 Hi, it's 2012 and it's time for a new indie music megathread  ! Post all ya favorite artists from rock, pop, twee, folk, electronic, you know the deal. Punk infused rock like PUJOL, Ty Segall, and Jeff The Brotherhood are always good too. "Chillwave" and whatever the hell you call Grimes/d'Eon's split 'Darkbloom' has been growing on me as of late. It's also cool hearing Neon Indian's Polish Girl play on the radio sometimes. Upcoming albums!  The XX just released a pretty rough demo of a song called 'Open Eyes'. Sounds okay, typical XX style. Also it'd be cool if some goons could point me to a steady place to find new music or rising artists. As of now I just scrounge around on iTunes, Spotify, some Tumblr blogs, and the occasional visits to Pitchfork.

BIRP. 120 songs each month, usually sent to this guy by publishers and the musicians themselves of rising artists. It's great to download and mix in with playlists of other music or just run in the background and wait to see what grabs you. Probably my best find from BIRP has been Low Roar, an indie-folk act from Iceland that brings me back to when I was younger and listening to Sigur Ros still had that "wow" factor. This song is excellent.

If someone hasn't heard of them yet, then give Slow Club a listen. They are a Sheffield, UK based indie pop/rock act that have some really fantastic lyrics and some great catchy songs. They released a couple of upbeat EPs before their first album, Yeah So, which are worth a listen but I really think that they came into their own with Yeah So, every single track is great. The tone is a bit more depressing I guess, since every song seems to be about breakup in someway, but a lot of them are very childishly optimistic and wistful about the whole situation. 3 tracks that I think are particularly fun are It Doesn't have to be beautiful which has some great lyrics especially in the opening verse, Our Most Brilliant Friends which at first i didn't like but not can't help but shout along too, and Giving up on Love which is maybe the most famous song from the album but inexplicably got sped up in the official video which makes it sound stupid, but is a fun catchy track. Their second album, Paradise, I haven't enjoyed as much so far but there are still some great tracks. The band have stopped their joint vocals mostly and have focused on the, admittedly technically better, vocals of the female lead. This gives the songs a bit more of a crisp, clean feel but I feel they are a bit too perfect, whereas the clash of the less controlled male vocals and perfectly controlled female vocals in the first album created a really honest and interesting sound in my opinion. The lyrics of their songs are also a lot more abstract in this album and less obviously focused on a specific issue, as in the first album. This makes them a bit more accessible maybe but again I sort of preferred the focus of the first album. Nevertheless, Two Cousins is exceptionally catchy and I could listen to on repeat for hours on end, and If We're Still Alive which returns to the joint vocals of the first album is also a great track and has some really fun lyrics. What I'm trying to get across is, give them a listen, because I really like them and I want them to get more recognition so I can say I knew about them before they were famous

Besides the usual I like listening to the indie rock playlist for new music, there can be a lot of terrible poo poo in there (The Killers and Pomplamoose last month ugh) but you occasionally get gems. http://theindierockplaylist.com/ Haven't listened to the new one yet but from a quick look I can recommend Priory, Grouplove, Mother Falcon, The Black Keys, Dum Dum Girls, Destroyer, Florence (though I would be surprised if anyone here doesn't know her or The Black Keys), Los Campesinos!, The Vaccines (somewhat, depends a lot on the song) and Rabbit (if you like twee)

Hey, OP! I'm liking a lot of the bands mentioned in your post. For harder edged stuff, the whole garage rock revival thing from San Fransisco heroes like Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin is really working for me. (And Bass Drum of Death, which you mentioned.) If you have a chance, catch Ty and Mikal on tour together. In addition to assaulting your ears with their guitar-driven weirdness, they are also friendly and approachable to boot. For indie experimental, one of my favorite shows last year was Tuneyards, who were touring with a fun duo called Buke & Gass. B&G is a boy/girl duo who are writing very eccentric songs and making a ton of noise with their homemade instruments. Tuneyards is a girl and her loop station, backed by a bassist and two saxophones. Sounds strange; but was a powerful show. The crowd couldn't get enough and barely let her leave. Wavves and Best Coast tour together, or at least they did last year, and are worth seeing if you get the opportunity. Looking forward to seeing Tennis in February as a change of pace. Their last album grew on me to be a work favorite (Best Coast's too).

