Padding quietly down the stairs, with footsteps muffled by soft-soled shoes, Mitsuo catches JR asking for help. He steps up to the door. Shifting the sword belt around to hang off his back, he crouches into a three-point stance, well-practiced from his days in Munich playing pickup football with a squad of American GIs. With his shoulder set against the door he nods to JR and waits.

Athletics +2 -/++ = +3 to throw up "In Position." Passing the tag to Piell so he can open the door.

Jenny hangs back from the barricade, trying not to get too nervous about the flooded basement of death they were spending so much time busting in to. Deep breaths. Serenity. Garlic always reminded her of Bubbe's cooking, so that was actually helping her not freak out a little.

Ada was standing besides her. She seemed so much more... poised than Jenny was. Maybe it was the outfit? A pristine white tank top didn't seem that much more conducive to keeping control of yourself than her own dark blue dress shirt and medium-long skirt, but maybe the lack of concern over the way she looked might help in a fight?

Hang on, why is she looking at her hand that way?

"Ada? What's wrong with your hand?"

Scholarship +++/ +4 = 7 to do a quick medical exam on Ada's hand, trying to figure out what's going on.

Jenny pulls Ada's hand into the bright light of Cole's quartz. The color seems to be off. It looks... greyish.

And it's starting to feel heavier.

Hugues stood back while JR, Mitsuo and Cole handled the heavy lifting, he wouldn't be able to help with that. Instead he noticed Jenny looking at Ada's hand. From the way Jenny was acting, it seemed like whatever was up with it couldn't be explained by science.

"Here, let me take a look at it." He said, using a quick glowing spell on his gauntlet as he took her hand in his. A vampire attack could happen at any second, so he needed to be quick.

As quietly as he can, Mitsuo looks over his shoulder and asks, "What is going on back there? Have we got a problem?" With all of his leverage forced squarely up against the door, he's feeling more than a little exposed. The last thing he needs is something jumping on them from behind, or worse - it looks like Ada's the center of attention - something riding Ada suddenly deciding to pick a new target or targets.

The desk slides forward without much fuss or noise and the door stands wide open. Cole's light doesn't go very far into the room, and the water is an opaque murky brown. It looks like the basement was used as a storage room, there are stacks of boxes along the wall and rusty filing cabinets. Nothing really looks out of place, except that the water has obviously been there for some time. Paper and office supplies float forlornly among other, unidentifiable lumps.

With the door open, Mitsuo fires one last glance back at Ada. It looks like there's something going on, but he can't figure out what it is, and there's definitely something going on behind door #2. Best to get the recon done and deal with other things later if necessary.

Mitsuo takes a shallow breath. The irises of his eyes dilate slightly. He opens his mouth just a crack and mutters, "消えて." Then his outline shimmers and vanishes. Even the splashing of the water as he walks settles down to a gentle murmur. With a hand on the hilt of his blade he ducks through the door and into the next room, hugging a wall as he surveys.

Casting Vanish as a rote. +4 Alertness (stupid water) to detect Mitsuo for 3 exchanges.

Compelling Cole's "Veteran of the Vampire Wars" to make him so focused on looking for BCV's that he doesn't notice Ada is in trouble.

Warden Cole (FP:1->2)

Cole steps out after Mitsuo into the basement proper, eyes and ears open. As a water specialist he's pretty good at moving quietly even calf-deep in the stuff. The light still makes him obvious to anyone looking, but that can't really be helped. Cole leans over and looks at the papers floating on the water. The latest date on any of them is 1991. If Reggie and Reginald are the same person, which seems likely, the last time this shop did real business was around twenty years ago.

Stealth: ++/+ +1 = 4, -1 from the water = 3. "Holding a Light" so only applies to sound.
Investigation: +--- +4 = 2, discovers old paperwork. (How exciting!)

As J.R. sloshes out into the water, there is a sound. A dull, metal sound, like an aluminum pipe bouncing off cement.

The water stirs. Cole moves forward, far enough for his light to shine on a closed door on the far end of the room. The sound continues, pounding out a steady beat.

The door opens, and a man stumbles out. He is looking down, and dressed like someone who lives on the street. He wobbles slightly in the water as the door shuts behind him, slammed by someone else in the room.

The bum does not seem to have noticed any of you.

Biting her lip in concentration, Jenny focuses on the portion of the hand Hughes was indicating. It looked more or less like any other part of the hand, about where the captoid and scaphoid bones met. Still, when she brushed her hands against the spot Jenny felt something utterly foul emanating from it. A faint sense of nausea and cold, dark despair.

Shivering at the sensation, Jenny draws up power and throws it against the foulness. Nothing happens for a moment, but then it catches and begins to recede.

