jamal posted:yeah, without a roll bar. Given how absolute poo poo many of the cage designs are in the USA, that's not exactly the worst sin I've seen. And lets say you do take the stance that without a cage a person with a harness cant duck in a roll over etc - sorry, wrong idea. If your roof collapses you are A class hosed because with a three point you are thrown about like a rag doll in a roof crushing roll. Even with the latest 6 point harness and FIA regulation seats AND the kind of cage that withstood a 150+ kph roll and pike, my helmet STILL hit the B Pillar and left a dent. If lets say the roof still withstood the impact, my body would have been flung about with even the best three point and I would have had more than a dent on the helmet when it belted the B-Pillar. With a harness sure maybe the roof could be crushed - but it is very much more likely I'll be flung about. Being kept firmly in place is actually a drat good thing and probably a good starting point why he could get out without injury. I'll take harness over supposed ability to duck or whatever in the event of the big one.

real_scud posted:This is why you don't remove limiters on stock cars What's the limit on a V6 Mustang? EDIT: Derp. The description of the video has it. quote:I had an opportunity to drive my Mustang on a closed road at high speeds and this is what happened. Apparently the standard tires are not the only reason for the car being limited to such a sub performance speed of 113MPH. (Even slower then Ford's Fiesta and Focus models = 118MPH) My stock driveshaft failed at about 135MPH, so if these cars are run flat out in the real world without the ridiculous speed governor to keep them together, the drivetrain is not actually designed to handle the power of the engine. Major damage caused by the broken shaft included a hole in the metal floorpan, major exhaust system and muffler damage, broken transmission shifter, broken parking brake, broken interior plastic trim parts, etc. My 1997 Mustang Cobra could run 152MPH for unlimited time periods and this new car only held together for about 15 seconds under full throttle!!! Give me a break!!! The drivetrain is a REALLY BAD place to cut costs for a net profit $, especially on a 305HP Mustang! I really hope that Ford makes a change to the V6 drivetrain for 2013. After all, many of these cars are driven regularly on the German Autobahn and a failure like this could be very dangerous! Solution = Ditch the governor and install a decent driveshaft! Even a 23K Honda Civic can go 137MPH without breaking!!! Come on!!! This is my 5'th Mustang and my 1'st major failure. This is totally unacceptable for a performance car!

Great documentary from 1986 about Cosworth designing a new turbo engine for Formula 1. It's in 3 parts, but part 3 is apparently not available anywhere. Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbB1qwhKaaE Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqfVAGOaGEc Interesting just how dated everything is - from the shoebox-sized ECU, to them hand-carving prototype engines out of wood because CAD was considered too expensive for only "a few hundred F1 engines".

Hah I've seen this before, it's mindblowing comparing this to a modern F1 engine factory. That place looks like my old secondary school. I will forever have respect for hand-drawn & machined parts though, I can't imagine even trying to hand-draw anything more than basic parts. jammyozzy fucked around with this message at 21:50 on Dec 19, 2011 |

I don't know much about cornering or driving but is there anything he did wrong specifically? How would he have done it right/bettter?

To me just looks like he went way too fast into that corner, but I can't tell as it seems like the sound/telemetry/video is all out of sync. It *sounds* like he's accelerating around that corner like he wasn't expecting the chicane but I really can't tell.

The telemetry looks like it's in line with the main view, but the sound is off, really bizarre. Anyway, it looks like he straight up forgot which turn he was coming into as he was going way too fast to make that turn. The dyno room, the analog gauges, and the engineers involved are about the most British scene captured on film since Churchill said they'd never surrender. Also the guy who carved the wood mold is now the man I think of whenever I hear the word "British". That whole video makes up for the Revolution and I'm glad to call that country an ally.
