Never heard of zucchini. I think I've heard of eggplant but I had no idea it meant aubergine. It's a bit like finding out you call a banana a flimbleflam, or an apple an arsetrumpet or something.

Imagine that brick wall has an open door in it.

In a normal game, that door is a portal that defines the boundary between this room and that room. If the portal isn't visible, that room doesn't have to be drawn at all.

In Minecraft, you're in one infinite room and there are no portals you can use to make that decision.

Imagine that door-free brick wall again. In a real game, the player can't ever get behind that wall. The wall doesn't have a back and there's nothing at all behind it.

In Minecraft, the world goes on forever and there's never not something behind something else.

Why doesn't Jeb bring back finite worlds? Honestly, I think it would make the "end game" more cohesive, as dumb as it is, because you only have that set amount of land to explore, whatever. With infinite worlds, the game just goes on forever, but with finite worlds, you have just your one island, then you move to the nether, to your stronghold, then to the end or whatever - you could alter the size of your map and terrain gen poo poo, but theoretically your world would have one of everything. It's up to you how to play the game, what to do and poo poo, because I doubt many people want to go to The End, but I said before a long time ago, it would allow for smaller maps and more customization towards your computers performance.

The last time I was on Reddit the nerds where were whining about obscure poo poo they had trolled the wiki for, like sheep eating grass, and bemoaned the loss of that rather useless feature, and Jeb is bringing it back, so why not bring back finite maps?

To be honest tho, it is much easier to implement stuff like frustum culling on voxels since there is a very well defined bounding box ;I So thats that atleast, instead of portals you get a very nice model to place QuadTree + frustum culling over so you can decide pretty quickly what chunks to render and not.

Then there is the whole optimize the chunks part too.. "oh you are within my view, ok, well, can I see you or is there something in the way? And how many cpu cycles can I spend pre-calcing this without it taking 1 hour to load the map?". My lil playground that I've basically done today have a quadtree + frustum culling implementation that is fairly nice already. 64*64*64 grid gradually split down to 4*4*4 chunks with raw block data. The plan is to mark chunks as invisible, if all children of a quad tree node is invisible then that node is invisible too, that will sort out alot of useless tests and rendering. Each chunk should also set up VBOs for fast rendering in a "smart way"(tm) and only rebuild VBOs when they are updated (alien creepers (tm)).

I feel like the "end game" for Minecraft is custom maps with specific mod packs for each map (so you don't have to say "only break clay blocks" and then a creeper takes out a wall anyway), but toward that end I really hope that making finite maps is enabled in the mod API, and further that they could have custom topologies. Worlds that can wrap around could have interesting applications, but most interesting in my opinion is wrapping vertically or even more complicated sorts of wrapping as well as what such maps could mean for multiplayer "race for the wool" maps.

Also, just curious, but Minecraft only keeps track of the surfaces of normal blocks that are exposed to non-normal blocks, right? Also, it saves that information to disk when it saves each chunk, right? As in, it doesn't recalculate which surfaces it has to render every time a chunk loads, does it?

Idles
Dec 31, 2007
Just idling.
Yeah, the engine doesn't have any surface data for blocks that have solid neighbors on all sides. Last time I looked at the chunk save file format, it doesn't store the render data (vertices, normals, texture coordinates), just the block data. However, from my own tinkering an algorithm to generate the render data typically doesn't take very long to run.

Willie Trombone
Feb 13, 2004

Oh, huh, I guess my intuition is way off then. I was thinking that might be one of the biggest slow-downs in visually loading chunks in single-player because there are typically more total blocks in a chunk than surfaces that need to be rendered... but I guess if their long-term intent is to make single-player and multiplayer work identically, then you wouldn't want to have servers sending out render data anyway.

I've been using Beastnode to host a server me and my friends play on for a while. Hasn't choked on us and the Dallas location means we all get decent connections. The Sheep plan (384 MB, apparently 1-12 players recommended) is $8 a month, so that's probably what you'd be looking for if you don't run mods (although note that they do allow modified server Jars for stuff like ModLoaderMp mods).

Minehost and Akliz are also both good if you're looking for goon-run hosts.

Yeah I would agree. Just checked out the blog and wasn't aware that he added buildings to the game. The item customization looks really promising as well, and it seems as if you can play as any creature in the game.

It does, but it doesn't read as cleanly as Minecraft and is built on a very different scale. Having a preference for one or the other is reasonable, but I don't think they're honestly similar enough that Cube World could be called better.

I liked the idea of putting limits on the size. I marked a 12x12 space and started to build, at first didn't know what to do but after putting some blocks i made a tower.

Downstairs we can find my pool

where i can put some music and relax after a long day of moving blocks,

If we go upstairs we can find a meeting room

and the bedroom

It was interesting putting limits on the size, i had to rebuild parts of the tower a couple times trying to build stairs and at the same time not modifying what i tried to do in each room.

Hey everyone, wanted to let you know we've just finished a big new page layout update for the Painterly site, largely thanks to the efforts of fellow goon Pixotic.

Everything should be a fair bit cleaner now, and run a lot more smoothly and display more consistently in different browsers. It also lays a ton of important back end groundwork you can't yet see for eventually cleaning up and modernizing the customizer code, to make it a lot more user friendly and allow for some pretty neat potential down the road database-driven features such as database-driven preview images and whatnot. There's also a widget thing for patch notes now, as well as one for a twitter feed so you can get update information there instead of chancing by it in this thread.

I hope everyone likes it - the page was crumbling and made in notepad-written HTML in far too many spots and really needed this overhaul to keep running. So you can now continue to get your textures in relative stability and with increased ease of use. :)

No hunger-meter, its to mainstream. I'm gonna add some quirky indiecharm to it.

There will be an annoyance-meter. Whenever a stone-like block breaks there will be a chance that you will be hit by pepples that will increase annoyance with 1.

Annoyance will affect the speed of breaking blocks in a bad way.

The only way to remove annoyance is to craft choclate-chip cookies.

Ofc the cocoa beans won't be added until later on and then only as random loot from dungeon chests.

Good. It was so hard to get before, you had to find the least common enemy in the game and the most powerful enemy (save the dragon) in the game to get them.