Summoning up a 5-shift counterspell and taking a 2-stress hit for doing so. Rolling Discipline gets me -++- +4 = 4, tagging Co-Op Spellcasting to get it up to 6.

As Jenny channeled power into the curse, Ada gasped. A million small sensations came rushing back to her, itches and minor pains and pure, simple sense of touch. Her hand was stiff and a bit hard to move, but if Hugues had been right about his diagnosis, it was a small price to pay for avoiding a curse. "Thanks, Jen, I owe you one." She whispered, as she massaged some feeling back into her hand. As she busied herself with that task, Hugues question caught her offguard. Turning to face him, she frowned.

"I...what...why would you even ask? What does that have to do with this situation, for starters?" She said, glaring at Hugues, her tone defensive. Of all the strange things to worry about right now...

"It's nothing you should be asking about, you know." She said, her tone defensive. "You want to ask private questions, do it when we're not on a raid looking for some bloodsuckers, understood?" It was less a question and more a statement: Ada's entire posture, body language and tone indicated that, if Hugues tried to press the issue further, he wouldn't like the way things would end.

Well that got his attention. The transient's face comes up and oh what a face it is. Or isn't. The man's face is a mess of blood and bone, it looks like someone beat it in with a baseball bat until there wasn't anything left. He does not appear able to understand J.R.'s question.

Sensing his veil slipping, Mitsuo sidles up behind Zombo(com). Between the darkness, his veil, and the smoking barrel of JR's Ruger, the bum is completely oblivious. Mitsuo sets his hand on the hilt, thumb extended. While it's distracted by its new cranial vent, he sweeps the blade out its scabbard, turning as he goes to complete an upward cut.

Hugues lowered his head in shame at Ada's comment. Right, this was a bad time to figure out what was with that ghostly version of herself.

There were sounds of splashing and a gunshot from downstairs, so Hugues rushed down and saw Mitsuo, Cole and JR taking on a pair of worn and ragged adults. Wait...did that one have half of it's face blown off? Zombies. Dammit, he brought all this garlic for nothing!

From his careful position at the bottom of the stairs, he raised his right gauntlet, and fired.

Compel on Cole's high concept: "Junior Warden" to have no clue how to fight zombies.

One of the problems with being drafted during wartime is that they only really teach you to fight whatever you're warring with. Cole knows just about everything there is to know about the Red Court, which is pretty goddamn useless now, and he knows enough to kill a White or Black Court vamp as well. But zombies? Spirits, how do you even kill a zombie? JR's shot to the face only staggered it, Mitsuo's sword didn't even make it flinch, and the Kid's fireball, which had nearly killed a demonspawn outright not 6 hours ago, only cost it an arm?

drat, these things were tougher than they had any right to be. But Cole was in his element, literally, and he could do something with that. He quickly knelt down and touched the water with his right hand, focusing on the zombie grabbing J.R.

"Iqwha."

Water Evocation on Squishy to freeze him solid. 5 shifts, Discipline: +-+/ +6 = 7.

As if on cue, a third cadaver rises from the water and splashes towards J.R. with a growl. It looks quite a bit more decomposed than the other two, and it's eyeless sockets glow bright red. But then it spots Mitsuo. It dashes right past J.R. and lunges at Mitsuo with surprising speed.

As the zombies began to rise, Ada reached for her knife with a half-instinctive motion, as she looked down at the trail of blood that had led them there, potential fuel for a spell that could help counter the water's grounding effect. She would have immediately jumped into the fray, but the slowed-down movements of her knife hand stopped her before she could begin weaving a spell. This was, and always had been, a trap, just as she suspected. Trying to simply destroy the zombies would be about as effective as prying the jaws of a bear trap open after it had snapped shut. The solution wasn't to keep fighting, but to find the source of the undead. Closing her eyes, Ada lifted the hand that had been cursed and focused. It was a fair guess that whoever had been responsible for the undead was also behind the curse ward. Maybe she could exploit the remaining traces of the spell to find their source.

Rolling an assessment to see if the blood on the floor could power a spell, then giving up my main action to roll an assessment to find the source of the animation spell, using Lore for both. Tagging Fading Curse to boost the latter roll. Foxxbot results are +/-+ and /-//, making the final results +3 and +3. Let's see what Ada finds...

Ada reaches her will into the blood trail. Whoever's it is, they're dead. The blood carries no connection to a living being. Touching the splattermark and staring at the mess of zombies, Ada is almost sure it belonged to the bum. The water distorts anything else she could have gotten from the stain.

Reaching for the curse mark fills Ada with cold, involuntary fear. Whoever set that trap was powerful, way more powerful than anything in this place. She can't find the source at all, it must be far from here. Whoever built that trap isn't the one tapping out the drum.

I really, really wish this had been more surprising. Black Court Vampires were nasty. Well, at least we planned for this.

