Haha, yeah, that particular one does look a bit like 1970's furniture or perhaps wood paneling, now that you mention it. I think the sunburst just makes the wood even more noticeable. They've got a translucent red (with the grain visible) that looks less like it came from Charles Bronson's den. Mainly, I just love guitars with big ol' fuckin' P90 soapbars. See also: HollisBrown's Malden he posted a few posts up.

I'd imagine the wood is probably less uniformly terrible and more hit or miss and that that's where the low cost comes in. I've seen (and played) a Marauder in store, so I figure it's only a matter of time before the Jag shows up. If it does, and when I inevitably blow through more of my disposable income on it, I will be sure to post a trip report in this very thread!

I have heard of the Pro-Tone series and I think I've seen one or two pop up on Craigslist, but being that they were just Strats, I wasn't too interested at the time. All the more proof that Squier makes very playable stuff in addition to total beginner stuff.

What I'd REALLY love to find is a Squier Super-Sonic on Craigslist or in some pawn shop or something somewhere (I don't do eBay). Godddd I love reverse headstocks.

I've yet to see a Classic Vibe Telecaster Custom with a terrible looking body so it's possible that the stock image for the Modern Player Jag just happened to be the worst of the bunch. The Chinese have upped their game considerably. I owned a Classic Vibe 60's P-Bass and it was just as good as my MIJ Precision Bass that cost me twice as much. It was sickening. I've seen the translucent red Jaguar and it's alright but I like burst and solid finishes on Fenders. Translucent finishes rub me like those coffee table guitars do. Speaking of which, I wish Fender would do more sparkle finishes.

A Super-Sonic? You must post on offsetguitars. And yeah, P-90s are tighter than a bear trap. I loving love my Casino. I really don't like humbuckers much, either but I'm hella in love with the look of Les Pauls. The really flamey types I like are well above two grand though and that's ridiculous for a guitar that can't take a gentle fall without the headstock breaking. I'd rather stick with Fenders. Worked for Townshend, y'know?

Oh, and no! The Pro-Tone series had two Teles in it, a Thinline model in translucent cherry and a Telecaster in natural with a humbucker in the neck. Stratocasters are nice. I've wanted to get the sunburst Pro-Tone with the ash body on the right in the photo below. Unfortunately I always, ALWAYS knock into the selector switch on the drat things because I swing my arm all over the place like Lou Barlow when I play (terribly[i'm primarily a bassist])

You can't tell by the picture, but this thing is 100%, absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt home made. It looks like someone whittled it. The bridge is weird, the pickups are weird. There're two switches (I'm guessing on/off for both pickups) instead of a standard Tele switch. I just don't even know what the gently caress is going on with it.

How does it play? $150 for a handmade instrument is a steal if it plays decently.

I dunno! I didn't have time to check it out when I was in last, since they were about to close.

I'll go in the next few days and check it out. Totally worth 150 if it plays well and sounds interesting, I agree. And as much as I'm not really into Tele's, this one did have a certain vibe about it. I think the homemade factor kinda trumps how ubiquitous Tele's are. I mean, Tele's are super common, but this one is literally one of a kind.

Guitar Center is just weird about prices. 150 is way lowball for a homemade instrument that plays well. But then you'll see Agiles and SX's from Rondo Music in there that someone has sold/traded for credit, and they'll be 100 bucks higher than they are brand new from Rondo.

Heck, I have a Roland JC-120 that I got used from Guitar Center. Absolutely no problems, in gorgeous condition, etc. Cost me 350 bucks, and they go for twice that every day of the week on eBay.

You're half right. It WAS made by hand, only in a factory and not someone's home. Judging by the truss rod access hole, Gibson-esque nut, weird three-saddle bridge style after the lipless Bigsby replacements and covered bridge pickup I'm 99.9% sure that's an old Japanese copy from the late 60's. Fuji-Gen sold them under a variety of different names -- Ibanez, Greco, Carlo Robelli, Columbus, Toredo, Kingston (Teisco), Orlando, Aria and even sometimes with no name at all. They were often purchased by large regional mom & pop stores (back when such a thing existed) to be sold as an in-house brand which is why there are so many different names these were sold under.

