come in and next thing you know its already 5 AM. Hopefully we get more P-bar djs here because drat I want more now.

I have minimal concert experience in this scene, how much actual work can you expect out of a dj when performing live? I mean, when I go see someone I sort of want them to do something that I can't get at home listening to Spotify.

Anything beyond that is superfluous, and you shouldn't even necessarily expect to see the DJ, just hear his work. If you're referring to the complaints about Avicii above, pre-recorded sets are a huge faux pas.

Yeah, that's about what I hoped. I was watching another board when the whole Steve Angello thing went down, and some people argued that a dj shouldn't have to do anything live since the audience is just there to dance. That just seemed like a huge loving rip-off to me.

While track selection and a good mixing job is THE backbone to a DJ's set, I disagree with the sentiment that it should be the only expectation out of a live show. There are plenty of people who are there to see the actual DJ's performance as well as to dance and have a great time. There's plenty of downtime between selecting the next track and mixing it in - A DJ should be doing SOMETHING to enhance the experience in between track switches, even if it's just clever use of cross-fading.

I think part of the experience is having high quality music blasted in your ears at 115 decibels around super hot babes. I don't think spotify can do that yet.

Except, you're in the arena, with a group of people who appreciate the same thing you do.

Dj sets compared to gigs (live bands etc) are usually cheaper too, so i can pay like £25 to hear around 4 hours of music from 2 or 3 bands at a gig where i could probably go to 2 large EDM events for that amount and get 12 hours worth from a number of different dj's in the same kind of setting. That said it depends what you are into to be honest.

Anyone listen to Dusty Kid's Beyond That Hill yet? Amazing album, not for the dancefloor but still very much techno. Lots of interesting melodies and sounds. I've also been listening to Luna by Romboy and Bodzin on repeat past few days, and Oliver Huntemann's newest album just came out too. I hear from some people its the best release of the year, any opinions? Hello thread, I mostly just lurk to find new music and stuff but this time I really need your help! I'm going to this festival tomorrow (Stereosonic in Sydney) and there's a time slot with Afrojack, Dirty South, and Madeon playing at the same time but on different stages. I'd like to see Madeon, but I think Dirty South would be fun, and I don't really listen to Afrojack or know what he's like live. Anybody have any thoughts/suggestions/experiences about these? I'm not a big fan of Afrojack, and I don't really know Dirty South's DJ sets well, but here is an example setlist. I'm not that big of a fan of Madeon, but he hasn't DJed a whole lot - could be interesting - especially since he's too young to go to most clubs. If this is what you're talking about, I'd make sure to at least see Zombie Nation, Claude VonStroke, Deetron (for sure those three), and maybe Annie Mac or Kaskade or Alison Wonderland (maybe on those three). I'd just relax during the 5 o'clock time slot hah. Minimix of Afrojack's Greatest Hits (A must listen to, don't remember in which thread(s) this has been posted).

I saw Madeon in Toronto a while ago, and his live set is pretty good, but short. He played for around an hour and that was it. To be expected I guess, since he doesn't have a ton of his own material to play. His sound got cut off twice (At least one of the times was due to some idiot rushing at the stage) but other than that it was a great show. Also he looks like he's 12. It was really weird seeing someone so young up there.

I got an incredible "this-changes-everything" offer last night from two international techno producers who want to start a local brand and build the scene by bringing in some major names. They want to work directly with me and a friend of mine to build something new. I'm so incredibly excited, we already have a good outline for the next 3 months and we want to bring our first major act over by February. I've been looking for like-minded people and bouncing ideas off people for over a year now. All the little gigs and the endless networking has paid off, and anybody who tells you hard work in this industry doesn't pay off is an idiot. And whoever said that if you want a healthy scene create it yourself, is 100% right.
