I've never seen the point of Counter. Supers can tank the damage and come out stronger for it, Reals can just avoid it. And unless you're powerful enough to consostently OHKO mooks, you'll be sitting through their attacks anyway.

Also I always loved how they did the 'It's name is?!' scene.

Could you perhaps give us a list of available skills, since we're voting on those? Even being familiar with the games, I'm having a hard time remembering what is in this game.

And if it was stuck in an update somewhere, I forgot about it and would be a pain to look for.

I feel the same way. It's nice if it goes off, but I would never try and count on it or add it to someone who didn't already have it.

Hit and Away and EN Save on Kouji always worked out pretty well for me.

I know when the show was first announced and they showed off the character art, everyone was like "Whoa, a lady Gundam pilot as a hero" but then it turns out he's voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya, who actually has a pretty deep voice. I think they made him really feminine (even by modern Gundam standards) just to gently caress with people. His civilian outfit includes a granny sweater for cryin' out loud.

It can be pretty good on inbetween mechs like the Altiesen that are tanky and dodgey, but not as much as the specialists.

I cannot begin to describe how much I love Mazinger Z. It just has this presence to its shape and motion that makes it live up to the legacy it has. I absolutely love the little panels that light up for Breast Fire.

I've been dithering like a beast on whether or not to get a PSP/Vita and Z2 (and 2.2) for a little while now even though I speak pretty much no Japanese. Watching these beautiful little animations makes it even harder to resist the urge to spend unwisely.

To be perfectly fair, that's actually a reasonably common thing to happen in SRW. Some attacks create a whole stage for them. Need I remind you of Ialdabaoth and his endless mountains, used only for the sake of dramatically destroying?

Hey now, Z2-1 is better about this than a lot of SRWs. After all, it's the one time it still makes sense that it makes sense to punch things to the moon while you're on the moon.

Yeah, but they don't do it with what would be just something basic to poke with when things are out of melee range. Terrain coming out of nowhere for an attack is pretty bog-standard anyway.

That just reminds me of the best Z1 quote, with Gym telling the Aquarion people to just quit punching the moon already.

I don't think there will possibly be a better quote in SRW until we get the obviously incoming seiyuu joke in Z2.2 when you have Amuro fight Ribbons.

I personally like Kouji with Support Attack, but I like Support Attack in general. He needs E-Save for sure, and after that you can't really go wrong because Mazinger is amazing. I love how it gets to shine in this game after a decade or so of being the robot you deal with until they unlock Mazinkaiser.

Mazinger Z in this game is just great in general. It will consistently be amazing in both offense and defense throughout the entire game. I can't wait to see how much more ridiculous it'll be in the next game.

Personally, I always went with Support Attack, E Save, Will Limit Break, and Continuous Action or however y'all are calling those abilities. Kouji at 170 morale is just insane, and you'll easily hit max morale with him if you play your cards right.

Also, Mazinger Z deserves a max upgrade. It doesn't need it, but it'd be a shame not to. :c00lbert:

For starters lets agree with the general consensus and buy Hit and Away and E Save for Kouji. I'm happy that the Former Ability will likely be less necessary in Z2-2 because Mazinger Z get's its truly ultimate weapon.

It's worth mentioning there's a sort of kind of reason for Tieria to be basically the most traptastic character this side of Guilty Gear, but that's from 00 S2 so this isn't the time or the place.

Pity for Shiro, in the original Mazinger Z TV series he actually does get his own mecha for a little while. For like an episode Shiro gets the "Robot Junior", a baseball themed smaller take-off on the Boss Borot. To date it has appeared only in Super Robot Wars D where it had a combination attack where it knocked the Borot's head into the enemy like a Skeeball. If Super Robot Wars D wasn't completely broken mechanically it'd basically be the best SRW ever, let's hope the incredibly far-off rumors of a remake for the Vita are true and they fix the bad from the game.

Doublas and Garada are actually the most famous Mechabeasts from Mazinger. They show up in basically every incarnation, are a shoe-in for almost any SRW game that puts emphasis on Mazinger Z, showed up in the Mazinkaiser OVA, and are basically Doctor Hell's mooks in most media. Z2-1 is actually pretty unique in that the Mechabeasts are big bosses instead of just regular enemies but I think the big reason is that Doctor Hell can have grunt mecha in the form of those Talos statues. Mechabeasts are at the bottom of the food chain in Alpha, wimps in J and W, but here they're bosses to be treated with respect.

