Finally picked up Squire of Gothos' We Do Scorpion Things and holy poo poo if Emptyin Full Clips isn't a loving amazing track.

Also the Phatworld remix of Submerse's Otaku of the Dead is too much stupid fun.

With Wrong Music not having so much of a presence down here anymore, it's up to Mutant Bass and Off Me Nut to keep me entertained.

So I'm taking up the "build a scene" flag again, after being asked to do a "future bass" event by a club I really respect, but in a new micro-club venue that they are doing bookings for. 50 person capacity but good sound, a good bar, and there will be a new DJ booth; the club that booked me has my favorite booth to play in, so I'm excited to see how this turns out. They want to focus on "an alliance to build electronic acts and foster their development".

I'll have a new mix or two up to promote the night, will be sure to post. It's my two sets from opening & closing for Switch this past Saturday night.

Thanks! Hopefully I don't burn myself out trying to do everything with the events myself, which I have done in the past. The space is good for this sort of project, and if it builds a following, the larger club will become an option for any headliner nights.

Rinse 17 came out Monday, been listening to it ever since. It's been a big week for Butterz between this and making fact's top 10 best labels of 2011.

It's great stuff, I've heard plenty of the tunes and they still sound fresh. Mixing is a bit choppy but that's the nature of grime. Hope everyone picks this one up.

Also the new Kingdom and MikeQ dropped this week. Enjoying those as well.

Are these physical dubplates or are you just calling them dubplates because the tunes are being shared exclusively?

Odds are: digital. It's probably better to use the word "promo," which I see most of the DJs refer to them as on twitter.

Just digital tunes in my case, however I do know of someone in Tennessee that presses actual dubplates for a really reasonable price(I wish he didn't move away from Louisana though). It's def. very do-able but it's kinda hard to justify spending the same amount of money that you would get playing a successful gig on just a single pressing of a single tune.

If I played out on vinyl more often I would be more inclined to get my/my friends stuff properly pressed. However, the scene seems to be moving extremely quickly(or maybe that's just my perception of it) and who knows how much "shelf life" I will really get out of a tune before I "retire" it. Also I hear people refer to unreleased digital tunes as "dubs" all the time, correct or not.

So I only remembered this as during the latest Addict clothing email sendout they had a promo for a mix Mark Hill did for them. It's a nice mix, definitely avoid it though if you can't handle some silk and bounce.

Now Mark Hill for those with short memories was one half of Artful Dodger, and did things like produce Craig David, and well produce Craig David (okay and some singles of their own as well, oh so 90s video alert). Sold a bundle, made a bundle, disappeared and I've not had a clue what he's been doing for the past 10 years.

But now he's back under the alias Artful (see what he did there?) and a couple of months ago released a new single, with an LP on the way. I heard it when it came out and to be honest not exactly setting the world on fire which is probably why I totally dinghied it. Very poppy, and to be honest maybe just a wee bit too slick for it's own good, all a bit la-dee-da, but hey why don't you decide for yourself, one for the Popheads- It Could Just Be The Bassline.

Words by Ed Sheeran apparently, and I did like that single he did, the soppy one with the hooker in the video, and was never off Clyde 1.

Definitely not a dancefloor smasher, lacks a good bite and desperately, desperately needs a good couple of remixes. Apparently a promo CDr is out, with a decent sounding Dreem Teem remix but needs some more hands in there to jazz it up. Basically what I'm saying, stick to the Addict mix as it's pretty good and bassy. Anything that has Phil Asher's remix of Peven Everett's Stuck in it deserves some love.

Between the grime rhythm, detuned square bass and the "grindin" drum sample, this is a winner.

This absolutely needs some remixes. I'm on my laptop at the moment, but I can tell even without heavy bass speakers it's a bit of a snoozer.

Not even that much bass in it. A nice bassline, but nowhere near as deep as it could be. Blame it on the fact it's the video mix. Totally a bit of a snoozer but it's got some potential, though too late now given it's a couple months on, that's where recording for a label - even a small one - can be a good thing, more ideas to bring into the mix. Or you could just use the classic default remixes of one MJ Cole mix and one Phil Asher/Restless Soul mix. Still I guess that's what happens when you've been out of contact with the scene for the best part of a decade, living in your multi-platinum album funded mansion.

Artful Dodger always gets some props from me though, especially when I read an interview during their glory days that a lot of their original stuff was made using Akai S01 samplers and GM sounds. And I wouldn't be surprised if there was probably a Quadraverb in there as well to round off the cheapness. Shows what you can do though.

You guys might want to check the Resident Advisor site, it's got an Events page you can search by area/city. You'll get everything that's on up though which could be a blessing or a curse.

If you're in the UK you can check out whatever's been on in the last week on the iPlayer. Otherwise it's a case of :filez: really, copywrite issues and what not. It's why the BBC don't keep them up for long. There used to be a website that hosted them all, but I think it was pulled a good while ago.

Great tracklist. As far as the mixing goes, the beat matches are mostly pretty tight and you're bringing the tunes in confidently which is important for music like this. You might want to try switching up the style of transition that you're doing though. I'd be able to give more specific advice in that department if I knew what equipment you were using.

Don't be afraid to mash the cue button, grab the platters, and slap the faders around a bit. You have the blending figured out but this style of music could use some quick cuts and spinbacks too. Moves that seem cheesy in most house and techno sets are totally appropriate in this context.
