That was a BAD business decision!
I believe Kanbei's initial island has enough cities to win him the map. If you destroy his infantry, yeah, you'll basically win (since the island base doesn't really produce infantry for loading, since the island's just so small), but for the time limit, you should just capture all you can.

Or Max it up for the finish, but meh.

Fair enough, let's do that then. This is going to be a bit longer than the other two highlights reels as I feel there's a bit more to show off in terms of strategic differences. Still going to be shorter than a regular post, though (and - gasp! - I'm not going to bother with arrows)

First up, may as well mention that I managed to tweak my strategy on Mighty Kanbei! as Andy to deliver a 7-day perfect score.

But now it's time for Maximum Force.

For what it's worth, this (and the Andy perfect score mentioned above) are on the A-Route save, hence the mission number being 10 rather than 11.

Day 1

First up, I'm actually going to attack this bomber turn 1. May as well, given that as Max I can one-shot it and not have to worry about it damaging my missile launcher or something.

The usual capturing antics.

Day 2

Kanbei moves his air units to meet mine.

And again, with Max we have the luxury of actually decent damage and not having to worry about the threat of Kanbei's counterattacks.

Woo.

Day 3

This time the T-Copters don't have to worry so much about taking damage.

So I can clean up the air force with no real harm done.

One disadvantage of Max here though is that, without Sami's extra movement, I can't reach that island in one turn with a T-Copter. I can live with that though.

And let's get an attack in on that "north central island" tank.

Day 4

B copter attacks Kanbei's N.C.I. infantry to make it basically impossible for Kanbei to win (again, at this point Sami was not in a good position B copter wise), and the T copters start distributing infantry.

Sticking that fighter out in the middle of the ocean again because why not.

Day 5

Finishing off that infantry.

T copters head back to pick up new passengers and I send my fighter in to pick off one of Kanbei's own. Will the decoy trick work on the AAs again?

Sadly, no. Because this time Max's fighter had already taken some damage, it couldn't survive even one attack from Kanbei's AA. So the other two didn't get dragged around the map trying to follow it. Shame.

Day 6

Ah well, at least it charges up Max Force.

Which allows me to finish clearing out the N.C.I.

And that in turn lets me start landing infantry. Yep, this time we're going for a property capture win. Well, HQ capture's out given we can't budge those AAs now.

Day 7

Got enough guys up here now to win this in two turns.

Day 9 (not much point in Day 8 shots)

I've built up quite the B copter force. Let's see if we can do some damage on this island, maybe get that Power score up to a perfect.

The Yellow Comet APC is pretty much the most hilarious unit in this game.

Could only take down two units. But given the APC was loaded, maybe that counts as three...? Oh well, we'll capture the last two properties and win this.

Now, at the end of the mission, we get Kanbei's standard "By my sword!" spiel that you saw in the Sami run, but because in this timeline we didn't beat Kanbei Arrives! fast enough, we also get some extra dialogue from Sonja (or rather, this is the standard dialogue and the "extra" dialogue is the three bonus missions we'll be starting on shortly):

You know this is because you never let me finish what I'm trying to tell you!
But... But... Sonja, I...
And one more thing. Orange Star's objective is not to conquer Yellow Comet.
Are you mad, daughter? They were...
Father! Shooting first and asking questions later is not a good strategy.

To be fair, the same could be said of both sides in the OS-YC conflict.

If you were suddenly attacked, you'd return fire, too!

I mean, didn't we technically fire the first shot when we attacked those rocket launchers? Oh, well. Not going to complain about not being held responsible for this war.

Well, I...
If you leave them be, I'm sure they'll depart without any trouble. No more attacking, Father! Understood?
Um...
Hmm... The Orange Star Army... They're not all that I imagined they would be.

Hey, hey, that was deliberate. I didn't want to have to play through your fiddly awkward fog-of-war bonus missions three times.

As that's the case... it's up to me to act.

Ooh. Act on what? Act... on "him"?

Property capture victory screen this time, since I actually had to take 15 properties rather than cheese the HQ. I still didn't manage to get that perfect power score, though :(.

But it was a day shorter than the Sami run. No rank up to Grey Hen in this timeline, probably because I've only played ten missions on the A-Route. And because I didn't complete the bonus criteria on this run, we get dumped straight into Green Earth!

