I love what Cooper says after he's been shot -- "All things considered, being shot is not as bad as I always thought it might be…as long as you can keep the fear from your mind. I guess you could say that about most anything in life. It's not so bad, as long as you can keep the fear from your mind..." It's simple, but I find myself remembering that message from time to time, and it does work to comfort you.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

So I started watching this on Netflix ever since I heard a few goons talk about how good it was. I'm on Season 2 Episode 6, and I must say, this is probably the weirdest loving show I've ever seen.

In a good way, I hope? Because I've seen much weirder stuff on Adult Swim, but hated it. I just noticed the entire first season of The Killing is available on my cable On Demand package, for free. The central premise sounds similar to Twin Peaks, and I heard it started out solid but alienated fans by the end. I'm curious about giving it a chance. Any thoughts?

Yeah for the love of god NOBODY should ever watch The Killing under any circumstances. It was such a godawful piece of horrendous crap. It is easily the worst television program that I ever bothered to watch an entire season of. And the fact that when you're watching The Killing, you want to keep going if only to get some satisfaction out of the show only to find that there is NO satisfaction being offered in any way whatsoever by the end of the season is part of what makes it so insidiously frustratingly horrifically awful. In addition to it being poorly written, poorly acted (with the exception of one single character), and shot in the most drab and boring possible cinematography. Ironically, the best modern Twin Peaks imitation I've probably seen lately was a short-lived mid-season replacement network show called Happy Town, that actually managed to capture some of the weird quirky supernatural mystery of Twin Peaks (albeit in a mostly superficial way). And it's quite the injustice, because Happy Town was canceled midway through its first season after like 8 episodes, whereas a piece of poo poo like The Killing actually got somehow renewed for a second season through what must have been some dark deal with the devil.

I just started to watch this show, and am up to episode 103. It's a great show, but it's very difficult for me to watch for extended periods of time. It just makes really incredibly uneasy and uncomfortable if I watch it for longer than an episode at a time.

I just stumbled upon a few youtube clips of this show (The Black Lodge bits from the finale and Maddy's death) and was reminded how powerfully awesome it was at its best. I saw it in its original run while I was in high school, but haven't seen it since I binged through show about 10 years ago, so it might be time to give it another go. Especially since I've seen Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive and The Straight Story in the meantime. I grew up about 20 minutes away from the North Bend/Snoqualmie area where the establishing shots (the waterfall, hotel, mountains, some storefronts) and some of the outdoor shooting was done, but when the show aired, I was living on the East Coast, so part of the appeal of the show for me was a bit of nostalgia/homesickness, and I loved that the show's Pacific Northwest setting came through even in such details as Cooper's name. Since it's fresh in my mind, Maddy's death was just stunning. Normally violent scenes on TV are either fairly sanitized, or run to the other extreme of being gruesome, but a bit cartoonish and silly. Either way, it's a bit distancing, and when a pretty girl is involved, there's usually this layer of lurid titillation to boot. But Lynch starts ratcheting up the dread from the very beginning (how he can make doorframes menacing is a mystery, but he even does it in The Straight Story), and from the moment Maddy appears, it's just relentlessly brutal and terrifying, to the point that her death becomes a relief. Leland/Bob even cracks wise at the end without deflating the tension. On top of that, this scene cements that at the heart of this quirky show with its adorably mannered characters lies an utterly hideous and repulsive scenario of the worst sort of domestic violence. Powerful stuff, even if the show fell apart almost immediately afterwards. And yes, for you youngins, Twin Peaks was huge in 1990, but burned out pretty quickly. Part of the reason for the networks pushing up the murder reveal was that the public mania for all things Twin Peaks disappeared over the season break, and the networks wanted a big event to hype to try to drum up all the early excitement. Edit: oh right, spoilery stuff. Sometimes hard to remember for such an old show and cultural touchstone. Apologies. cemaphonic fucked around with this message at 08:03 on Jun 5, 2012 |

Yeah, I remember, over the years I had only caught a couple episodes here and there and now that I've just finished watching S2 E1 on Netflix, it definitely makes more sense (in a David Lynch way) than I remember.

I love when this thread gets a new post. I just watched Inland Empire by David Lynch, it had a lot of the same themes as Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive. It was definitely the most difficult to grasp of his films. Non-linear is an understatement. It has Grace Zabriskie (Sarah Palmer) in it, and is truly horrifying. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a hardcore Lynch fan. It took me 5 tries before I could get through the whole thing (3 hour run time), and was so confusing.

Inland Empire, for me, is a rollercoaster ride. I don't really try and make sense of anything about it, and I don't even know if there is a valid interpretation at all, but when I sit back and let the tone and mood wash over me it's an absolutely amazing experience. I wish Lynch would make more films.

I'm a Lynch fan (although I prefer his more linear narratives like Twin Peaks), and it took me at least three attempts to make it through Inland Empire, back when it was streaming on Netflix. It's just an exhausting, draining experience, and a very unsettling one as well -- even by his standards. I think a Goon in a past thread compared it to being trapped in someone else's nonsensical nightmare, and that was a solid description.
