A portly feline wizard waddles forth, muttering something about conjured food.

The Densha De Go episode made me remember that I got Railworks 3 for DIRT cheap during Steam's Xmas sale (it was 90%[!] off). So I fired it up and hauled some coal hoppers across the countryside. :haw: It's probably the most relaxing game I've ever played. Thankfully, RW3 isn't as harsh as DDG, in that, as long as you don't derail the drat train by being an idiot, you'll be fine.

Unfortunately, it's the latter.

I don't really know why they had to use the Valis license. Is there some insane Valis fanbase in Japan who are in love with the character or something? You don't exactly need an excuse to make a hentai game in japan.

edit: Upon further research, the Turbografx version had some pretty gratuitous fanservice so I guess it makes a bit more sense now.

It had more to do with Telenet Japan trying to avoid going out of business than legitimately listing to some fringe fanbase. They really thought this would save them.

You know they say that all demons are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Pyro Jack and you can see that statement is not true, hee-ho!
Yes, it's a horrible shame that those Valis games had to exist, but look at the bright side: Telenet Japan died in the process, and it showed there was no market for Valis porn. Now the next time somebody things to revive a franchise in that manner, they can rethink their position by looking at how Valis turned out. Valis died so that others may live (or not be turned to porn).

How about :

NC7 - Virtual Console - Super Mario Kart (15mins)
NC4 - Virtual Console - Downtown Special (15mins) Over half of it is co-op which is cool.
Super Mario Brothers 2/Lost Levels - (30mins) Lots of arcade sequences, naked Japanese men and a clear showing of skill difference between Arino and that amazing kid at the game.

If you want really short and sweet I would suggest:

Season One, Episode "M8" - Door Door (9 mins) Cute game, Guest Appearances and shows how terrible Arino is at games after being compared to that QA guy. I think this is probably the best, short episode.

So yeah, that train game was pretty great. I got curious and looked up that Railfan game on PS3 and they either used real train footage with a UI over it or the graphics were good enough I couldn't tell the difference in a small video box. That's amazing.

It's hires video footage. The Train Simulator series used video footage for their graphics while Go by Train! used rendered graphicsx. In the crossover games they used the Train Simulator graphics.

Having seen the Densha de Go episode, now I can only conclude that they're not kidding when they say you can set your watch by the trains in Japan. This game isn't messing around.

Anyway, that was a great episode, especially for something that seems more or less like an ultraglorified Mario Party minigame. Arino would make the world's worst train conductor and it's amazing.

I noticed that I get a little apprehensive whenever AD Watanabe shows up onscreen. Not because I don't like her but because of the jokes Arino constantly makes. If there's one aspect of the show that screams "cultural differences" to me, it's how a cast member's screentime is almost entirely devoted to creative ways of pointing out how fat they are and calling them ugly, and yet she seems to be a good sport about it.

If I get other people to watch this show, I try not to recommend episodes from the seasons she's in, just because it might be so hard to explain to someone not already sold on japanese humor. "No, see, it's really all in good fun! She's even playing along, shoveling that cake into her mouth and stuff!"

It's still really uncomfortable to watch. Low-hanging fruit or not, she's really the only AD I really feel like they get that mean-spirited about.

But it's not remotely mean-spirited, that's what you guys aren't getting. He's not trying to give her an eating disorder, he's a comedian trying to make the quickest, most reliable joke he can given the circumstances, most of which involve a fat person with food always nearby.

It may not be intended to be but it comes across as such. This may be a result of the editing but every time she appears onscreen it is for not only Arino but the actual direction and framing of the scene to berate her.

"He's a comedian, so he makes fat jokes" doesn't actually make it okay, which is what you don't quite seem to get. The fact that it is a quick and easy joke doesn't make it less uncomfortable to watch.

Watanabe staring at the steak bento the entire time they were choosing was also hilarious and it didn't even need commenting on. If Nakayama actually suffered from debilitating shyness, Arino poking at him so much and the sound effect for the excessive bowing would be emotionally devastating, but no one's concerned about that because it's hilarious too. :colbert:

If a joke is that obvious and easy then it's probably a joke that shouldn't be made.