Jenny takes a quick look at the garlic explosion thing Hughes had handed her. It looked pretty much like a normal bulb of garlic, but if you touch it with a bit of magical power, and... it looks like a faintly glowing bulb of garlic. Right. Great.

Time to get this far away from her and into one of the drat bloodsuckers. Concentrate, keep your eye on the target. Take a half-step back, wind the arm back, then step into the throw and release in a smooth motion with your full body weight behind it.

"Hah! Take that, soulsucker!"

Nobody tells Jenny anything. Self-compel on Ingenue's Intercession to waste the garlic grenade on the 'vampires'.

Discipline roll of ///- +5 = 4 to throw the grenade. I'm taking the free tags off of Lopsided and Useless Right Arm to get it to 8.

Zombum defends! Athletics: --+- +3 = 1. Ugh. Tagging "Surprisingly Sturdy" for a reroll: /--+ +3 = 2. Barely enough to stay alive.

Jenny's garlic bulb flies through the air like a Predator Missile, smacking right into the zombie's gaping mouth. The zombie waves it's good arm, confused. A second later, BOOM. The water churns and dust and debris falls from the ceiling. Even the drumming noise skips a beat.

When the cloud of garlic dissipates slightly, the zombie's head is completely gone. It twists and jerks like a dying bug but... it's still on its feet somehow!

Squishy rolls a 2 so uses his +3 block from grapple to defend. Takes 8 stress.

The zombie is still half-frozen when J.R. kicks it right in the jaw, and it crunches and flies backwards with a kersplash. When it comes up again it's missing the entire lower half of it's face. I guess that zombie won't be biting anyone now. The bullet takes it in the chest and does significant tissue damage, but the zombie is still up and crawling.

A pair of fleshless, clawed hands reach through the railing of the stairs, grasping at Ada's legs. This zombie was apparently under the water under the stairs, and it's older than the others and much meaner. Bone and gristle is about all that's left on this corpse.

Ada yells and jumps off the stairs to avoid the claws, landing with a loud splash in the disgusting water. The zombie seems to be tangled in the railing and rocks back and forth as it tries to free itself.

The water and the large empty space in the room make pinpointing the sound quite difficult, but Hugues is almost certain it's on the same floor, and that means it has to be behind the door. There's no where else.

Fine fine, here's a map of this stupid basement. Grey is stairwell, dark grey is Zone 2, door to Zone 2 is currently closed.

Mitsuo reels from the undead assault, turning the force from the smack to the head into a stumbling half-turn that rips his arm out of Slimy's mouth, sans a fair bit of flesh.

Bringing his pain and frustration under control, he channels it all down through the hilt of his sword. It emanates a soft purple glow, edged in blue-green where the metal meets the air. Mitsuo mouths a few words while the light intensifies. It's time to start whittling down the field. To that end, he grabs and draws his shorter sword, briefly crossing the blades. The light dims as it spreads to the tanto, then continues to strengthen. He points the long sword at Squishy, the shorter at his early-rising companion ZomBum. Finally, he screams at his opponents.

"闇の流れ!"

The colours stream out of the swords, wrapped in shining filaments around a mass of light-sucking black fluid. With terrifying speed they splash against the zombies, hungrily stripping and vaporizing flesh. The zombies are too battered to get out of the way quickly, so the stream continues to bite into their bodies until it finally peters out.

Void attack against Squishy (Weapon:3) and ZomBum (Weapon:1). Discipline +5, tagging Jawless and Headless for +4, and pushing a fate point on "Zompopsicled" for another +2, --// = +9 so it'll split up as follows:

The bum-zombie's twitching form just ceases to exist in several places, like it's being melted away by unseen acid. Pieces fall into the water, and finally the corpse falls over. Whatever was animating it just doesn't have anything left to work with.

The jawless crawling zombie burbles in the water and looks a bit more like swiss cheese but still reaches forward with rotten fingers, dead eyes set on Mitsuo.

Warden Cole (FP:3->2)

Cole draws his saber and steps up behind Squishy. Decapitation didn't do it for the other one, it looks like massive trauma and dismemberment is the way to go. He brings the sword down two handed over and over, cleaving through bone and rotten flesh. At first it has no effect at all on the zombie's struggling, but separating the long bones from the body seems to render them inert.

Attacking Squishy with warden sword, weapon:3. Weapons: ---- + 3 = -1. :suicide: Fate point on Come Hell or High Water to determinedly keep hacking away, Weapons: +--+ +3 = 3. Marginally better.

Sensing imminent doom, Squishy props itself up on what's left of it's elbows and launches itself at the nearest person, who happens to be J.R., determined to get in one last... well it can't bite anymore but one last something. It splatters against the cowboy's chest, covering him in bits of gore and rotten flesh and filthy water.

