Closer To The Edge trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QldZiR9eQ_0 The trailer opens with a church and racing bikes going past and that's the thing in a nutshell. It's about the Isle on Man TT race and the people who have a passion for that race that would make the Taliban think these people are a bit obsessed. The Manx TT is a bit different from your average biking race that it takes place over a massive 37 mile track that's just roads through hills, forests and villages. Instead of a stretch of sand and soft barrier around it there are trees, walls, hillsides and barbed wire fences. If you crash you'll probably die and 237 racers have done so since the first race 100 years ago. That's more then died climbing Mount Everest. The main star of the movie is Guy Martin who looks like a young Mel Gibson playing Wolverine. He's incredibly likable and just a little insane at the same time like most of the people who are interviewed. Like a Werner Herzog movie you shake your head at how crazy these people are yet at the same time there is a tiny bit that's convinced it's in fact you who are mad for not doing what they do. And of course there is some breathtaking footage of the races.

I've been wanting to watch this for quite some time now but haven't been able to find it on any digital rental sites. Does anyone have a (preferably free) link to Inside Job for my viewing pleasure? Also, Children Full of Life was outstanding, and at such a short run-time, there's really no reason to skip it.

I literally finished Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey this instant and it's one of the best, most uplifting films in general I've ever seen. It's in the New Releases section of Netflix so while you're decompressing from your Dear Zachary's and pedophiles, go watch this and feel hopeful about humans again. I basically cried the whole way through it because Kevin Clash is such a remarkable, humble and really wonderful human being. It touches a soft spot for anyone that grew up with Sesame Street and all the rest of Henson's works. Good God, just go watch the drat thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRotWuJNIQA&feature=youtube_gdata_player

1964 BBC documentary "The Great War". This exceptional documentary conveys the blind insanity which came to define the battlefields of the Somme, Marne and Verdun - and which proved so shocking that in a psychosis the world could only relive it twenty years later. The hauntingly beautiful soundtrack and poetry form a strange connection with the viewer. One feels there is a sacred lesson here; humanity will unite in peace, or break it all to pieces.

The Red Chapel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aQRC_4LheY Three danish comedians, two of which are Danish Korean, one of which disabled, travel to North Korea under guise of being Danish Communists on a tour mean to share Danish culture with North Koreans. It alternates between hilarious and uncomfortably creepy as the trio learns firsthand how that state controls media and public exposure in a world where nothing happens in the countryside and disabled people don't exist. Saw it at the LA Film Fest two years ago and in my opinion it stole the show. Very unique.

Might be out of left field, but I liked Towncraft a documentary about the tight-knit punk music scene from Little Rock, Arkansas, in the 80's and 90's. It's not straight edge but deals a lot with the punk, DIY, and high school music scenes commonly associated with straight edge.

I grew up with Grover and Big Bird as my big favorites before Elmo really stole the spotlight, and for a long time as I saw the series as an adult I hated Elmo's character in the show. Watching Kevin Clash perform as the puppet and just pour his whole heart into the little monster just makes me so happy and it was enough to completely turn my opinion of Elmo around. He's a great person and he is great how he inspires and teaches. Of course, I was bawling my eyes out during the clips from Jim Henson's memorial. Full-on waterworks. Thank you for mentioning this was on Netflix streaming, I've been wanting to watch it since I first heard about it (which was regrettably after it had left theaters).

I've been looking for BATTLE STRIPES (UK SkyOne Granada 13x30 minute episodes 1999) which I caught a few episodes of in 2000 ish, and remember it was quite good. It's a documentary following a group of aspiring platoon sergeants through their final training. Any help finding it would be most welcome.

Here's a chance to give back for all those docs you've been watching for free. A filmmaker is running a kickstarter campaign to fund his doc, The Audacity of Louis Ortiz. It's about a Puerto Rican guy (Louis) from the Bronx whose life's been turned upside down for having an uncanny resemblance to Barack Obama. The story was recently featured on This America Life. Looks like it could be pretty good: Click the image to watch promo trailer on kickstarter. Would've been nice if the dude uploaded this to youtube so I could've embeded in thread...

I watched a great documentary about a group of homeless people living in an abandoned railway tunnel in some American city a while back, but I can't remember what it's called. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? They had built small houses out of cardboard and other scavenged materials, and I think one of them had a dog?

Just to let folk know that the youtube links posted a few pages back for The Hunt for Britain's Paedophiles are dead, however you can still watch it here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2jg0z_the-hunt-for-britain-s-paedophiles_people I've only just started watching it. It's very interesting for me as I've been involved in a few paedophile raids, mostly as an evidence gatherer. I'm very lucky I never saw any hardcore stuff as I was mostly seizing computers and cameras. I did see some hosed up stuff though, like rooms used to abuse kids in, all wired up with cameras and CCTV style stuff. Urgh. I knew a fair few detectives whose job it was to sift through all the images. When they talked about it they just looked really and world weary. It's a really poo poo job, I could never ever do it.

If you have LoveFilm Instant, I'll honestly suggest Shaking Hands With The Devil which follows the UN General with his men who tried his best against the almost impossible odds to fight and save people from the Rwandian Genocide of 1994. The documentary follows him trying to come to terms with his inner demons and with interviews with other UN and Journo colleagues as he revisits the country.

The People's Cartoonist (2001) Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA8E6FC8DA8A1ECB4 An anime nerd tries his hand at making an animated short in one year. He's kind of a jackass and there's plenty of unintentional comedy. I recently watched this and found it really funny, it's a perfect snapshot of a very specific kind of geek. Lots of cringeworthy moments. It starts slow but once you get deeper into his world it's pretty revealing. Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtdFIXS8S8o

Non Serviam posted:Comic sans! I'm watching this now, just finished part one, and considering the subject matter I'm a little amazed at how women are shot in this film. As the narrator talks about how vulnerable the women are there is some 'various anonymous women in public places' footage playing. The camera lingers on their asses, boobs and midriffs. When a woman appears on the screen the camera pans up from her feet and often lingers on her rear end before finally going up to her face. Most of the woman don't know they are being filmed, which adds another layer of creepy to the whole thing. Baring in mind this is all going on as a man narrates how terrible it is they are being sold as sexual objects

I understand the desire for more eyeballs, and it is a good topic upon which many eyes should be laid and all that, but it just kind of sits here. GBS is supposed to be general topics that get discussed for a while and then move on, and we have Cinema Discusso for extended, sustained discussion of this sort of thing. Maybe GBS could use another thread, but we should give it a while. And actually, now that I'm thinking of it, I'm going to move it to CD so it lives/gets archived/whatever there. For future generations to gaze upon.