Home of the best character...

... with the scariest face. But that's all ahead of us, because first we've got some showdowns with Sonja to take care of.

Oh, don't worry. We can't even manage to hold on to enemy COs for five minutes, even when we capture their HQs.

Father, you hush! There's something I need to investigate. And, I need first-hand intel to formulate a strategy.
But, but...
Ok, Father, take it easy. How's this? At the first sign of danger, I'll retreat. Ok?

Wait... at the first sign of danger? This is a war zone. Danger is kind of the first thing you see.

You must promise to avoid unnecessary risks. Understood?
Of course, Father. I'll be back.

Well, I'm here. Can't say the same for Andy or Sami, though.

Just thought I'd do an animation of this as a demonstration of how the mission title actually appears on screen (the little musical sting that accompanies it is number 04 on this list - couldn't find it on Youtube).

And here's the screen you get to see at the start of every day. Being honest, these are both by-products of the thing I actually wanted to animate, which is Max's text scrolling on to a new "page" without user input:

Hey, Paul! I can't find Andy or Sami! The two of them have disappeared!

Yeah, that's weird. It's not like them to just wander off. Well okay, it's not like Sami to just wander off.

Huh? What the...? I'm surrounded! Are those Yellow Comet troops? Man, I've been set up!

Uh-oh.

So yeah, welcome to the Sonja bonus missions. Beat Kanbei fast enough, and his daughter decides that you're worthy of closer evaluation. We do Max first, then Sami and finally Andy. All three missions take place in Fog of War. We've only got twelve troops to work with here - and two of those are indirects. It's going to be a rough ride.

As you've probably seem from our previous Fog of War missions, generally the easiest way to deal with them is to go for an HQ capture - it certainly beats hunting around for every last unit. Hmm... there are a lot of circles of mountains dotted around on this map, with woods inside them. It's a reasonable bet that there's some indirects hiding in those woods.

I mean, look at this, we've found one already. Although hmm... it doesn't want to tell us how many hit points it has. Well, that's all part of the package you get with our new opponent...

Paul.Power's CO Notes: Sonja Sonja's Theme
Sonja's main gimmick is that she can see further in Fog of War: she gets +1 vision range as stardard. Her CO Power, Enhanced Vision, does exactly what it says on the tin - an extra +1 vision range, and - crucially - the ability to see into forests and reefs even when not standing next to them. She also hides the HP counts of her units from her opponents, replacing them with a "?". Sonja's weakness is that she's unlucky. Whereas regular COs get 0 to +10 luck points on top of expected damage, and Nell gets 0 to +15, I think Sonja's range is -5 to +5 (it was in AW2, at least). All of this does make Sonja a rather situational CO, but put her in her element and she's a handful.

Background/Personality: Kanbei's daughter, but it's safe to say that she didn't get her brains from him. Probably the smartest character in the game, and a firm believer in the importance of good intel gathering, Sonja is key to working out why the hell we're all suddenly at war with each other and unravelling the mystery of "him". She's got some issues in other areas though: she can be pretty snooty, and I can't help but feel sorry for Kanbei a bit at times when she criticises him (granted it's usually deserved). Arguably her over-analytical nature is the cause of her bad luck, with an inability to go with the flow at times. She has something of a rivalry with Sami that'll be expanded on in the next couple of missions.

Of course, Max doesn't really care about how many hit points his opponent has, since quite often it's going to end up being 0 anyway.

Taking out that rocket launcher with one tank and moving the other into a forest north of it.

APC loads up with the other mech and heads to a forest, recon rolls north to see what it can see.

Well, we've got an infantry unit, at the very least. Wouldn't be surprised if it had some friends hiding in the woods, though. Anyway, may as well try to capture these cities.

Splitting the remainder of the forces up. No particular logic behind it: mostly I just sent the forces on the left to the left, and the forces on the right to the right.

Erm... yes?

I'm here to evaluate your combat prowess.

Geez, when I started out on this Advisor lark, no-one told me there were going to be spot checks.

drat, Sonja looks smug when she's doing well.

Trollface levels of smug.

Day 2

Let's see if we can do something about that. We know there's a rocket launcher up there somewhere - my guess would be the forest north-west of the northern YC city.

One of my tanks starts heading towards it, spotting one of Sonja's tanks in the process. Meanwhile my two infantry units retreat and join.

