I chose Debora in my playthrough. Gotta go with the most 'honest' wife, I'd say. At least she's not full of bullshit! Debora's party speak lines are also gold from start to finish, it is a shame she was unable to raise the kids and teach them to also spout such quality dialogue.

I must be one of the weirdos who didn't feel the need to project onto blank slates, in part because I never really felt like the slates were blank enough to project to.

DQ5's hero is Inigo Montoya. Someone killed his father, this murderer should prepare to die. What additional detail does one need?

Something ironic, I'm certain
All this talk of Dragon Quest V makes me realize how much I'd rather play that than VII.

But no. I must finish this game to honour my love for Dragon Quest, even if the island-by-island plot progression is boring as gently caress.

Honestly, Dragon Quest V just about does everything right. It's one of the best 16-bit JRPGs out there, if not THE best.

I bought IX on a whim since my DS was starving for affection and it's made me into an instant fan. This pretty much made me get IV-VI on impulse and get VIII later down the line. Also is there any reason why in IV magic that hits groups sometimes does jack all except for one or two enemies? It's loving maddening when you have some mid tier magic and you can't even scratch one guy yet the other gently caress next to him gets hit.

Of all the complaints I could make about DQ7, the plot progression is definitely not one of them. It's one of the things that the game really got right.

Magic spells have a chance to miss just like attacks. Makes the magic users a little bit less overpowered.

I've always felt that issues that arose for the heroes to resolve in the DQ games, for the most part, were more basic but allowed for the imagination to accompany it.

Dragon quest 1: Princess kidnapped, wtf mate?!
Dragon quest 2: Castle ransacked, people dead, revenge plotted
Dragon quest 3: your father dies in a fight with a dragon
Dragon quest 4: yet another town massacred, children missing, monsters on the rise, mass hysteria, cats and dogs sleeping together.

These are the ones I remember best because I've played them more times than I can count. I loved them because they weren't overly complex with political undertones and deep depressing emotional drama around every corner. I feel that I can sit down and bash out a few dragon quest games a year because they don't require me to over think everything. I can enjoy a quest that probably has nothing to do with dragons and have fun.

Now there'll be some quiet in this town.
I always felt that Dragon Quest was about the feeling of adventuring more than some kind of overarching plot. As such, I don't mind if people over-think the drama in the games at all. It's all about using your imagination, after all.

Mmm. So basically like the first Monsters game, but with more monsters and a Joker-style system? I'm honestly cool with that, so long as random dungeons make their return - they were what I enjoyed most about DQM2.

I guess we'll see, though, as neither link mentions them yet.

It's not due to the end of May, so I'd hope they'd fix the graphics. (At least add shadows and such so it doesn't look like Terry's walking on air.)

It's already doing booming business on Amazon Japan (it hasn't left their gaming chart's top ten for at least a month), and the 3DS hardware bundle sold out instantly.

Also, Sqenix JP is releasing the book Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Monster Encyclopedia on the same day. It's priced 2520 yen (around 30 bucks) and features over 1,500 monsters. (I've already ordered mine so I can make more Formees on 3DS's Freaky Forms.)

There are very few recipes included in-game, compared to the number of viable alchemy combinations. That is to say, there are many combinations but it only explicitly tells you a small number. You can use trial and error if you want, but it's probably best to just use an alchemy walkthrough.

You don't need to hang onto any items you can buy in a store.

The recipes that you find throughout the world are usually quite useful, although they don't often correspond too the earliest time the item could be made. What I mean is that by the time you find a recipe for a particular item that item might not be that good since you could have made it two towns ago. I highly recommend the alchemy walkthrough on the gamefaqs forums here as its mostly spoiler free and a really great resource.

I've come back to Dragon Quest VIII (or just Dragon Quest as it's called here). I plan to pay more attention to my skill distribution this time around (last time I just pumped everything into one weapon and the unique skill so I never got stuff like Thin Air or bothered with boomerangs), though that actually worked out fine.

I never bothered with the casino crap last time, though I plan to use whips this time around, so I guess if I want the best whip that I'll have to.

I also love it when you run into some monsters and Jessica has charmed them just by entering battle. Seeing a drooling, mesmerized monster never stops being funny and I hate killing them.

If VIII had faster battles on par with the rest of the series, and an instant alchemy pot like in IX, it'd easily be the best game in the series, by my estimation. But for many reasons, it's my favorite DQ.

I had the original Dragon Warrior on NES when I was younger and slowly but surely beat it, what a grindfest. I don't know what made me want to pick it up again but I started playing DW II earlier this week (hadn't seen this thread yet) during downtime at work and it's definitely a lot more fun, especially with more characters, but it's pretty loving hard. I just got the boat and I have no idea what the hell to do and I'm refusing to Gamefaq it. I have been using an online map though since I know the game came with one. I'm currently working to get my main dude a hammer from the boat town and grinding up levels to beat a tower I found on an island. When I found the town from the first game I had this really awesome moment of nostalgia. Also what I think is the underground cave from the first game and what appears to be the ruins of the old end-castle? Also, I feel like it's going to be a huge pain in the rear end to find the 'sunken treasure' or whatever in the 'north cold water', please don't tell me I have to 'search' the entire loving ocean to find this thing...

I remember playing DQ1 and finding the south most row available in the beginning of the game has higher level monsters like scorpions(which are common in the land past the nearby mountain range). Get enough levels on slimes then try my luck on scorpions. When i'm weak, go north where the slimes are and go to the town. Made grinding soooo much easier in the beginning.

The really slow paced battles and loading are almost killing the game for me compared to IV-VI on the fastest battle settings. I kind of actually like the alchemy pot taking it's time since the little chime cracks me up every time. So far the game is fantastic making me wish for another console one that isn't X.

I wonder if we'll be getting an HD re-release of Dragon Quest VIII?

I to VI have already been remade, and VII would need a lot of improvement to be up to today's standards, as well as a new translation. VIII with quicker load times, the option to use the old menu system, and first-person battles would be amazing, especially if they could get it on the Vita as well.

DQ2 is a disaster for these reasons and others (i.e., extremely limited inventory space thanks to undiscardable quest items, monsters in the last area that randomly will wipe you in one round, both spellcasters basically being liabilities). If you like it you will like any game in the series and will like all of them better than DQ2.

If you can beat DQ2 without using a guide, you deserve some kind of award. I'm someone who would never glance at an alchemy walkthrough no matter how many times I play through DQ8 - just seeing people in this thread recommend it seems wrong, but even I have my limits. DQ1+2 on GB was made piss-easy, though.

DQ1 was made way easier so one could zip through it in around eight hours, not like the FC/NES version which required around 30 with all the stupid grinding.

I had to get Enix to accept icons for weapons and armor since they wouldn't budge on the I think 7-character limit on item names.

So far VI has been on and off with me probably because i finished V and some sections could eat a dick like that annoying prince that kept running away and fighting every 3 seconds when exploring underwater. Other than that the characters are pretty awesome even though at first i didn't like them much. The battle music is pretty bad in VI but i doubt anything will top the one in V for me.

Amazing how much useful info you could pack into 2 pages.

Even with that, I remember it being incredibly hard to find certain things.

How many people got introduced to DQ by Nintendo Power giving away the game for free with a subscription? I still remember seeing that commercial for the first time on TV. It was too good to be true. I had to get my parents to call them to make sure I heard it correctly.