I may be wrong (!!!) but some of the earlier Telecaster copies had matching pickups e.g. the three screw configuration of the bridge pickup was found on the neck pickup too. So in the case of the exposed pole pieces on that thinline copy it may very well be an aftermarket pickup...or somebody simply took the cover off. Haha! Hard to say.

Would it be worth 150? It's cheap, yeah but I don't know if it's worth ANY money. Play it and find out! :)

edit:

to add some actual content faithful to the thread...

A few months ago I went to the LA Amp Show. It was pretty cool! The highlight of the day was when at one point I ended up in a room alone with Phil X of Fretted Americana fame. I took advantage of this by pretending to not know who he was. I could tell it made him a little sad. I didn't give Dweezil Zappa the same treatment earlier that day but I digress! When I paid at the door I also went out of the way to fill out an entry for the raffle only to end up almost missing the drawing later that day! I got there just as they were pulling the grand prize. Thank goodness the cute and super friendly girls working at the ticket counter practically yelled out to me from across the hotel lobby to remind me that they had started the drawing. Long story short, I won this.

Egnater Tweaker 40

I love it! One of the guitarists I play with uses an Egnater Rebel 20 so I already had an appreciation for all their nifty little features Egnaters have. This amp covers a lot of tones. My only complaints are that the two channels share the EQ section and it lacks reverb. Whatever, right? Luckily Egnater's cabs are very reasonably priced. I got the matching Tweaker cab from my local Guitar Center like a week later for under 300 dollars.

As for purchases -- I normally play through an Ampeg SVT Classic/4x10HLF stack which I keep at one of my band's lockout. While this lockout is kinda on the way to another band's prac space I'd rather not have to haul that drat thing around several times a week.

Enter the Ampeg B200R!

I was all set to purchase a B100R for 250 through Guitar Center's used site but their drat inventory is updated so infrequently that it was gone by the time I whipped out my card. I must have built up some good karma though because later that day the B100R's 220 watt, tweeter packing, DI capable, preamp tube equipped bigger brother turned up at a GC in Syracuse for 300 dollars!!! How could I say no? I'm pretty stoked because I haven't owned a bass combo of any sort in at least five years.

Finally, I bought this last month.

1968 Gibson J-50

It's a bit of a dog as far as playability and its seen a lot of use (original strip tuners gave way to Grovers which were then switched out for nasty offset-screw Schallers, repaired neck fracture, spider-webbing all over, overspray, repaired crack straight down the back) but it's old wood and I got it ridiculously cheap. It sounds pretty good so I'm hoping with some work it'll be a good go-to for when I fancy looking like a little boy with daddy's guitar.

And she played so nice. Thank you House of Guitars for taking my money.

To add to it, I tried out a few basses today. On my way to The H.O.G. I stopped at Guitar Center to try out an Acoustic micro stack I had seen online to hear how it played. Playing an American Standard Jazz Bass through it sounded nice at low volumes, but if you hit the strings hard or turned the volume up past 4, it sounded really flubby. The bass played nicely, and I tried out the SVT Classic they had through a 6x10 cab. That sounded amazing. Then at the HOG, I tried out Mexican Road-worn relic'd, American Special, and American deluxe J Basses through a SWR redhead hybrid 2x10 combo. The deluxe was perfectly setup right off the shelf (and had just come in with the shipment yesterday). It barely needed to be tuned, and it sounded so warm and smooth. The whole thing played head and shoulders above anything else I played today. I instantly fell in love with it, which is bad news for my wallet. The range of sounds achievable with the bass is amazing too. It ranged from deep, warm and smooth to sharp, punchy mids. It switches between active and passive pickups, and sounded great with either setting.

I just ordered a bunch of poo poo, so of course, here I am to tell you all about it!

So, I just got a Fender MIM strat from a friend. He got it from Craigslist. The guitar is in pretty rough condition and it turns out he just didn't have the time (or money) to invest into it.

Specifically, the body is hosed. Whoever had it before tried to convert a Strat that had 3 single coils routes into an HH strat. I don't know what the gently caress happened, but it looks like they took a chainsaw to the body to route out cavities for the humbuckers. I mean, oh my god, the pickguard doesn't even totally cover the routing anymore. :gonk:

So yeah, it needs a new body. Also, the electronics are... weird. Dude had ripped them all out and installed, in the holes where volume/tone knobs would go, two on/off switches (one for each humbucker he hamfistedly installed) and a kill switch. So, it needs all new electronics. And a new pickguard. And the pickups aren't really that great. It's basically a neck, tuners and a bridge at this point. :/

So, I ordered a Daphne Blue strat body from Guitar Fetish, new electronics (3 way switch for the pickups, 500k pots, gently caress it a new input jack, too) a tortoise shell pickguard and back panel (for the tremolo cavity), Orange Drop tone caps and, while I was at it, a bass tuner to replace the hosed up tuner on my Jaguar bass.