Sort of a 90s MBV guitar squall going on in a lot of their songs which I loving love, if they tour through my neck of the woods I'm going. Ana Calvi: Excellent singer and guitarist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKVy0EVu2ZI This woman has a very, very powerful voice. Sort of the antithesis of many soft, whispered vocals in alot of indie rock bands, this girl loving belts it out. And she is a superb guitarist. And I don't know if Cold Cave counts as indie anymore, since alot of people probably know about them by now. For twee basically read this pitchfork http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/6176-twee-as-gently caress/ ,look up every band that you like and get those for a quick starter of the essentials of older twee. If you're done with that twee is actually having somewhat of a mini-revival now (or maybe it never went away? I don't know but there is a huge gap in my album years) but check Los Campesinos! (a bit punk inspired Twee, still owns a lot), Architecture in Helsinki (Electronic Twee-ish stuff, still very cutesy), I'm From Barcelona (they can get a bit overly on the childish aspect though), My Little Airport (Chinese Twee), My Little Pony (Awful name (and not related to the show), I know but they share a lot of indie pop sensibilities with twee), Rabbit! (very, very sugar sweet indie pop). For Dream pop check Asobi Seksu, Beach House and E for Explosion also look into Chillwave, because in my experience a lot of chillwave stuff sounds very close to Dream Pop. Folk Talk: I have been digging Of Monsters And Men a lot lately http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86tDEuoOSko and also getting back into older Okkervil River stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EMLbKNcKww Will Shef totally killed someone though, the guy has a lot of songs from the viewpoint of a murderer and the like.

I love Joy Formidable! They have this really awesome hardcore edge to them especially at the breakdown at the end of Whirring. It puzzled the poo poo out of me cause they sound so similar to Metric I wasn't expecting it to take that turn. Whoever mentioned Los Campesinos!, thank you. I just got a couple of their albums, and they're fantastic. I'll spit in one of my own in return, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. You've almost certainly heard one of their songs before, between a beer commercial (Golden Age) and an iPod commercial (Around the Bend), but it's really happy poppy music, and their new single, Heart Attack is their best yet, IMO.

Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) is starting his own label--I think it's actually a division of Jagjaguwar--and the first thing he's releasing is the album "It's All Aquatic" by Amateur Love. They're pretty much really great, and I have a feeling this is going to be a great label to watch in the future. Definitely check them out, if you're down with great electro-pop poo poo: Grooveshark

Just came across this band in NPR's World Cafe Next 20 from last October. TV Girl comes out of San Diego, they'd fall into that indie pop/chillwave genre. They don't anything too special that stands out from their peers.. but it's pretty cool pop. So is "Tallahassee". He's released a prolific amount of material, so picking favorite songs/albums can be tough. They're also amazing live - John Darnielle has great crowd interaction, plus you can learn little vignettes about his songs. One of the guys from Of Montreal and Jupiter One started his own side project recently (past year?). He's going by Kishi Bashi and just recently signed to Joyful Noise Records. It's sort of an electro-synth-pop with a Japanese twist (at least I think his family is from Japan, though he was born in the US). He currently has an EP out that was supported through Kickstarter and has a full length album coming sometime this year. It All Began With A Burst is from his upcoming album and I think it's pretty great. Her album Viscera is a stunning and progressive folk-pop album. Hval is of Rockettothesky as well, which I don't care for as much but might tickle someone's fancy. Sufjan Stevens. He's in the process of recording his next studio album. After his experimental The Age Of Adz, I'm curious what he's doing now. Is he head backing to his indie folk roots or experimenting further? I didn't hate Age Of Adz, but I can't say it was an excellent album. Some songs, his voice is overwhelmed by the loud electronic roar. And that final song "Impossible Soul" is just a bore. That being said, I hope he continues to experiment. If he heads back to his indie folk roots, he risks being samey and damaging interest in him.

Shearwater's new album is now streaming on NPR. Their past three albums have been very folky, with the occasional more straightforward rock or pop song. On a quick listen this album is much more of the latter, but their quite unique sound and lyrics still remain. I'm enjoying it a lot as a big fan of all their previous work.

I built a repository to put youtube links so that they can be organized by tags and streamed in continuous play like a radio. Its built with Ruby on Rails/MongoDB. I like the taste of the music of this thread and need testers. It is invite only and I give out zero invites to each new user so it is not going to grow exponentially. They sounded phenomenal and all of the songs from the second record translated really well live. That being said, Chris seems to have no stage presence (that, or he doesn't try to) and they kind of all just diminutively sit there and play the songs. It was also in a theater, which I don't like as a venue at all. It was a great sounding show but don't except any energy, as you pointed out.