Caphi, can you swap this skill out for something better? Because this sounds like one of the worst skills for Kyrios to have. I wonder why Allelujah starts with it? Seems like a silly choice.

Also, the more I see of this game, the more I want to play it. I actually like the Gundam 00 designs, and I really like what they've done with Mazinger Z. That, plus the inclusion of one of my favourite shows (Gurren Lagaan) makes it very difficult to hold myself back from importing it.

That's because this is the excellent Shin Mazinger instead of either Mazinger Z or the weird SRW version of Mazinger Z. Next chapter is going to feature another fantastic departure from the rest of SRW re: Mazinger.

Classic Mazinger Z rules. But yeah, 20 years of having the original in pretty much every game (Mazinkaiser OVA notwithstanding), it was time to pass the torch. It helps that Shin Mazinger was actually a good show. I did not expect a remake to ever be that good, but here we are.

Hopefully, having Shin Mazinger in SRW games in the forseeable future brings enough interest for a Shin Great Mazinger to be made. It'd be great if Getter Robo got the same treatment, and I don't mean like with New Getter Robo. I'm talking Musashi, Dinosaur Empire, all that jazz, retold in the way Shin Mazinger was done. Actually, in Z2-1 they seem to have changed this. The only skills that gain ranks as the pilot levels are ones that can't be bought, though in exchange pilots start with much higher ranks in the skills than they would have in other SRW games.

It's good to have if you want to spam Koushiryoku Beam constantly, especially near the latter parts of the game during the enemy phase if you can get the enemies to focus fire on Mazinger Z.

Well, really all you'd have to do to give getter the original 'shin' treatment is to be faithful to the original manga :v: There is an amazing amount of cool set pieces available from there that would be great to see used in a SRW some day (I have recently started burning through G and the Devil King in chapter 1 alone just seems like an idea that would fit right into a stage in the Z series). Of course, there are a lot of offshoots that could really use some love as well since even the less loved stuff like Hine has insane crap like the GP-03-of-Liberty. It's a shame we won't be getting D's combo of Shin v Neo and armageddon in z2.2 tbh, since it would gel so well with the timeskip.

Because Ginga has built-in Counter, and all you have to do is equip Gatling Boar and Counter opponents with Clock Manager.

(Gear Fighter Dendoh has a weapon that inflicts the "Stun" status from OG2, making the opponent unable to act until the beginning of their next turn. Of course, if Countered, the opponent loses their attack before it even happens.) MX had a really broken Counter system, though, where the level of Counter determined how many you got per turn instead of the success rate. D wasn't so bananas but eh.

MX also had a TFO that can literally solo the entire stage if you full upgrade it (including any and all bosses). It was a very badass way of playing through the game. Even if it took forever.

(For those of you who don't know, the TFO is an UFO that Kouji MADE and literally looks like a miniture UFO. If you don't upgrade it in MX, it sucks a lot, but if you full upgrade it, it's literally untouchable due to size bonuses as well as speed bonuses.)

I haven't played Z2, but I'm still going through Z. I really love the pink beam of death in it, so I've been taking my time (that, and I cringe every time I have to use Shin...). I look forward to where this is going to go.

That's actually an urban legend as far as is known. Loran Cehack's earliest pre-production sketches actually had him as a dude and he was pretty effeminate throughout the line. I'm guessing that Tomino may have asked for him to be ultra-girly in production because his later post-depression works are an extended apology to all women everywhere after the crap he had them say in Zeta and Victory Gundam. Viewed from that angle Brain Power'd makes a LOT more sense.

Got is in one actually. I recall an interview where Imagawa actually said as much, that Mazinger Z would be given a Super Robot Wars Style move that could be a MAP attack and a really big super attack that Classic Mazinger Z lacked. He succeeded.

ImpAtom posted:

I'm SO glad someone else remembers how godly Mazinger Z was in NEO. To elaborate since I like the sound of my own typing NEO is the most nonstandard SRW by virtue of not having a grid-based map and basically changing the entire formula. It works actually, and Mazinger Z being made awesome is the result. NEO has a lot of special attributes that can be attached to weapons and leveled up, so Breast Fire can literally ignite enemies for bonus damage, Rocket Punch reduces counterattack damage when you attack with it, Iron Cutter (not in Z2) arcs over obstacles to hit things behind cover, and Missile Launcher (not in Z2 either) has very long range for NEO. Mazinger Z therefore is an all-in-one unit attack-wise plus being able to fly which is a handy feature.
