Dominic White posted:To clarify and expand on that a bit, politicians in Japan have been beating the 'Media is corrupting our nation!' drum for quite some time now, and between self-censorship and legal restrictions, you see a lot less gore coming out of Japanese games now compared to even the PS2 era. It's pretty sad. Huh, I didn't know that. I am completely ignorant when it comes to the Japanese side of gaming though. It seems completely alien to me seeing as they have all the weird anime schoolgirl tentacle rape, or whatever that you read about on these forums. You'd think they wouldn't give a drat about gunshot wounds and stuff. Then again it took Australia bloody ages to give violent games an actual rating instead of banning them outright. Common sense will come through one day I hope.

We just need a proper, regularly-updated SAGCCX torrent. It needs to be public, too - a lot of non-goons get their fix from here.

People seem to have the impression that those are sold out in the open next to the average Studio Ghibli or Dragon Quest game or whatever in megastores, but they're generally just about as obscure and niche as porn in every other country. In the grand scheme of things I don't think Japanese politicians care about those, they're aiming for much more "mainstream" targets.

Wendell posted:There's a few people that have been uploading them to youtube, so I've just been watching there. A couple things about this surprise me actually. Back when TV-Nihon's subs were the only way you could watch GCCX in English, it was danged near impossible to find GCCX on video streaming sites. I think on Youtube, I came across a TV-Nihon one once -- which got taken down right away -- then I found the Ghosts 'n' Goblins and 53 Stations raws, which I subbed through Overstream, but those quickly went down too. I used to grab my episodes from Veoh but that account went away eventually. But now I see our subs everywhere on Youtube and there are a few sites like GamingCX that play them streaming. I think it's great that people have such easy access to the shows now and thus feeding the English fandom, but why aren't these dropping like flies?

Maybe after the success of the USA debut and Kotaku dropping the license, they decided to let them stay up so people are aware of the show until they can manage proper overseas distribution?

Well, they were rare before so if a single one got popular it was easily noticed and shut down, now you have small sites, uploaders on youtube, big sites and etc everywhere with GCCX content, it becomes much more time consuming, and harder, to find all these and shut them down, I think. That's my guess anyhow. Or something along the lines of what Bocc Kob said.

It's probably just a matter of time, at least in the case of YouTube. Even way, way back when GCCX stuff was first on there, it was a little while before Fuji took a machete to all of it.

Bayfiles seems like it might be a good alternative for direct downloads, except that it can apparently take longer to upload than people are used to. Deposit Files is another popular choice right now. Both allow files several gigabytes in size. The question, of course, is how long they'd stay up. Neither site seems to be on any sort of deleting spree, but I do know that Deposit Files removes files after 30 days (90 if you're a registered member) of not being downloaded by anyone. Not sure if Bayfiles has a similar policy or not.

It's a shame about the whole Youtube thing. The old SAGCCX Youtube channel was how I got hooked on the show as it was so easily accessible. I don't mind other people posting it on other sites or hosting it on Youtube, but it does bother me when it looks like they are taking credit for your work (this happened a few times on other forums, as found on the previous thread) or when there's no deliberate effort to show that this was a fansub done by SA (that GCenter site). You guys put a lot work into these, so it's a bit irksome to see these things happen. I think one of the reasons people also take advantage of this is due to the subtly that the SA team references itself only once at the end of the episode. Someone explained that this is a sign of a good translation team to be non-intrusive. You should release an episode with a giant loving obnoxious watermark.

There always is an option for a #SAGCCX channel on IRC to share new subs

I've always wondered about this for fansub stuff. I don't know any details of the legalities involved, but if the lawyers ever got riled up, wouldn't the first place they go after be the people dropping "brought to you by us! Only go to this website if you want to see this show!" splashes all over the place?

I noticed that forum goon Heran Bago posted a translation of the Mario Kart VC challenge in the old thread back in August and it seemed to fly under the radar in a big way. The subs are built into YouTube, I was just wondering if there are plans to encode them and release it? Also, I noticed there is no link to said youtube video in the OP. The post in question.

So every time Arino inserts a game into the system, he does this weird hand gesture after turning it on. It looks like he's pushing a button on his shirt or something. Is there a meaning behind this, or is this some standard Power Rangers-like gesture that's common in Japan?

Yes, it is a common thing to make Power Ranger gestures when playing video games in Japan.