Then, I hit up eBay and bought a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates (for the neck), an Invader (for the bridge), a Hot Rails (to replace my Mustang's hosed up bridge pickup), a new tremolo unit and tremolo arm for my Mustang and finally, because I've wanted to mess around with one for a while, a Buzz Stop for my MIJ Jazzmaster.

Long story short, in < a week's time, I will be the proud owner of a much improved Mustang and the "proud" owner of a Strat that will look like Rivers Cuomo's circa The Blue Album (which is fine by me. Early Weezer owned and TBA was the first album I ever bought). I will edit some pictures into this post when they arrive, which should be on Monday.

NO. BAD.

Buy a Mustang bridge and use .11 gauge strings or file the notches in the saddles ever so slightly if you don't want to play heavier strings. The Buzz Stop addresses an issue that can be fixed with patience.

Also, what Blue Album song do you plan to play first upon completing your guitar? This is important.

See, I considered doing that, but then I realized that a Mustang bridge would be about as much as a Buzz Stop. And I'd lose the ability to raise/lower individual strings. And I don't really hate the concept of being able to set my string width (I have tiny, girl hands and like them a bit closer) making me probably the only person on earth who doesn't hate the design abortion that is the Fender Jazzmaster/Jaguar saddle. I just wish there was more downward pressure on said saddles to make the strings stay put while I am playing awesome fuzzed out noise fests. And the Buzz Stop does that!

My first session with the strat is going to go: the intro to My Name is Jonas several times followed Surf Wax America followed by In the Garage followed by the solo and some of the noodley poo poo to Say It Ain't So followed by "gently caress it, might as well play some Pinkerton" followed by most of that album followed by Friends of P. by the Rentals followed by me curled into the fetal position sobbing while Rock n' Roll Pt. 3 by Ozma plays in the background.

Pretty much the same thing that happens every time I listen to Weezer!

Pretentious Turtle posted:

It was cheap. :(

Well, really, they all were. The Hot Rails was 30 bucks and the other two were 40ish (all used, of course). Considering that any one of them goes for 79.99 mew at Guitar Center, I'd say it was a good haul.

This will actually be the 3rd Invader equipped monstrosity I've owned. First one was in an Electra from the 70's. The guitar itself was some horrible vaguely SG-ish clone with build in effects that could be swapped in and out (they kind of looked like old school Atari game cartridges). Anywho, someone had slapped an Invader in it, and between that, the awful guitar or the crap-rear end effects, the pickup was honestly the best thing about the guitar.

Then, a couple years later, I had a Fender Cyclone that also had an Invader installed.

I'm not a huge humbucker fan as a rule, so when I do have something with 'buckers in it, I'm probably only going to use it on distorted stuff. The Invader sounds like dogshit clean, so it doesn't really matter.

Well, what I'm going to do is first install the neck (since the neck holes are predrilled, that will be easy). Then, install the pickguard, since it has a cutout for the heel of the neck, that will make aligning it easy: simply fit it on so that the neck is in the pickguard's neck cutout and screw it in.

Then, by further process of elimination, the bridge will fit into the part of the pickguard cut out to accommodate the bridge. Simply fit it into the cutout and screw it down.

The only "hard" thing that I won't be able to just rely on poo poo fitting together how it should will be the anchors for the tremolo but even then, I can't imagine that'll be too hard.

It'll take me several hours to get it totally up and running, but it should be a fun weekend project.

You might have to fill and re-drill the holes. The neck mounting holes on aftermarket bodies aren't usually correctly spaced for official Fender necks.

Plus, I've bought stuff from Guitar Fetish before - bridges and the like - and they were all drop in compatible, too. I'm hoping the neck will be.

