By the way I'm not saying you should buy three copies because I get a royalty for these, 'cause I won't. It's because the more successful it is, the longer they'll get to keep the license, and the more DVD releases we might get. Besides, this is the best way for us overseas fans to show support for the show!

I've been sitting on the news for about three weeks. And now you know why Random Stranger immediately retracted his statement after stating the Kotaku 12 are up for grabs again :v:

I dunno about that. I'm sure the Japanese companies have final say on anything that goes in the DVD. All I can say is anything that's not included in the DVD that you think should've gone in there, Discotek Media probably tried to get.

They're aiming to release this quite soon, so as soon as I get to start working for them, there's likely going to be a dry spell of SA-GCCX releases. But the dry spell will be for a good cause.

Here's what I'm most excited about : they're going to try to get the original show transcripts for me. Hooray for greater accuracy and no more having to listen to a line over and over to hear it right!

Not that it's affected the final product any--and this is speaking as a professional translator (of mostly video games). I can't imagine what a pain in the rear end it must be to do that kind of interpreting-translating, writing down in one language what you hear in another. Not to mention the usual timing pitfalls of subtitles. Kudos, and may this initial translation job be only the first of many!

This is cool news. When I first heard about the Kotaku episodes being released on dvd, I was upset. But now that I'm hearing they are being re-translated by zari-gani, I'm a very excited about them. Congrats on getting the job. So this will pretty much be licensed version of the SA translated episodes? If so, then that is fine by me.

This is pretty awesome. I ended up skipping a few of the Kotak-translated episodes because of the terrible narrator and translation job, but hearing that zari-gani's working on the translations makes the DVD release much more exciting. Congrats!

I was gonna buy the DVD anyhow (and I was gonna make everyone I know buy it too like I did with Retro Game Challenge) but the fact that it'll be competently retranslated by zari-gani just makes it all the sweeter :3: I am SUPER excited for this. Absolutely. And buying the Japanese books and the games. Every little bit helps.

One more thing, everyone. Discotek media is very familiar with this thread. I don't know if anyone there is an actual poster (and they may not want to say just to avoid any potential issues) but they are going to see your comments, questions, and opinions.

Man, now I'm even more exasperated that my contractor was passed over for the initial translation of those Kotaku episodes. My contractor told them I was familiar with the material, ready to go at a moment's notice, and even ready to work at a discount to do them, but Kotaku went with that other contractor's work instead.

Congratulations, and good luck on getting those original transcripts if they still exist. I've never managed to get one for a show like that.

vvvvv I'm not going to re-translate everything, but I'm definitely going to comb through the whole thing and make any appropriate changes/fixes. They need to be refined for sure if they're going to be official subs (especially 53 Stations, as that was my first SA-GCCX job and there's a few issues with my work there; SOS was an early job of mine too... My second one, even?). The transcripts should help immensely with that.

I could be wrong though.

zari-gani posted:

Getting technical here but the people who mumble, aren't properly miked, and talk in a disjointed and slow manner (I'm looking at you Kibe!) are a real pain to time. I know their line is in there somewhere but I can't hear a clear starting or end point. If I'm lucky the show captioned them because then I can just match the show's captions.

This is great and I will definitely be buying a copy. I would be hesitant if they kept only the english narrator, but having the original Japanese track available removes all doubt. It's too bad that the transcripts are not all publicly available online, but I guess there is little call for that. It would make be so much easier to get the gist of what people are saying.

It's not animation, but the real stories!
Discotek Media is a pretty awesome company, granted their catalog is like half asian porn. But they also released Fist of the North Star in its entirety on DVD and even went through the trouble of getting the 2008 remaster of the show, which not even the licensed versions that are available for streaming had. So I'm 100% sure that they'll do a great job with this release, especially since zari-gani is working on it.

Part is because Arino is talking all loud and clear, then suddenly *mumblemumblemumble*, usually combined with them interrupting eachother or just other louder noises drowning them out. Its not the biggest deal, but it sorta feels like a big speedbump I guess.

I too will buy the DVD when it releases. I hope that the GCCX franchise succedes in the West. I need Bandai Namco to bring ANC2 to the US. I have RGC in Englesh and the Japanese import for ANC, but I need BN to bring the 2nd game to the US. I am still enjoying the import version though and will eventually import the first GCCX game as I would love to hear Arino's voice in the first game. Maybe BN will hire you to translate the second game.

Just putting this out there, but since this is a collection of 12 episodes that are going to be viewed in a specific order, there might be some weird context changes?

Some very careful wording in the early episodes (like the dialogue during the very first scene in which an AD appears) could be crucial in introducing viewers to some essential concepts of the show? Wheras before, it was just an AD showing up in a random episode, it now has a slightly different context to some viewers, as the episode now exists in a bubble of 12 episodes, and this is suddenly a pivotol moment, and the introduction of a concept that has no actual explanation within the narrative of the episode.

That's a good point. I'll see what I can do (it would have to be very careful wording), but I'm hoping the DVD will come with some sort of insert that explains the ADs and their well-known traits.

Fantastic news on the DVD's and congrats on landing the gig!

People: Discotek does quality work in general, at least on the anime side of things when I was more in sync with their offerings. When life smashed me down/current ongoing, crippling joblessness, I had to step away from my well wrought R1 anime collection ways, but their offerings made up a nice assortment of the final things I was able to get.

I don't know when I will be able to afford this dvd release, but it is surely now "up there" on the to-do list and at least the wishlist---would be a prime thing for the holidays as this last great while there's been nothing of the sort that could bring the kind of smile to my face that this show does despite my being rather down and out on life in general.