Not looking so smug now, eh Sonja? Good ol' Max medium tanks.

Max's light tanks can also pile on the hurt. His recon doesn't quite finish off this infantry unit though.

So here's our first real taste of why ? health can be a hassle. I mean, we know right now that that infantry unit only has 1HP. But it's easy to lose track of, especially in the fog. And imagine if that infantry unit was a medium tank, and you weren't sure if it was at 1HP or 10HP. Do you try sending in a mech to finish it off?

Random aside, this is an interesting difference between the AW1 and AW2 Sonja missions - not so much that Sonja changes between the games (she does a bit, she gets counterattack boosts added to her arsenal), but the difference between playing against her when she's an AI (in AW1) and playing as her against the AI (in AW2). In AW2's Campaign, you never get to see the whole "HP-hiding" mechanic in action - obviously she doesn't hide the HP from herself, and the AI you're fighting neither knows nor cares about such niceties. But the AI also doesn't care about Fog of War, either - so in AW1, AI Sonja's vision range doesn't really matter because the AI's vision range is infinite. Saying that, Enhanced Vision's still a serious issue when you fight against AI Sonja - now she can basically see the entire map (forests and reefs included) for a turn.

Anyway, enough of that. Let's move everyone else up. My indirects are pretty exposed, I'll admit - but the plan is to use them as a kind of -lite. After all, we're not going to get much use out of them as Max.

Aaand yeah.

Owch. But I'd rather it was these guys than my tanks or recon.

Day 3

No, I'm not making a crying rocket launcher gif as well ;).

Anyway, during Sonja's turn I heard some footsoldiers moving around in the darkness, so I'm sending a couple of spare units back to guard the HQ area. Nothing more embarrassing than the AI stealthily capturing your HQ.

We're going to leave those two tanks alone for now, and focus on destroying Sonja's rocket launcher here - after all, it presents a big threat to my column of units on the left. First of all I need to spot it...

... and then I can take it out.

Following that up with the definition of overkill, as my medium tank lines up a 150% shot on that 1HP infantry unit from last turn.

Even mountains weren't going to save that guy.

Everyone else moves up. I've temporarily unloaded my mech here, just in case something happens to my APC. I know the APC's in a forest, but...

... that isn't going to help us (wait, why the heck can we see Sonja's petticoat?)

And there we go, Sonja can see the APC - and fire on it without needing a "spotter". The other tank heads south and attacks that mech that I'd started moving back towards my HQ.

Day 4

Hmm. At least the APC survived its ordeal. And we've got a CO Power of our own.

Well said, Max.

First let's load this APC up again and get it away from the action. It's our main victory ticket, after all.

Then we can head in and punish that naughty tank.

While that's going on, my other tanks starts checking the forests to the north. This one looks clear...

So does this one.

Arty and medium tank follow up.

Now then. In the south I'm wondering whether it's worth the risk of attacking that southern tank.

Well, you only live once.

Hmm... not ideal, that.

Especially not when Sonja gets to finish the job on her turn. But hey, I don't think that mech died in vain. It might just have given our HQ-defending infantry a better chance of surviving.

Meanwhile in the north, looks like Sonja's got some more rockets.

Day 5

Hmm... I think there's only one forest in range of that tank that we haven't checked out yet...

Yep, there we go. And it looks like the rocket launcher brought a friend.

Is this a private party, or can anyone come?

Recon knocks rocket launcher down to 4HP, and turns out that the tank was one that I'd damaged earlier, so it went down like a chump.

Sonja still has more tanks up her sleeve, though...

Day 6

Urgh. I think that's three units now? Goodness knows what this is doing to my technique score. Hopefully I won't lose any more, though.

Anyway, time for some cleanup. My recon finishes off the rocket launcher...

... and my remaining light tanks work together to destroy that new interloper.

Hopefully there won't be any more nasty surprises.

My other units start working their way along the road.

Back at HQ, it's fairly quiet. Wonder if anyone's going to show up soon?

Speak of the devil, it's the 5HP tank that just killed my mech. The extra attack I did on it seems to have worked - it can only deal 2HP of damage now...

Day 7

... which of course, gets nicely healed up by the HQ.

Nothing much to report this turn: my forces just close in on Sonja's HQ without running into any enemies.