Squishy goes for a manuever on JR! ++-- +3 = 3, spends it's last fate point on "Angry Dead" for a +5 to inflict temporary aspect: "Covered in Gore", defend with Discipline.

"Dammit! These things just keep coming!" Ada said as she landed in the water. "Where the hell is that beat coming from?!"

Thankfully, Hugues was a few steps ahead of her, and had already determined the source of the beat - behind the closed door. "I'm on it! Jenny, get ready to fry whatever's inside!" In spite of the water's grounding effect and he slowed down movements, Ada's cut was precise: blood from her index finger began to flow, giving her right hand a scarlet tint. As she infused the blood with magical energy, her hand began to emit a similar glow to the one the chain had produced before...similar, but not identical. This one was more vibrant, brighter, alive. Rearing her hand, Ada took aim and clenched her fist, then thrust it forward, palm open, sending a concentrated ball of blood towards the door, blowing it off its hinges due to the force behind the blast.

Blasting the door off its hinges with a touch of Blood Magic. Weapon: 4 attack (taking a hit to my third mental stress box in the process), aimed at the door. The roll result is //++, for a final value of +8!

The door is blown off it's hinges into the blackness of the room beyond. The beat becomes noticeably louder now that the door is gone, but does not stop. No other sound comes from the room.

The light from Cole's crystal does not reach the Storage Room at all. Note that the Storage Room is in another zone for movement/attacking purposes.

The rotting corpse splatters against JR's chest, unfortunately as he was shouting. His mouth fills with corpse bits and muddy water, and his shout turns into spitting and sputtering as he attempts to clear it out. While he is distracted, a second zombie attempts to smash JR with it's arms, but even distracted by a mouth of disgusting stuff JR is easily able to avoid the clumsy attack.

Discipline //+- +2 = 2 to try to avoid the maneuver fails, so JR has Covered in Gore for 3 exchanges. Athletics ++++ +5 = 9 to dodge the attack, JR has literally merged with the Speed Force.

These... weren't Black Court? Oh, goddamnit.

"Why does nobody tell me these things before aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!"

As the zombie under the stairs grabs for Ada, Jenny stumbles back and lands in the freezing water with an ungraceful splash and comes up spluttering, the scream cut short by the shock of the cold water. Jenny takes a moment to stare at the oscillating arms in shock, catching a glimpse of a face that seems strangely familiar, before turning away from the creature.

This was just sick. What kind of... thing could turn people into these monsters? What kind of god would allow these monsters to continue to exist?

What kind of person would she be, if she allowed this desecration of all that was right to continue for one moment longer?

With her face tied into a grimace of anger and fury, Jenny raises her fist high above her before slamming it towards the ground in a brutal motion. As she does so a tremendous blow of force slams into the other room from above, like the fist of an angered deity come to seek his vengeance.

Using Scholarship to Declare a Minor Detail, subject to GM approval; Scratchy "Looks Familiar". Pathos for everybody! If this should be a different skill let me know, but the Scholarship roll was -/// +4 = 3.

Discipline to attack the other room. Summoning 7 shifts of power (Conviction -1) for a 4-stress mental hit, and using 2 of those shifts to make it a zone attack. Discipline roll was +/-/ +5 = 5, but I'm invoking "Inhuman Means Subhuman" and Healing the Sick, Healing the Dead due to the anger at using necromancy to do something this monstrous. Should be W:5, Discipline 9 against everyone in the other room.

I'm allowing this as it is a zone attack. Although you may wish I hadn't.
Steven defends! -+-+ = 0, takes a whopping 14 stress and is immediately taken out.
The Duchess defends! -/++ +3 = 4, attack lands. 10-2 armor = 8, she blows a fate point on My Baby Boy to take it to a 6 and marks 6th box. Note that she had 3 FP from cashing out of the last fight, and her consequence boxes are all still full.


Jenny's force attack slams furiously down on everything in the darkness of the other room. There is a sharp CRACK as a shotgun goes off, and the water rushes out in a rust and filth colored tide, washing over everyone in the basement, human and zombie alike, and knocking them off their feet for a moment.

Am inhuman voice shrieks, not in pain but in fury. The drum finally silences, and the zombies wobble back and forth in confusion. Then it starts up again at triple the tempo. THUNK THUNK THUNK, the beat goes on, and in the light of Cole's crystal a great red stain is visible on the surface of the water, leaking out of the door. Weak choking noises come from the other room, barely audible under the metallic THUNK of the beat and the screaming of the inhuman voice.

"I WILL KILL YOU ALL! HE WAS MINE, MINE!"

The water churns. This place has been a dumping ground for the Black Court for years and years and it sounds like that necromancer is about to raise them ALL.
