I actually tried them on and they fit almost perfectly. They were a little long though, so I would have to wear Maddux stirrups instead of the full ones. Still not sure what to actually do with them...

edit: A friend actually offered me $20 for them just now. As much fun as 400% profit would be, these are just too cool to own, I told him no.

My dad just gave me his childhood collection. Mostly 64 (Mantle!) and 66 (Jim Palmer RC x4!), but there's a 59 Aaron in there too. Most of them look like they'd grade in the 7.5 range. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Awesome card. Clemente is my favorite player of all time and that is one of my favorite cards of his.

One of those recently sold on eBay for $152 graded as SGC 88. I wish I'd bought it as that seemed like a great deal.

I guess I never noticed this because I never collected older baseball cards, but was the Americanization of Clemente's first name on baseball cards ("Bob" as opposed to "Roberto") something that was done to make him seem less foreign to white fans of the late '50s and early '60s? Glancing over his Topps cards, it seems like most of his earlier cards went with "Bob" (save for his 1955 rookie card, which uses "Roberto") but this practice seems to have ceased once he became a more established star.

Interesting question.

No idea. Initial idea was that it was maybe related to spacing on the card and the size of the font.

ie - "Roberto" wouldn't really fit on that 1961 Topps. And really wouldn't fit on the 1959 Topps from the last page.

But look at the 1968. It has plenty of room, but still went with "Bob."

Yes, it was this. This was common at the time (see: Sandy Amoros). He forcibly made the press call him Roberto.

On Pawn Stars tonight they bought a photo signed by Harmon Killebrew, Willie Mays, and Mickey Mantle for $275. COA was by Tristar. Any thoughts on that price?

Also if you guys have more links about how shady that guy Drew from "Authentic Autographs Unlimited" is (or the other sports guy they bring in) I'd love to hear them, all I've turned up on Google are various blog comments saying people don't trust his COAs and of course the link to that bogus Lou Gehrig jersey that was on the show.

It is my understanding that he works for an untrustworthy firm in Vegas and there are many more highly reputed authenticators that the show could use but don't.

About 2/3 of the way down this page is some more info about John Reznikoff, who authenticated a signature on Pawn Stars as coming from 'Al Pacino' when it was actually a signature of Godfather producer Al Ruddy.

Ah, so that's where the it's worth $500 line came from (assuming this auction is from before they taped).

I don't see how they rip people off. You're paying for the convenience of cash in your hand right now versus selling it yourself. Yeah people could just set up an ebay auction themselves (hell, a lot of the time that's just what the shop does), and you'd probably make more money, but you wouldn't have it immediately.

Drew is a total hack. Didn't see the show but the idea of a Tristar holo on a Mantle seems a bit suspicious just from the description. He did shows with them, but I'm not sure they were stickering stuff at the time.

When put under closer examination, you can see things like how the pen stopped in certain places, the indents of the pen on the surface, and miniscule details like that. An autopen can make the same design, but not the same indentations like the actual signer.

Lipstick Apathy
Just spent the better part of my night reading the thread. Love it and want to share my story. In the mid 90's for a period of 4 years I was a batboy for the LA Dodgers at their spring training home in Vero Beach before they up and moved and destroyed baseball forever. :arghfist: dem bums. There was a good article on ESPN about the boys leaving but I cant seem to find it. Anyways.

What the means is i got off school for spring training, worked the old timers games, and worked till about 1am during the minor league season! No real great minor leaguers came through single A ball - I think Karim Garcia was the most successful. Anyways, while there I managed to steal/take/get all kinds of stuff.

Top memories come from the older timers who were just old retired guys in town in their meager houses and humble attitudes. Top autograph item is a Sandy Koufax autograph ball on the sweet spot. I even got a carl erskine one too. Kicking myself for not getting Pee Wee Reese. And then one game during the season the old Frank Howard tossed me a glove and asked me to warm him up. We played catch for about 20 minutes and it was loving AWESOME as it sounds. I've never been so on target with my throws ever. This guy ran up to me afterwards and said "you just lived my childhood dream". My boss ran up to me and said never do that again. gently caress you dude.

The best bat I have is a Piazza bat who was notoriously cheap about them. Every time he broke one this servant would come up and request it so he would get reimbursed. One time he split one in two and I lied saying one half flew off somewhere and couldn't find it. About 2 weeks later I went up to him and asked him to sign it. He responds "oh that's where it went". me I just went... :smugdog:

I also got a lot of signed cards by waiting after the games or just showing up and walking into the locker room. I just "found" this autograph recenetly I had totally forgotten about, but it's up there. My Wade Boggs topps 85 autograph.Favorite is a personal one from Ryan Sandberg (I played 2b all through HS and hit like steve jeltz too!).

I find myself nowadays able to buy boxes of stuff from the mid to late 80's and early 90's reliving the glory days when I too thought these cards would be a retirement. 15$ boxes for a 91 Upper deck just to relive my younger days is such a drat good deal.

This post is way long so...thanks for creating the thread and giving me something to do tonight!

Depends on how old they are. If they're cards from when she was young then they could be worth bank.

If they're from the the 80's through the 90's then yeah, probably be more useful to burn them for heat.

My grandfather owned a small convenience store from the early 1940's through the 70's, and he said he used to throw away a lot of cards every year that had gone unsold. I cringe every time I think of it.
