Hey dudes, I decided to remix a Grimes song the other day as she's been getting a lot of attention and I could pretty easily adapt the song to the style I'm going for right now. I'd appreciate it if you could give it a listen and let me know what you think, since this is the first remix I've been happy enough with to show people: http://soundcloud.com/istres/grimes-vowels-space-and-time

plogo posted:The funk box at the sullivan room on Sundays is promoted towards the younger generation of house dancers. There are a ton of youtube videos for it. In a similar vein, the Shelter on Sunday afternoons historically has had really good dancers and a welcoming crowd, although I haven't been to the latest incarnation that has started up a few months ago. Here's an article on the shelter (although be forewarned things have changed a lot since this was written!): http://www.djhistory.com/features/gimme-shelter-2007-0 . If you like the jus-ed etc type of house that crew's clubhouse parties often have good dancers. But really, there are talented dancers at all sorts of events. Awesome, thanks man! I've been dying to see some house dancing in the flesh instead of just on youtube or in the awkward attempts of me and my friends haha. Heard willy joy drop this last uhall concert I went to? http://soundcloud.com/torrotorro/buraka-som-sistema-bababa Was wondering who did the remix, torro torro are a funny group of guys but listening to this not hopped up on four loko its less exciting. http://soundcloud.com/jokers-of-the-scene/jokers-of-the-scene-in-order-3 found this bouncing around soundcloud, had heard of jokers of the scene somewhere. This Remix is super chill and their (Saville and Olins)EP has been great deep house so far. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cgIMxJfgsQ

So I posted a while back about putting together a nu-disco/elektropop show together (Fear of Tigers, The Magician, Tracasseur-type stuff). The problem is I myself am not a dj, nor do I know anyone who could dj such a show...so I'd have to hire someone. Because its a specific genre I'm targetting, I'd want input on the tracklist. Is this considered "bad form" when it comes to hiring a dj? I suppose I could just present it as a particular music night, and not focus on the dj aspect at all, in which case I could just put a solid mix together...? (this is in Toronto, if it matters)

Hiring a DJ to play a specific type of music that normally doesn't, and then including a tracklist probably wouldn't jive well.

Finding someone reliable and skilled might be hard but if you are 'hiring' (ie. going to pay them) and are handling all the promotion and such yourself, it's a pretty sweet deal for anybody you might find. Just advertise and talk to people and listen to their mixes.

also just be willing to collaborate. there's a big difference between handing a dj a tracklist and working with someone who already likes the kind of music you're thinking of. plus, if they're a dj and you're not, there's a distinct possibility you'll find someone with better taste/knows what works on a dancefloor better than you do. No offense or pretentiousness intended but remember that those kinds of things are a dj's job