And at my own HQ, it's déjà vu all over again.

Day 8

Pretty quiet over here. I wonder how much stuff Sonja has left? There's that tank by my HQ, and this one footsoldier I keep hearing running around the place. Anything else?

We'll have a look round in a second, but first let's get set up on the HQ.

Searching for units, my 9HP tank runs into an artillery.

Hey, there.

The other units move up a bit.

Hmm, this time I managed to knock a hit point on the counterattack. I guess if this kept up forever, Sonja's tank would eventually die.

Day 9

HQ capturing, and looks like that arty decided to try and retreat to a city for health.

Nah.

Since I'm nearly done here, may as well see if I can chip another hit point off this tank.

Woo. Although I lost a hit point myself in the process.

Which allows Sonja to knock my infantry down to 7HP on her turn.

Day 10

It's all a bit academic though.

Oh, hi. I don't suppose you could explain what the hell is going on here?

You compensate for this weakness with a predilection for direct combat. In areas where you can attack with multiple units, you're a titan.

So... tell us something we don't know.

Wha...?
In tight quarters, though, you tend to become a target for indirect fire. Try pulling your foe out into wider terrain: you'll like the results. Or is strategy your department, Paul?

Well, yeah, I suppose it is. Um. Thanks for the advice, I guess?

Who... Who are you?
It's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Sonja. I'm a Yellow Comet CO. I've taken the liberty of separating you from your companions. So, now...
Hey! (yawn) What the...? So... sleepy... Zzz...

Max? Max, this really isn't the time to fall asleep.

Sweet dreams, Max.

Hang on, what? Ugh, it's bad enough that the enemy COs keep getting away after we capture their HQs. But it's really come to something when they manage to capture our COs and drug them into a stupor.

I guess I'm just glad Sonja didn't think to slip some sleeping pills into my tea.

Hmm indeed. I was half-expecting him to be saying "Zzz" here. Anyway, S-Rank again - we were a bit short of perfect on Technique, but nothing too severe. No rank-ups to report, sadly. Maybe next time. Speaking of which...

Presumably they would go feral and revert to the natural state of an undomesticated CO in the wild, such as we have observed in Olaf and Kanbei. Design Maps Glitch Part 2: Maps of all different sizes

Ask anyone who's played any three of the Wars World Advance Wars games about Design Maps and they'll tell you that there's only one size, 30x20. This is quite bad for AW1 in particular because there's no way to block spaces like pipes in AW2 and AWDS. Fortunately, the Design Maps glitch can fix this problem.

Mission 2, first time you... what (I edited it beforehand)

Much like you can edit buildings in the normal Design Maps, you can edit them in campaign maps, too. Kanbei (?) in particular shows off his excellent base acquisition skills and gets a landlocked port.

Only in the glitched Design Maps mode can you get units on top of each other, and yes, this can happen with enemy units.

Now, is Kanbei really here? Or is it...

...Nell, what are you doing here? And why can I attack you?

Maybe Eagle's decided to invade Blue Moon?

:aaaaa: She isn't moving her forces, so let's capture her HQ to see what's going on-

Yes, we have 2 HQs now. But why stop at two?

Now we have three! But what does this have to do with designing maps?

While I was in the glitch mode, I saved the map in a Design Maps slot, and going back to it results in an editable 18x12 map! You can't do this normally until Days of Ruin, so this glitch can be quite handy!

Taking the glitch to VS to see what the default COs are there, it isn't as interesting as it was in Campaign.

Olaf for Yellow Comet...

And Sami for Green Earth. These are also default if you start a 4-player map normally.

One glitch later, I decide to put a larger than normal map in and save it. What happens afterwards?

Glitches abound! Even trying to select or press R on any of these freezes the game!

These in particular can't be attacked at all...

And these two never crash and burn, despite their lack of fuel. After ending my turn, I find out that Max has a normal Md. Tank. What does he do with it?

:what: Typical AI...

Glitchtanks aren't very sturdy, but their main attribute is resetting the game when attacked. Not crashing, resetting. Why don't we attack one of those Recons on the sea?

:pwn: It still gets damaged, but the tide sweeps them off the screen...

Oddly enough, the AI can attack my Glitchtillery near his HQ, and it actually plays an animation correct! Yeah, right, Md. Tanks aren't that weak.

