The music was sputtering, the apps took forever to load (and then finally crashed if I tried to exit). It was frankly embarrassing to use.

I'm seriously considering just ditching it and going for a prime/infinity/iPad, but should I just wait for this heavily delayed ICS update first or what?

ICS makes it a whole new device, even one of those unofficial XDA roms. I am using EOS and I would never go back to a Honeycomb device, ever.

I remember. I remember it because Samsung horribly underestimated the market's desire/Android's need for decent hardware and was forced to update a product it hadn't even launched because the iPad 2 left it for dead. I don't think Samsung is even going to bother trying, and if they were going to make a decent effort with a tablet that can compete, we should have seen it before today.

You might see one as a Jellybean flagship device though, not sure how far away that is from going down. Put in the same 'probably/maybe' pile most of these tablets seem to end up in :(

The Xoom LTE upgrades are ending March 31st, I would expect the ICS upgrade to come after that.

There has been evidence that ONLY LTE upgraded Xooms are going to get the update moving forward, so it would make sense for them to delay the push until all the upgrades are done.

Well there's always this:

quote:

Samsung could be lining up announce the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 11.6 tomorrow, bringing the new iPad's resolutionary reign to an abrupt halt.

Pocket-lint has received information from a source close to the matter, claiming that a new Samsung Tab 11.6 will be announced at an event in Texas, but couldn't confirm any other details on the new device.

That chimes nicely with SXSW, in Austin, Texas, where Samsung is lining up a "special announcement" tomorrow, 9 March, at 4pm (10pm GMT).

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 11.6 was first rumoured back in December 2011, claiming to have a screen resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. Although the absolute pixel numbers would then be higher than the new iPad, announced yesterday, the pixel density would be almost the same at 260ppi.

Other expected specs include the 2GHz dual-core Exynos 5250 chip and a design that doesn't swell the tablet much over the size of the Tab 10.1 thanks to the thin bezel, along with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Samsung is no stranger to the 11.6-inch size, as the company already has an 11.6-inch Windows tablet, the Samsung Series 7 Slate, although we'd expect the design to be somewhat slimmer on a consumer Android tablet.

We've asked Samsung to comment, but it hasn't come back to us yet. We'll know whether our tipster was correct very shortly.

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/44823/samsung-galaxy-tab-11-6-launching-tomorrow

BGR also had a story about it back in December.

Yea that seems weird. Seems like it would just needlessly block out people who didn't see a need for the LTE upgrade.

Yea, I remember reading about that back when BGR first broke it. That's what they needed to announce and release at MWC. Not their lovely 10.1 rehashes.

Not motorola, google.

Both the Wifi and LTE Xoom are GEDs and get their updates directly from google. I'm guessing they don't want to maintain a separate code branch for the 3g only Xoom.

It seems much more likely that Google's grand 4.0.4 bugfix is the cause of the delay:

quote:

At this point it's all bugfixing. I know there are some kernel and some telephony issues being looked at, dunno the details.

https://twitter.com/#!/jbqueru/status/175712809684971521

"Telephony issues" most probably refers to the 3g/4g handoff issues the Verizon Galaxy Nexus suffered. Which is to say if they pushed 4.0.3 out to the LTE Xoom like they did with the Wifi, the exact same problem would manifest.

Maybe, but prior to the removal of Toro and Stingray images from Google code page (when they removed CDMA devices) only LTE upgraded Xooms would work with AOSP complied code.

I believe that is still the case on the custom ROM scene. Any AOSP derived ROM for Stingray only works on 4g upgraded Xooms.

That is mental. I can see not including features that only apply to a tablet with 4g, but these are effectively the exact same tablets with 1 difference. It's absurdity on the level of Monty Python.

Why should there be outrage? There have been 9 months send your Xoom into Motorola to get it upgraded to LTE and it's a quick 4 day turnaround to get it back. If you haven't done that, I doubt you are very interested in the ICS upgrade too.

ThermoPhysical posted:

No, it's the same situation as the Galaxy Nexus and Verizon. Google officially supports the LTE Xoom, they just can't distributed the images on their code site due to the CDMA bits necessary.

Really? I'm not trolling here, I am trying to figure this attitude out.

Say you bought your Xoom sans 4g and then realized "poo poo, it's nice and all to have 4g I guess, but I don't really see myself needing it", so you don't bother with the upgrade. This does not dump you in the category of people who don't care about ICS, you might very much like OS updates without caring about 4g.

And now you are poo poo out of luck? C'mon man, it's the same loving device. You write code for 4g and check if the chip is available.

We will see. The only thing we have to go on at this point is AOSP builds are not compatible with non-upgraded Xooms. In order for them to support the 3G only Xooms, Google will have to change the code to fix that prior to the release of ICS. It may happen, but to currently available information we just know that AOSP builds don't work with non-LTE upgraded Xooms so it's not a huge leap to make. As far as Google is concerned, there's one model of Verizon Xoom and it has LTE.

golgo13sf posted:

You asked why all Xoom owner's aren't outraged. I have nothing to be outraged about. I wasn't wronged. If it turns out that ICS requires the LTE upgrade, it's unfortunate for those who didn't upgrade during the free period. I'm sure motorola will probably still upgrade your Xoom for you for a nominal fee though.

They install a hardware module daughter card. Technically, when the upgrade occurs, your Xoom goes from being an MZ600 to an MZ602.

I slightly misspoke before, there is a Team EOS 4.0 AOSP rom out now for the MZ600. It's important to note though that the EOS rom for the MZ600 and MZ602 are completely separate. They are not cross compatible. Unless something changes, two different ROM images will be needed for the MZ600 and MZ602 for ICS. Google DIDN'T have both available when they had the Stingray code posted prior to pulling the CDMA devices so it is unclear that they will be supporting MZ600 going forward.

I bet there's some people out there who don't care at all about LTE but would be interested in ICS, yeah.

Like people who don't want to pay for or can't afford a data plan, or are in non-LTE markets, or aren't willing to give the tablet up for that long. I think it's a safe assumption that you won't need to mail it in to get ICS installed.
