Even Adobe has ceded the Flash on mobile argument.

I was booked on a job because I could play flash and change a UA to desktop on location. I went to show a perspective client a reel that's hosted on vimeo. Bringing it up on any mobile device or the vimeo app would serve flash or HTML5 depending on the user's device. Vimeo has a setting that locks out mobile devices from content. I switched over to the tablet browser which could serve the normal site in flash, showed the reel and was able to book the job.

Flash across the web isn't going to disappear quickly and its pretty crazy that some of you think taking away the option of using it is a positive.

I'm happy it worked for you but if it was a technology that could have viably been adapted for mobile long term it would have been. I'm glad that there was a device that could satisfy your use case just like I am glad that the success of iOS hastened the demise of Flash in the long run.

I'm not sure what your point is with this, other then to look super spergy?

I needed to use flash, I had a device it worked on. Someone at some point thought it was viable enough to create that content with flash, other wise it would have been a non issue.

Once they stop using flash, guess what, I'll still be able to access that content, just like I can right now.

My point, and I actually had one, I needed flash and I had something that could do it when I needed. If I didn't I would have lost a job.

It was 7 million sold vs 3 million shipped in 2010. In 2011 it's 15 million sold vs 10 million shipped (and possibly almost all sold considering the Kindle Fire's success). Altogether there are more iPads yes, but Android is catching up - just like it did on phones.

Also flash is not going anywhere for a long time. Adobe is incompetent above all things which, among other things, led them to leaving the mobile space. It also doesn't change the fact that till flash disappears, Android phones and tablets can still run flash.

Err, what? As far as I'm aware, there's only a few spaces where Flash is popular online:

- Web games. Irrelevant on tablets, since they pretty much run universally awful on mobile, and are pointless compared to native apps and HTML5 games (Zynga).
- Video. YouTube will probably phase out desktop Flash within a few years once browsers get their poo poo together a little more, and it's already totally HTML5 on mobile. I don't know why iOS still has the YouTube app; I just use their mobile site when I can.
- Bad restaurant sites. Thank god for Yelp.

So... where else are you seeing Flash? Honest question, not trying to be fanboy at all, I'm just wondering.

In addition to those there many websites which use flash. Granted I (and many of us) don't use them, but they do exist. Youtube is not the only video site which hosts videos using flash (and not all videos are available via HTML5 on Youtube itself). I'm not in the US so I've never personally used Yelp, but the Australia equivalent does use flash I think. Also flash ads are all over the web (easily blocked, but still prevalent).

I don't think anyone is white knighting flash at all. It runs like garbage on OSX and I wish it didn't exist, but when I need it, I'd rather be able to use it then wish I could.

you hit the nail on the head though, flash is used in almost all gaming and media content across the web. Blame actionscript.

It's up to you on if you discount how valid that is, but media wise: youtube, hulu, vimeo, fox, tbs, abc, adult swim, comedy central, HBO GO..pretty much the only major media site not using it is netflix and that uses silverlight instead, not HTML5.

games: kongregate and newsgrounds off the top of my head. I really can't think of any games site using HTML5.

html 5 canvas is the future, but it's still very limited. If it wasn't flash would have vanished already.

edit: marketshare charts pretty interesting. 70/30 in q4'10, 60/40 in q4'11 ios/android users. if it's anything like phones it'll be 45/55 by q4 this year.

Here's a serious iOS v Android tablet question: digital magazines, what kind of support is out there in the Android universe? Apple is trying to clean up the App Store by collecting the various magazine clients in Newsstand, and Amazon is a big seller through the Kindle platform but for some reason won't support it's Android client, just Fire and iPad.

Back when I set up my Mom's iPad, you couldn't get away from the apps by Newsweek, Oprah Magazine, etc. At least from my searching, Android seems kind of deficient in this area, the way the phones lacked a lot of official news apps from CNN and the like 18 months ago. But I'm probably not seeing the tablet-only apps, so I don't know if this is just my sample.

