There's a quest line where you have to kill the kings?

In King's Gambit you can either spark a war between NCR and The Kings, kill Pacer without making it known that it's you who did it or use your King favor to calm poo poo down. Sometimes I'm lazy and use the favor but most of the time I just spark the war.

I don't think that there's any one specific quest, though if you don't use your favor with The King to make peace with the NCR it can get pretty bloody, if I recall correctly.

I've been playing through the DLC's all as I come along them (I bought the game at launch, but for various reasons wasn't able to get them as they came along, so I've installed them all at once). I wasn't sure which one was which so I just sort of wandered into the areas whenever I was near one, or needed some money/experience, and had nothing better to do, basically treating them like any other area.

I've played them in the order of Honest Hearts, Dead Money, Lonesome Road, and now I'm on Old World Blues. I really liked Zion and the characters and new weapons, and thought the storyline was rewarding for the amount of gameplay involved, and I liked that they were able to salvage the Burned Man's plot from Van Buren. Dead Money and Lonesome Road pulled some interesting genre shifts, I really liked what Dead Money did, although the survival-horrorish thing didn't last very long, not after I broke into the police precinct armory and found the snowglobe, effectively giving myself a machine gun and unlimited supply of ammo and while I didn't like the Lonesome Road as much, I could respect what it was trying to do.

Old World Blues, though, I just... don't like. At all. The characters are mildly amusing, but the plot is... well, I guess I haven't done very much of it so I'll reserve judgment on that, but the open world part of it is dreadful. It's a barren landscape full of nightstalkers with cliff racer syndrome. When I saw the last pack of them literally spawn out of thin air in front of me I seriously considered looking for a mod to remove them. I'm sure there's one out there. A few parts of the landscape have been somewhat interesting to explore, like the region with all the fissures and the spore carriers, small as it was, but any enjoyment is seriously hampered by having to stop every two-three minutes to pop three nightstalkers in their domes.

My understanding is that some places had reduces spawns after the patches due to slowdown on the console versions, and something in the contract saying that all versions had to be the same. Someone correct me if I have this wrong. Prim originally had more enemies outside the hotel, is the most striking difference that I noticed, but the patches started coming out before I got too far into the game.

It made sense that they had a land mined bridge with a guard to keep the thugs out of the NCR camp to begin with. After the patch it just didn't make any sense, there are like 4 guys now, and 2 of them are up on the roller coaster.

This is actually the way to get the House ending where he doesn't kill them all iirc

Start using the pipelines to get from The Sink to wherever you're going, and don't bother fighting the nightstalkers (or the roboscorpions later). It'll make your experience much more tolerable and fun.

They reduced the number of characters in the world because of memory and stability problems that, if I remember right, had to do with DLC on the consoles or something.

I'm tempted to play an unpatched game without any DLC to see if there's a big difference.

This is, sadly, more important to me than bettering myself.

As an aside on Primm being empty: the residents go to the little subdivision south-west of the Bison Steve and stay in the (owned) houses after things die down enough for them to leave the Vicky & Vance. They used to wander around the town during daylight hours, but after the second to last patch they just sit inside, waiting for their hostile countdown to go off if you wander in.

I just started another playthrough now that I have all the DLC, and there are some really strange differences. Some of the scripted encounters are a lot harder now than they used to be due to increased numbers, and then I spent about 10 minutes sneaking around Primm because I could have loving sworn that at any moment a dozen more guys would pop out and start mowing me down, only to have them never materialize. I haven't noticed any differences in other locations, yet, though. Goodsprings is about as deserted as it always seemed to be, but it'll probably become a lot more apparent when I hit New Vegas or something.

Also is there a reason why my distant LOD meshes/textures are no longer phasing out when I get close to them? I haven't noticed that ever happening before and I'm not sure if it's because of some mod I installed or if it's a new/commonish bug with the game. It's really weird to see buildings flickering between super lo-res and high res textures while my feet sink into bloated road meshes.

A few changes I noticed recently on the PS3 version were that Novac had only one random citizen and the doctor had lost her bodyguards, the Pacer/NCR shootout only had one Kings' corpse instead of three or four, and the three bodyguards next to Rotface were missing, the two Gangers that hang out next to that sky-diving school were gone and the corpses littered around the Crimson Caravan wreckage had vanished (the three Gangers were still there, though). Primm seems like the only area where they actually removed hostile combatants so far, everything else has been corpses or NPCs that have no purpose.

I haven't gotten there yet, but I hope Jacobstown survived these patches :ohdear:

Question about Caesar:

Why is he so upfront with the player about basing the Legion off ancient Rome, etc? I mean he basically admits to being a fraud in your first meeting. I thought the whole idea is that the people serving under him have no idea what Rome even was and he doesn't want them finding out?

Tubgirl Cosplay

Why should he care? Caesar's big on control for the sake of control, so he doesn't like people having access to information that isn't totally necessary to their jobs, but it's not like if a bunch of Legionaries happened to stumble across evidence that their culture had a glorious past of ancient conquest it'd be some big Zardoz deal. The 'authenticity' of Roman culture is besides the point, it's not a naturally growing thing anyway it's something he forces on people at spearpoint as another form of control. Hell, it's not like he could keep it secret if he really wanted to - general education levels are a lot lower in the postapocalyptic wasteland, but he did pick the whole thing up from a free school as nobody in particular, stuff like that is still known more or less.

And he's the spoiled intellectual product of what passes for civilization constantly surrounded by toadies pulled from neolithic cultures. Dude's lonely; he wants to chat with someone who's read a book ever before he goes ahead and burns all the books.

I played my first hours and I am on my way to Novac (Quest They went "That-A-Way") and was passing some Recruit Legionairs. After some more steps into north I went into some NCR Troopers heading south. You know what happened. NPCs throwing spears and firing rifles on each other while I was watching. :hehe: Nice, I was just able to loot them, too for bottlecaps, weapons and stuff. Are there more casual NPC (faction) fights coming?

Based on my experiences, there are patrols of each of those factions that wander around in the appropriate areas. If they detect each other battle ensues. Seen it happen dozens of times. You can also train one into the other.

You know that merchant caravan that you run into on the road to Novac? The one that usually gets slaughtered by Legionaries or Vipers? Unless I'm playing as an ally of the Legion, I make a point of ensuring that they get to Novac alive.

You must not follow the road then, if you follow the road south of nipton through the hills you come to a bridge. They are usually on the bridge and go down onto a highway that goes up to Novac. I almost always travel with them and fend off the raiders and legion since merchants are usually the only people I let live in my wasteland.

It's a way to get a more interesting encounter than just 'encountered another group of baddies in the wasteland and killed them.' The fun of playing through that encounter is the reward.

I'd really love this. It's one of the reasons I like that caravan encounter so much. I was playing through with Project Nevada and the moment Boone and I saved that caravan, a Legion assassin team showed up. By the end of it, Boone and I were the only two standing. Turns out that Brahmin make great mobile cover.
