Can anyone recommend a good Android office suite? My dad is looking to view and manipulate excel files on his tablet and maybe make some quick shorthand notes in either word or some other program.

Could someone please recommend a good file manager, preferably one that allows folders to be hidden? Yes I would like to hide my pictures of topless ladies (wife included). Edit: Basically I want my phone to be open and accessible but have an area that can only be accessed with a password or pattern. Maytag fucked around with this message at 04:52 on Jan 10, 2012 |

Beaver is a goon made app that is a fully functioning web browser that also acts as a file vault. Goon approved, if earlier posts in the thread are to be believed. Free and premium versions exist, unsurprisingly. I think the way it works is you create a password that you enter into the browser url bar, and that takes you to a hidden file/photo/porn gallery.

Quickpic has the option to password protect hidden folders. But it's an all our nothing thing with hidden folders You can either choose to respect or ignore the nomedia file

I find this statement absolutely hilarious because at one point in time (about 6 months ago) I was probated due to this huge slapfight about Poweramp because it wasn't pretty enough for a number of people despite having essentially the same functionality then as it does now. Funny how things change in a few months with a fresh lick of paint, eh? Edit: It was a stupid argument then and it's a stupid argument now. I just found Gyshall's commentary amusing as hell because 6 months ago I could easily see certain people not suggesting poweramp because it didn't measure up to their aesthetic sensibilities, no matter the actual quality of the applications functionality. Cardiovorax posted:How so? It's the best option he has. VFAT has no issues with periods in folder or file names, so it won't break your card. There's no way to "hide" stuff on a file system independently of the used file explorer or OS either, so if you really don't want people looking at your porn don't leave your SD card laying around or go and encrypt the poo poo. In true linux fashion, a dot isn't going to stop file searching, its not like typing 'find -type d -name ".*"' is hard. Also you suggested a file manager that can't view hidden files. So it won't really work out if he wants to view that directory again. And you should never rely on obscurity to protect your data especially on a device thats pretty easy to steal (Not that there's a chance of it.) vkeios fucked around with this message at 06:48 on Jan 10, 2012 |

Yeah I'm not looking to lock things down all crazy, the number of people I'm around who could figure out how to search for hidden files is pretty small. I don't care if some complete stranger thief sees stuff, it's more for a family member or some nosy jerk at work. There's a default app called Gallery that just shows everything on my phone, pics and music and video all together, with thumbnails. Not good.

You could remove the extension of the pictures, then if you click on them in ES File Explorer, it'll ask you if you want to open it as an image/video/audio/document. Downside is you have to open them individually rather than flipping through them, but if you give them obscure system-type names, nobody is going to look at them.

Cojawfee posted:Is there a thread for woofi? If not, is there a way for it to not disconnect wifi if it is currently connected but not in the correct area? My GPS likes to say I'm at the opposite part of base (about 2 km away) even though I'm not. I'd rather not set my radius to three kilometers. It would be nice if when it saw I was at home and connected to wifi, it didn't disconnect later when it thinks I'm 3km away. If I'm away and I'm not on wifi, sure turn wifi off, but if I'm actively connected to it. I'm not sure I understand your problem here. Let me tell you what I did to test and you tell me if I tested the right thing. I set my saved location to about 2 kilometers from my house. While I was at home I connected to WiFi. Woofi thinks I'm 2 kilometers from my saved location. Am I understanding you correctly in my thinking that this mirrors your situation? I explicitly wrote woofi to not do anything while you're connected to WiFi, so in my contrived situation I just described, it does not disconnect me from my access point. Now, it's possible there's a bug in how your device manufacturer reports WiFi state to the Android API. I basically use this logic: code:

With ES File Explorer, create a file inside each folder you want to be hidden called ".nomedia" without the quotes. Gallery will ignore then those folders' very existence forever, but any file browser that can show hidden files can still see it.

While we're on e subject of Woofi, are there any issues with the app and ICS? When I leave a saved location it will turn off wifi just fine, but for some reason when I return to a location it won't turn it back on. I've tried playing around with the travel time and connectivity check settings but nothing has helped.

What does the notification say when you return to your location? edit: During the development of woofi, I've come to the conclusion that carriers are absolutely horrible at location services on their phones. Verizon seems to be especially bad. They seem to do something with the Android location API with regards to tower-based location fixes that just makes it Not Work in large swaths of the country.

It is a web browser, but it also handles image hiding and stuff. When you open it up it just looks like a browser, but one without bookmarks or history or anything like that. Once you enter your password into the url field it makes visible your bookmarks and an image gallery. Other than the suggestive name, no one opening it would think anything about it unless they knew what it was already. Using Beaver for your "sensitive" web browsing also means that if friends/family/co-workers are using your phone they won't stumble on your old browsing history. I used it for a few weeks and then bought the paid version.

Like I think other people have mentioned in the thread, I get that the name is a good hurr-hurr (for about five seconds) but dammit, I wish the paid version had a different name. The scenario is always "Hey what's this, Beaver Browser? What is this, for porn?" "Uh... n-n-no! No! For, uh, normal internet!" Which is more awkward since I don't care who sees my porn (Android User Manual, a classic), I got it for the websites I like to leave logged in, like SA and ITS.

I had that exact conversation with my wife who doesn't even care if I check out porn. It's just a point of pride not getting caught, that's the whole point of the browser anyway right?

It's more like I was sad to have exactly that conversation with each member of my wife's family over Christmas while they used my tablet to play video games on. Then the same thing over New Years with a bunch of old friends. It's a fun cliche conversation with the wife, but really awkward with her 16-year-old youngest brother. e: Clarification, porn didn't go along for the holidays. \/\/\/\/ Didn't realize I could do that with shortcuts. Should have been obvious, really. Never used shortcuts because FolderOrganizer's awesome. Splizwarf fucked around with this message at 21:00 on Jan 10, 2012 |
