eschergirls is mostly about xenomorph poses but the general subject is "bad art in comics re: women". if you literally can't include a female character in a comic without plastering her butt and boobs in every single page that makes you a pretty bad artist, even if the poses are within the range of the humanly possible. it's just a different kind of bad.

i will agree that manara is pretty good though, be it because his style is more "elegant" or because he actually knows how to draw, illustrate, and tell a story. i'd chalk that terrible page (and the particular gripe the blog makes about it) to a terrible idea.

e: it is a bit creepy how every single manara female looks the same though

Thanks for clearing it up

Pornographic is exploitative, unsubtle. If what turns you on makes it porn then just seeing a girl or a guy you like on the street would be pornographic. There's a difference between Manara's erotic comics and your standard generic porno on the internet. There are a ton of novels from renowned authors who describe sex scenes in their books with great detail, but nobody calls them porno writers.

That's my opinion though.

I've read Lost Girls and I agree that it's not worth it, I think it fails as both porn and something more serious. YMMV though.

I saw the title Extreme Justice mentioned in a blog, and it was described as having the worst art ever. Naturally my curiousity was piqued so I went on GIS to look up some examples. This is what I found:

Blue Beetle is posed like Spiderman. Booster Gold is padded so he doesn't hurt himself I guess. Red headed woman can't decide what direction she is flying in, and Captain Atom...is that really Captain Atom rocking a Glam-Rock band hairstyle?

Blue Beetle's back doesn't look very stable and somewhere in time Booster Gold became X-O Manowars retarded doppleganger.

That's not a superhero battle we're looking at. That's interpretive dance.

Also, what is Captain Atom's chest symbol there in the first picture? It looks like a maple leaf, like he's Alpha Flight's Guardian.

Amusingly enough, Extreme Justice was drawn by Marc Campos who at the time was inked by Ivan Reis. The same Ivan Reis who has found great success and popularity on Green Lantern an Blackest Night. I guess he paid close attention back on EJ and learned exactly what not to do.

I never understood why SEVERAL artists (including one-time fan favorite Bart Sears) drew Captain Atom with a luxurious mane of long hair, when he was supposed to be an old-fashioned and somewhat square military officer who would have kept it "high and tight."

Also, Booster Gold armored up in the mid-'90s after Doomsday shredded his original costume during the Death of Superman arc, and then a generic "cyber-axe" wielding villain cleaved off one of his arms. He was bleeding to death, but Blue Beetle whipped up a suit of life support armor to save his BFF like it was no big thing.

As much as I love Beetle, Booster, and Cap and followed them throughout the '80s and into the '90s, even I only made it a few issues into Extreme Justice, so I never read the stories where Booster got his arm back or where the Wonder Twins were introduced into the DCU.

Do DC have grudge against Keith GIffen and J. M. DeMatteis or something? It seems like DC is destroying everything they made. First they raped and killed Sue Dibny, then they made Max Lord into a fullblown villain and had him shot Blue Beetle before they killed of Lord for good measure. They even destroyed Bialya.

Despite the hosed up and half-assed nature of the reboot, we did get some really solid books out of it. The Animal Man/Swamp Thing combo fills me witha creeping dread every month and I'm not one to get creeped out by movies/comics/video games. I, Vampire is amazing and even this team up with Batman hasn't diluted what makes the tone of the book. Batman and Batman & Robin are great as is the continuing misadventures of Hal "d-bag" Jordan in Green Lantern. Wonder Woman might be better than Rucka's run on it, it's certainly the first time I've actually given a poo poo about the character. Batwoman continues to be feast for the eyes, although the writing isn't as good as it was previously. Deathstroke, Suicide Squad and Demon Knights are balls to the wall action books that keep a smile a plastered to my face and, finally, Birds of Prey has introduced what may be the best new character of the year in Starling.

The rest of the reboot is average, with a few books falling into boring or bad territory, but I think on a whole, the reboot has given us better books. I still miss Power Girl and Stephanie Brown, Blue Beetle and Red Robin, but I'm over that for the msot part.

Keep in mind, I also say this as someone who is much more of a Marvel fan than DC.

mind the walrus
Sep 22, 2006

Oh don't get me wrong Soonmot I've heard and seen some really good things out of the reboot. Even when DC was on what I felt was a huge decline it was still putting out some very solid stuff in the fringes.

It was more of a decision to no longer financially patronize a company that only ever seems to be good in spite of its executive mandates.

Yeah the last Ambush Bug series made fun of all that. Further proof they hate him though, the last issue never came out, about a year after that, an did issue did come out about how the final issue disappeared. He did literally make Didio the villain of the DC universe though.