The unit screen is even messed up!

I think I've covered just about everything you can do with this, I think the only thing that's left is to crack jokes about the Campaign with it. So I leave you with a shot of Olaf's Tank getting swept away.

I was just taking a look at the Advance Wars By Web site, and I noticed this map came up first thing on the maps list. Is there an associated thread somewhere (i.e., some sort of organized 'let's play Advance Wars by Web' thing), or is this just something one of the forumites did for funsies?

Well, BrooklynBruiser has been trying to organize a game between the three LPs for awhile now, so the answer is "kinda"

Yeah, he actually beat me on that map earlier (hey, I never claimed to be that good at Versus. Exploiting AI derpiness is one thing, taking on a human quite another ;))

Yeah, there's nothing official, but we've got an IRC channel (#AdvanceWars on synIRC).

Design Maps Glitch Part 2.5: Random Glitch Units

I experimented a bit more with my newfound ability to glitch large maps, and I think the results were pretty funny at times. I hope this doesn't make this page too image-heavy... :ohdear:

This is something I never thought was possible, until I stumbled into this. The turn order really does go like that ingame! Usable for a mock campaign, maybe?

Meet the Wockacopter, a copter that has massive amounts of ammo, CO meter and fuel, but can't do anything with them. How much CO meter?

The GIF actually doesn't show Olaf's original power meter :cripes:, but his power meter was empty before launching this attack. Gotta love glitch units!

Hilariously enough, this behaves like an APC in every respect: it takes damage like one, has the move sprite of one, it resupplies... but it can't move. The armor doesn't even do anything!

This one is just plain invincible, how boring... (There's also one that's classified as an Md. Tank, but has no fuel or ammo. It's invincible too. How are they invincible? You can't attack them at all!)

This seems a bit unfair. Just a bit.

Unfortunately, this froze the game. The blue G-Copter (what, it's a glitch T-Copter) is that "infantry" from the previous image.

That's it for now, I'll poke around the game's map with this some more, but if I could get my hands on a save that has all the maps in the game unlocked, I'd be able to find more...

Wait, so Sonja is kidnapping high ranking military personnel and forcing them to wage actual lethal warfare for the sake of getting basic information that she could probably just ask for?

Why are people ok with this? What is this universe? If one of Yoshihiko Noda's children drugged and kidnapped General Petraeus, and engaged his forces in a particularly brutal campaign of attrition in which thousands of American troops died, I'm pretty sure the reaction would be more severe than "Are you sleeping on the job? David you silly goose!"

This is why Advance Wars is one of the greatest pieces of black comedy in videogames.

Basically, soldiers see their COs the same way we see cast of Advance Wars.

Thanks :). Don't worry about the images, although yeah, I'd like to be on a fresh page for the next update. Should be up this evening, with any luck.

That was a BAD business decision!
By the way, Paul.Power, out of interest, who's your favourite/least favourite CO to play as, whether it be in Advance Wars or Black Hole Rising? Different playstyles need different COs, and all that... (although Hachi's good for any of them :v:)

Hmm. That's a tricky one for Advance Wars 1, because I haven't really used all the COs that much (wasn't all that long ago that I finally got round to unlocking Eagle and Sonja). I guess Sami is my favourite, narrowly leading Max and Grit. Olaf for least favourite, I guess.

Black Hole Rising is easy, though: Sensei ;). Probably Grit for No. 2. Sami, Jess and Colin are all pretty fun. It'd be an easy shot to say that Adder's my least favourite CO, but honestly I don't know if I've played as him enough to be certain.

Serial readers of the AW2 thread might have noticed that I had some of my longest hiatuses with Colin, Kanbei and Drake - which is odd in some ways, because for me they're the "middling" COs for their three nations - with Grit, Sensei and Jess being my favourites and Olaf, Sonja and Eagle my least favourites. Maybe I just wanted to get those missions over with.

While I'm here, may as well list my favourite COs musically (italic indicates an AW2 CO):

1. Sami, 2. Nell, 3. Jess, 4. Sturm, 5. Andy, 6. Drake, 7. Sensei, 8. Lash, 9. Grit, 10. Hawke

At the Heart of the city is an Alien horror, so vile and so powerful that not even death can claim it.
While we're at it, what would you consider your favorite Advance Wars game?
