Netflix recommended this one to me: Reel Injun (2009). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1484114/ It's a look at the portrayal of Native Americans / First Peoples in American cinema, and although it's a little uneven there was a whole lot of stuff I didn't know (despite doing a whole course on Native American lit and film back in college.) It's on Netflix streaming and definitely worth checking out.

I've seen some of the worst videos on the internet, as I am sure many of you have as well. Everything from typical goatse and 2 girls 1 cup, beheadings, and all of the rest; HOWEVER, those pedophile videos are actually unwatchable. That clip of the father/6yr old daughter shown in the first video I actually put my hand up to block the screen and turned my head away. I've never had such an adverse reaction to an internet video and this is even censored. I do find the parts with the officers incredibly interesting, and their perspective but god drat those censored clips and images. Naes fucked around with this message at 00:59 on Jan 25, 2012 |

The Untold Tommy Cooper A documentary mostly of interest to UK comedy nerds, although those of you who only know Tommy Cooper as that comedian who literally died onstage during a live TV broadcast might find it interesting to know a bit more about him. It does cover his death in part 5 and includes interviews with his assistant on the night. Flaky posted:Just requoting this from much earlier. I was in tears, because this may very well be my future. Thanks loads! I urge everyone to watch Farming with Nature, and there's another recent film that you can watch right afterwards, which adds some nice perspective: Anima Mundi (2011) discusses the Gaia hypothesis, which proposes to look at the entire planet as a living organism. Speakers are Australian permaculture pope Steve Holmgren, some peak oil folks, and the infamous Michael Ruppert. It's a beautifully shot, compelling film that makes a strong point for a necessary change of mindset that we'll have to make. I haven't found full for streaming, so you'll have to rent or it, but here's a trailer at least: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWzsbljlOHA&feature=watch-now-dialog-button&wide=1

El Goatherd posted:I found the other two episodes of the 2002 BBC series 'The Hunt For Britain's Pedophiles'. Be warned that these episodes feature some heavily censored but still very upsetting images. I haven't watched it yet, but I'm hoping one of the parts is the episode I remember with a particularly obviously mentally-ill bloke who kept saying it was all the kids fault and how the existence of female circumcision makes it alright for him to sexually abuse children or something. That is probably the most heart wrenching documentary I have ever watched. I cannot imagine having to catalog thousands of those photos and videos?

The Century of the Self: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyPzGUsYyKM Wikipedia quote: "The business and political world uses psychological techniques to read, create and fulfill our desires, to make their products or speeches as pleasing as possible to us. Curtis raises the question of the intentions and roots of this fact. Where once the political process was about engaging people's rational, conscious minds, as well as facilitating their needs as a society, the documentary shows how by employing the tactics of psychoanalysis, politicians appeal to irrational, primitive impulses that have little apparent bearing on issues outside of the narrow self-interest of a consumer population."

Garbage Warrior For the last 30 years, architect Michael Reynolds has been making off-the-grid homes that power themselves, catch their own water, heat and cool themselves, process their own waste, and grow their own food... and they are made of other peoples' garbage. http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/garbage-warrior/ Edit: Off the Grid Les Stroud and his family come to the decision to get off the grid. The documentary, shot by Stroud, follows his family's experience while renovating an old farm into an eco-friendly, independent, and self-sustaining home. http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/off-the-grid/ GoldenWeapon fucked around with this message at 01:17 on Jan 30, 2012 |

The ponds are deep enough to not freeze completely, and rocks and sticks that breach the surface allow for gas exchange. Here's a similar film focusing on Holzer's aquaculture, I believe it's explained there: http://vimeo.com/20918655 Rojkir posted:Does anyone know more permaculture docs? See up there ^^^ - here's some more: Bill Mollison - In Grave Danger Of Falling Food http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5iHc3oTgao Mollison originally coined the term permaculture. The film is a bit older and he's hard to understand at times, but it's worth it. And here's a little series about his work around the world Global Gardener http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxJDCy9BjFQ&feature=related An introduction to the topic by MidwestPermaculture (haven't seen it, but it sounds interesting) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGEwhBNf8TQ&list=UUTrTeGI1aFaYBRMiqFWUPaA&index=21&feature=plcp Greening the desert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gPvsl9ni-4 A closely related topic. In regards to climate change and mitigating it, this might be the most important work that can be done in our lifetime. I personally like Holzer's approach best, because his results resemble nature the most, and he's a got a very intuitive way of understanding it all. But any permaculture is better than everything else you can do with land, so it really doesn't matter. Tons of interesting interviews here! It's nice to see this interest in these topics - makes me almost hopeful for the future.

I found it when I was let down by the Off The Grid documentary. Off The Grid is more about getting off the power and water grid than anything else. More importantly the issue I found with it is that in getting off the grid they just paid for a bunch of stuff to make them self sufficient rather than do it themselves. http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/ray-mears-extreme-survival/ Extreme Survival is more like Survivor Man mixed with stories of people who Survived in the selected environments for long periods of time. He shows some basic survival skills in the area while talking about possible situations. All 3 seasons are on youtube - linked above.

I am let down by this doc though, because of the well witcher guy. What the gently caress. Believing something wholy unscientific seems to be a recurring theme with all these off the grid, permaculture, sustainable living 'types'. As much as I love the concepts I can't help but dislike the people.
