From the Assad email cache, this published by al-Arabiya.

This is pretty damning of Nir Rosen. He appears to be informing on the movements of both western journalists and local rebels to someone named Khaled al-Ahmad in the Syrian government. I couldn't quite translate the last part, but it doesn't seem that relevant .

quote:

According to a proven source that met with leaders of groups in Baba Amr today, a large shipment of weapons from Libya will arrive on the coast of one of the neighboring countries in the next three days that's to be smuggled into Syria. It contains sophisticated weapons and is most likely to be at one of the illegal ports in Tripoli. The groups are instructed to ease the clashes with the state to ensure the survival of their fighters until those weapons arrive. Nir Rosen has been able to enter Baba Amr (closed [I think in the sense that it's locked down/surrounded]) and told me that several Western press delegations that entered the area after illegally crossing the Lebanese border, including a French and a German journalist and that the fighters freely roam the streets, especially those calling themselves the Khalid ibn al-Walid Brigade, which proposed the establishment of a special operations room to oversee the checkpoints and the military cordon....

Almost as interestingly, the Guardian decided to censor his name when they published the document.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/mar/14/bashar-al-assad-syria7

edit: There's also this email, which references the one above and refers to the fact that he received cover from this Khaled guy to travel around Syria.

I watched the video before it got taken down, and it was the same launcher as the video 'Destroying an aircraft' ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qKQhQ73xi8 ) that Brown Moses posted. In both it appeared to be a Metis, a Russian anti-tank guided missile. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9K115_Metis

Twin blasts reported in Damascus

quote:

Two explosions have been heard in the Syrian capital, Damascus, according to state television.

"Two terrorist bombings struck Damascus this morning," state television said on Saturday, adding that preliminary reports suggested the bombers had blown up vehicles packed with explosives.

State TV said a number of civilians and security men were killed in the explosions, which took place two days after the first anniversary of year-long uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

The first explosion took place near Customs Department Square in Damascus and the second one took place in the area connecting between Qassaa and Baghdad Street, state TV said.

Residents said one of the blasts occurred near a security building, the Reuters news agency reported.

"I woke up to two massive explosions around 7:30 this morning - one was on Baghdad street less than a mile away from my home," a witness in Damascus told Al Jazeera.

"Relatives closer to the explosion told me their windows were blown out and doors destroyed from the blast," the witness said.

Nir Rosen issued a brief denial over twitter

quote:

The allegations about me are completely untrue. I will be responding in a longer format in 24 hours when I am back online so please wait

I doubt it's completely untrue. I don't think he was spying for the Syrian regime or anything like that, but he was the only journalist allowed to legally enter Syria that wasn't completely constrained in who he was allowed to talk to or where he was allowed to go by the regime. You don't get to do that without having contacts within the Syrian government and its intelligence services, in this case with Khaled al-Ahmad who appears to have been actively advising Assad about how to deal with the revolution. According to the email, and I doubt it's outright fabricated, the information Rosen passed on isn't all that specific, but I don't think a journalist ought to be telling someone working for the government anything, even if they could find out through other sources.

I do think he's a really good journalist (though I don't much like him after that Lara Logan thing), but he definitely needs to account for that.

Yeah you are right thats what it looks like. I wonder where they got it? I wouldnt be surprised if the Syrian army used that missile, maybe with all the defections somehow it found its way into rebel hands. Or maybe a foreign country supplied it?

According to the Wikipedia (which I imagine is accurate in this situation, just by virtue of having video of it), Syria is listed under 'Operators', so they probably just acquired them from the national military.

A lot of people who learn English in the middle east tend to talk like an American movie, I know people who went to all-Arabic schools and every other word is "man" or "dude" or "awesome".

Probably. It also seems like Bashar's father in law is really the one running poo poo.

Oh and look a Middle Eastern despot's guide to building a speech:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/mar/14/bashar-al-assad-syria15

quote:

Islam:

Since the majority of our people are from the Sunni sect and are also religious, I would suggest that the speech must carry an Islamic identity, since much of the opposition raise the flag of Islam it is therefore necessary for the president to snatch this identity from them, but in his own way, by using verses from the Holy Qur'an in the speech.

Confirming that the Islam of the Syrian people is the true Islam by connecting Islam with Syria's principles,

1. Resistance

2. Hostility to Israel, the first enemy of the Muslims,

3. Protection of Palestinian people's rights (real prayers should be in the direction of Jerusalem)

Martyrs:

Here I believe we need the use of an emotional language that touches the hearts and consoles the bereaved families in order to render the figure of the president close to their hearts and maybe we can use phrases and language used by Sayed Hassan Nassrallah to address martyrs and their families as a good example.

It's almost like they're using Islam as a political tool!

I can not seem to escape it, there was a march that turned into a riot around the corner from where I am staying in Istanbul yesterday by Kurds (described in the local press as BDP and PKK supporters, ahem). I was wondering what all the chanting and shouting was about.

It basically means the Turks mount an incursion into Syrian territory ostensibly to secure safe havens for refugees.

A number of problems with that, firstly being Syria would deem it an invasion. The scope for immediate escalation is obvious.

Zones would also provide possible havens for the FSA which would be intolerable for the regime. The havens would become a festering sore for Assad and eventually he would take some sort of action... probably sending the tanks in calling Turkey's bluff. Turkey would be forced to withdraw its troops and watch a possible massacre unfold, or fight the Syrian army on Syrian soil.

Safe havens have the possibility of becoming clusterfucks of mammoth proportions is the short answer.

Not just that, but the "humanitarian corridor" that has been discussed would essentially cut off Syria from the sea. That's something that Assad has been adamant on keeping, which goes along way to explain the brutality seen in Homs and Hama.

Couldn't NATO use this as an excuse to directly intervene in the conflict?