One would think magazines would be at home here, since Google isn't forcing people to use the in app purchases system to give them a cut of the entire publishing indistry's revenue.

You're ignoring the point all of us are making..let me quote hulu, maybe you'll take them seriously?

quote:

An Aside on HTML5
Those are the highlights of our new player. Before we move on to the other updates to our site today, let me address a related topic that’s been in the news a lot recently: HTML5. Plenty of users and members of the press ask about this topic all the time.

When it comes to technology, our only guiding principle is to best serve the needs of all of our key customers: our viewers, our content partners who license programs to us, our advertisers, and each other. We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn’t yet meet all of our customers’ needs. Our player doesn’t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren’t necessarily visible to the end user. Not all video sites have these needs, but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements.

You can discount all you want, HTML5 isn't taking over for flash yet. I hope it does at some point soon, flash isn't great.

My issue with HTML5 video is because it's usually associated with mobile, it becomes a prime target for "lets charge for this because mobile is some sort of special flower that we feel can't have access for free like PCs."

For example. I like to watch each week's Zero Punctuation on my Xoom. However, The Escapist views mobile access as a "premium" feature and the HTML5 video stream is behind a paywall. Fortunately, I don't have to deal with that and I can just watch it in flash as I would on a PC.

I wanted something like the laptop sleeve I have for a macbook, less of full carrying case and more of protection against tossing it into other objects like a backpack. Since availabilty still isn't that wide spread there's not many options tailored to the primes dimensions yet. I went with a wenger/swiss gear 10.2 sleeve as someone else mentioned it's a perfect fit for the prime + dock. Out of any of the generic cases for tablet only ipad 2 ones seem to work best, but the prime is thinner so it's something to keep in mind. rooCases are supposed to be decent too.

swissgear 10.2 (they make em without the handle/strap option too, i figured can't hurt to have 'em)

Sure enough, that's what it was.

I've seen 5 pages of people arguing that Flash is dead, when it's clearly not and they're just going by whatever the Apple status-quo is.

It's like if we were in medieval times and the king was castrated, everyone else in the kingdom would cut their dicks off to make him not feel bad. Just because Steve Jobs couldn't work out an agreement with Adobe and became a pissy baby about it, that doesn't mean iOS users have to degrade Flash. I have an iPhone - it's great.

But for daily computing, I *need* something that has expandable storage and works with every possible format. Apple doesn't serve me in that way, and my aunt just got an iPad and hates it because of what it *can't* do. The app store is also horribly neutered and unexciting - it's like if Disney was trying to filter a porn site and make it kid-friendly. Life isn't kid-friendly.

You have problems? Go into an actual brick and mortar store and get it replaced by guys who know what they're doing. You don't live close to one? Call Apple Care and get an English speaking guy from the same country you're calling from and get help.

Apple also has a good business practice where the customer is always right, and a very high reputation to uphold so they'll bend over backwards for their consumers

Their products are so popular that random stores stock random accessories - you can't go into one mall without finding a slew of cases or cords.

They are also so popular that the products will continue to be supported for years to come, and because it's so popular you know you're not buying into something that will phase out with it's own competitor in the same year.

People keep recommending Apple because it's like recommending it to a friend - you want to say what's best and what will work the most. the first post used the typical XDA/DROID DOES marketing reasons that an iPad sucked; it could have been a comment on a Gizmodo iPad article. The second called Apple fans "faggots." These are bad posts. I don't give a gently caress about what you should or shouldn't mention in a post.

And yes, you very clearly care about the iPad.

Look at the post above yours. I really don't. All I'm trying to do is discuss the latest android tablet, in the android tablet thread. Oddly enough, this doesn't exist in the android phone thread. Go figure.

They are all valid criticisms, just as valid as Asus's poor customer support.

They are the very reasons why many of us own an Android device.

They're just making sure that any misguided soul that wanders into the Android Tablet Megathread knows that all Android tablets are hacked together turds and to just buy an iPad instead. It's a public service they're doing.

With all the talk of buying tablets to hack them up, I could see how someone might think that!
