Welp, I just put down a deposit on a new 848 Streetfighter. I am getting a yellow one, because the internet tells me that yellow is faster. Now I just hope it shows up before I get home, so I don't have to sit around not riding it. I am so excited you guys.

I am slightly concerned about the lack of wind protection for longer rides, but everything I have read tells me that under about 85 it is quite comfortable, plus the bike itself is supposed to be quite roomy, so here's hoping I can find a decent looking tank/tailbag combo to go on some trips with it. (Florida is the land that turns forgot) Plus it looks like I am going to extend out here for another month, which will let me come home to the bike waiting for me, plus net me enough money to pay for it, so woo.

My bike was pushed over again today. 2nd time in one month, 5th time in one year. The damage this time around: Bent steering bar (again) Smashed indicator Broken speedo (constantly doing 90mph) There are several other bikes where I park, yet mine is always the one that gets attacked. I don't get it. I'm loving sick of motorbikes at this point.

The problem is I work in a casino, so we get a lot of pissed off dudes around the car park. I've parked it inside the building before but they told me to take it out as it's a 'fire hazard'. You know, with all these documented events of bikes spontaneously combusting and everything.

Can you get a bike cable and essentially lash it to an immovable object like a parking lot pillar? Alternately can you park it further from where customers come in/out without undue theft risk?

Ask if you can park it in the loading bay, just chain it up there somewhere. At least then you'd have cameras showing who knocks it over/you'd know it's some douche you work with.

O.o Yeah, now that you point it out, the little plastic thing in between the subframe and frame look out of place. The bike has been a salvage title since 1,400 miles and like 7 years ago, and now has ~30k miles on it. The front forks were upgraded with new springs & oil a while ago. Just how bent do they look? I haven't had a chance to take it out on a ride. Was too cold to do so yesterday.

Exactly. Low-octane gas is easier to ignite, therefore the engine will be less stressed and make more power.

Getting way better at dirt riding. Spent all day yesterday on the XL175 doing a little trail riding, hitting whoops and berms, and doing some smallish hill climbs. First few sessions felt wrong when the bike moved around under me but now that my mountain bike thighs have returned, I can spend all day up on the pegs and everything just kind of gels. I learned something new! Saturated logs are slick as ice, and there's a bash plate on the XL for a reason

KozmoNaut posted:Exactly. Low-octane gas is easier to ignite, therefore the engine will be less stressed and make more power. Holy crap what are you people saying? Low octane gas is easier to ignite under compression. In high compression engines with a lot of advance you're likely to detonate considering the high compression ratio and "late" spark. I've blown the top end of my trials bike this way. Now, if you know you don't detonate on your respective bike, then okay. Also the whole "less stressed more power" thing is a bit strange phrasing. More power creates more stress. Consider the individual impulse on each piston and ask yourself what more power means. Maybe there is some other dynamic at play here that I don't understand but this is sounding crazy to me.

I'll never figure out why random feel the need to tell me "I know a guy who died on a motorcycle..." No one says "Oh, you're a firefighter? I know a guy that died doing that!" or "Oh, you were in the Air Force? I know a guy that died in the military..." or "You drive a truck? I know a guy that died driving a truck!" I know somebody that died because they're old. I don't go around telling old people they're gonna die because they're old.

Alright, time to tell a story and employ magical thinking to give meaning to meaningless deterministic events. As often happens on lazy Saturday mornings, I ponder the purpose of existence, which is deeply tied to my ownership of two equally improbable vehicles: My KLR and my WR250R. I have previously vowed to sell the KLR, coming on several equally firm vows to sell the WR. On Saturday afternoon I came to the decision that I'd retrieve my KLR from storage. I figured I'd try parking it outside my apartment complex for a while (having found a pole to secure it to) and see how it suited me. I stuffed my motorcycle gear in my long-suffering 96' Saab 900 Turbo for the journey out, figuring I'd ride a bicycle back to retrieve it later. I checked the oil, shut the hood, and started the Saab for the first time in 2 weeks. It came to life with a loping, uneven idle, which settled out into an even murmur as the ECU came to terms with a persistent minor vacuum leak as well as whatever MAF sensors report when insects go screaming up the intake. Full of care, I even stopped at a gas station to air up the tires, the proceeded forth. About 1 mile away from the KLR's resting-place, I started to smell coolant burning. As I pulled near the driveway, the Saab began letting out big white gouts of steam as coolant vaporized on the engine headers. As far as I could tell, the radiator had let loose somewhere, which isn't surprising given the overall condition of the hoses down there. So here's the question. Which of these is the most reasonable explanation? a) The Saab was already injured, and I unconsciously predicted this new wound erupting, hence my inexplicable desire to retrieve the KLR and ultimately park the Saab away from the grubbing hands of meter-maids. b) The Saab, which has survived so many journeys on so little maintenance, became enraged at my inclination to exchange it for the KLR. c) The KLR, begrudging me its extended disuse, called out to me and then vindictively struck down the Saab out of spite. The weather has just turned back into not poo poo here (England), and of course I'm leaving in <2 weeks. I am going to The Land of Thais, where the bikes are small and the traffic is incredibly dangerous. Will I be able to resist riding one of the ubiquituous 150cc scooters in traffic? Probably not. Boy I'm going to miss riding a real motorcycle though. Anyone ridden in this area of the world and have horrible warnings for me?

Those 150cc step-throughs are awesome fun, try to get proper brand name ones if you can find them anymore. Last time i was in Thailand it was almost all chinese knock offs which are fine around town but i'd be wary of going too far on them. I did 2up 150km round trips on a honda wave and it never missed a beat. Up around Chang Mai/Pai you should be able to rent 250 enduro bikes easily enough, although i never had much joy with anything bigger than what the locals are on as the bikes arent maintained as well/less parts available.

Yeah, it kinda sucks. It's to evade any sort of extra hand-wringing in the upcoming half year with no substantial income coming in, but at least I'm getting what hopefully looks like a sweet SV out of it. The 636 is just begging for speeding tickets too, and I haven't had any since I started motorcycling over two years ago. I asked about the subframe of the SV (black plastic triangles were loosened) and the seller said the frame and everything was straight. Will be going over everything with a comb and riding it around (as long as its warmer) then I'll be lugging it 3.5 hours back home as my cheap new lover.