The fat jokes never really bugged me (and he's definitely given Tanii a lot of poo poo over the years for it too, it's not just Watanabe) but I think in the recent episode the out of the blue ugly comment was a little bit mean. Like yeah, she's fat, whatever haha fat jokes are fine but she can't really do much about the fact that even if she dropped the weight she'd be pretty ugly :(

I don't want to open a can of worms, but is it just that there's no gender bias in fat jokes over there, or it is just a different cultural sense of humour period?

(ie here it's usually in poorer taste to make a fat joke about a woman than a man, owing to the difference in how overweight women are treated vs men by society at large.)

As I understand it, the trouble with this is that guilt is very rarely a good motivator for people, and is often more likely to cause body image issues and depression that further exacerbate the problem.

Edit: Or, with people who aren't obese and are comfortable with their bodies, they might think it comes off as preachy and rude, kind of like with smokers.

FINALLY watched Go By Train! ... It was. Interesting. No, I am not shopping for Go By Train 64! STOP LOOKING AT MY EBAY WINDOW!!! :tinfoil:

I wonder if it's really that hard to stop a train perfectly or if it's now like partially automated or something? We have an elevated commuter train in our city and it always stops more or less perfectly where it needs to and it does have a driver. I also kinda wondered while watching what our train line would look like in that game. :xd: I guess you couldn't really get up to 60 KPH, though. The stops are too close together. I guess it wouldn't make a very interesting GBT level, though it is scenic, since it's up high.

Are people looking for a reason to stop liking Arino? The way I see it, his job is to make jokes. The fat jokes, the overhyped perviness, that's what he's supposed to do and he knows it. It's his schtick, not necessarily an accurate representation of Arino the Person, or Japanese culture in general.

I'm not the biggest fan of the fat jokes and I'm not even fat, but the staff are all targeted and they all know what they're getting into working with him. It's just a show, he's just a dude, let's enjoy it at face value, yah?

He's just poking fun at her, since she started shaking her head in a manner that you would see in a shampoo commercial or something.

Like, a lot of his comments sound more like jokes that you would say to someone you were comfortable with. They are the kind of insults that you throw around with your friends because that's what people do. We insult each other, especially the ones we are close with.

Obviously, that "only beautiful women" thing was light-hearted. He was just poking fun at a mannerism of hers like he pokes fun at Nakayama's shyness or Inoue's... well, just being Inoue, or everyone else.

Some of you need to take those sticks out of your arses (it'll help with your results on those scales too). It's not like he's mocking a disabled person or something; she's fat.
If a new romantic wants to wear his hair like a gull then I'm free to mock him for it, similarly if someone is going to keep shoving pies down their throat and not exercise then why would mocking them be any worse? (This is a rhetorical question.) I just don't see a problem with making fat people the (rather large) butt of a joke.

Quite a lot of humour can be cruel, even when the joke is on someone fictional they're usually a stand-in for a real person or people, and they can be a lot harsher than Arino's gags, sometimes the joke IS about just how far the comedian will go (see: Frankie Boyle, Jimmy Carr, Ricky Gervais and many more). And that guy who said obvious jokes shouldn't be made doesn't know much about humour; it may not be an exact science but there are structures and patterns and, sure, sometimes an obvious joke shouldn't be said but then there are times when it's even funnier when it is said.

Also what the guy above me said: it wasn't an attack, it was a joke.

Arino may not be the greatest comedian but he's been doing this for a long time and knows what he's doing. He's making jokes for the show, if the two of them were are at social function I doubt he would be so forthright about her weight in any jokes he made, though it would probably depend on how close they are and the people they're with.

On a more serious note that episode was great! Thank you to the entire team for your hard work thus far (congratulations for to zari-gani for the poster too!) and continued work in the future;

Not to turn this into a huge debate but "it's a joke!" is also what people use to defend a lot of horrible racist or sexist or rape jokes too. That doesn't make them okay.

I think the only thing that does significantly bother me about the show are the jokes towards Watanabe. If only because there never seems to be ANY mention of her unless it's about her being fat or unattractive. It seems like that is the only reason she is there sometimes, and it really makes me cringe.