Be wary of wording like that, it just means the neck physically fits and you wont have to alter the neck pocket itself. I've helped put together a guitar with a GFS body before and the neck mounting holes were slanted relative to the centerline of the body. You can see an example of it here, but don't let it deter you if you get one like that. It's a dead simple fix.

(Please note: I'm not trying to say that your body will have this issue, or not to use GFS for bodies, it's just something to look out for.)

I just wish there was more downward pressure on said saddles to make the strings stay put while I am playing awesome fuzzed out noise fests. And the Buzz Stop does that!

That sounds reasonable. If I had a Jazzmaster I'd just ape the gently caress out of Nels Cline (or Sonic Youth if you insist on giving credit where its due) and make liberal use of the empty space between the bridge and the tremolo plate to get lots of gross sounds.

You'll probably still need to file the stock Jazzmaster saddles though! I imagine the increased tension behind the bridge would make the strings even MORE likely to fall out of their saddles.

Um, whoah. Plz be my friend.

Never a greater duo
As long as we are posting hella Fenders, I forgot to post when this got done:

MIM Thinline 69 with a fancy new baritone Warmoth neck and custom color Sperzels and knobs. It's got Bareknuckle Pickups, pots, and caps, too, tuned to F# C# A D# F# B.

The 28.625" scale was easier to get used to than I expected, and it feels great. The stock pots were 1 meg, and I replaced them with 250ks, so it sounds much more balanced now. Between that and the added tension it sounds WAY more acoustic than it ever did before, in addition to, predictably, tighter. The old neck's tiny frets were more vintage nonsense that I replaced with playable extra jumbo frets to eliminate a mile of action. Now the tuning pegs can actually hold a note overnight as well, although the string-holding mechanisms of the Sperzels have some mechanical/possibly QC issues. (I wouldn't go with them again if I could get my colors from someone else, but they do stay once they're locked.)

Before it was working, and now it's loving fantastic. All my problems are solved and more.

P.S. If you're in the Ann Arbor area, the new tech at Herb David (Dave) does excellent work and is very nice.

Best Buy has all their Danelectro pedals for $4.99-9.99 each so I went on down and picked up a few. Some were display models, some not.

I've owned a couple danelectro pedals that were reall good, or at least, comparable to the BOSS equivilents. The equalizer, univibe and trem to be exact.

It was this vid that turned me around.

That's not what gaslighting means you hyperbolic dipshit.
^^^ Just in case anybody is wondering, that video does show the differences in those pedals, but the guy making it has no idea how to use what he's got. The rate controls on both those pedals are turned up way too high. A vibe pedal is supposed to be relaxing and mellow. The change over time should be subtle and smooth. You shouldn't hear a constant NYAW-NYAW-NYAW-NYAW as you play.

A quick rate on the vibe like that seriously makes me feel nauseous. It's a very weird sound.

You say you want a revolution
I have the vibe and trem from those series. Both sound great. I gave away the trem after I got my Keeley TR-2 but I'll definitely keep the vibe around even though I rarely need that effect, in case I go through a Hendrix phase.

The bypass on these effects sucks, though, that's a stone cold fact.

I got a bunch of Dan Electro pedals (Vibrato, Tremolo, EQ, Octave and Tuner). All of them except the Octave are awesome. The Octave, sadly, just doesn't track notes very well; even single notes played slowly. It still sounds like the pedal is struggling to keep up. Ughhh.

I also bought some Graphtech compensated saddles for my Duo-Sonic. The difference is night and day. It was borderline impossible to intonate it before, but now it's basically perfect. Also, the tone is a lot better.

Finally, I got a chance to play that weird Tele I posted about a few posts back. It played great and sounded fantastic. The toggle switches are actually a 3-way selector and a phase switch, which was pretty awesome. I liked the feel of the neck, too. Hella chunky. Also, the neck pickup was a Tele bridge pickup, complete with 3 hole pattern that the previous owner had modded the pickguard to accommodate.

Why didn't I get it? Well, because it doesn't have a truss rod. Oh, sure, it has a hole for a truss rod, it has a shaft burrowed down through the neck where one should go, but it's totally empty. I don't even know what the gently caress. It's like someone removed the trussrod for some ungodly reason (is that even possible?) or the neck was some weird factory reject that didn't have one or something.

Combine that with the fact that the neck could've used a slight truss rod adjustment as is, which means it's only going to get worse over time, I had to pass.
