To be fair, Sanderson could have some sort of twisted Mormon Solidarity with Meyers, which is why he doesn't really want people to badmouth the series.

The building was on fire and it wasn't my fault.
Based on Brandon's write-up of a fight between Vin and Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, I get the feeling even he is willing to pass judgement that Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth is garbage.

quote:

His eyes opened wide. "COMMUNISTS!" he yelled. Then, incredibly, he climbed up on a stump and began to address those watching. "Hear me, socialists! Your foul ways have no grounding in rational thought, and only seek to divest men of their rights! You will listen, now, as I explain, at length, why capitalism is the only method by which truth can be found and expressed."

And with that, he launched into a long-winded speech about something he called "objectivism." Vin didn't listen to much of it; she just crept her way forward, behind his back, and he blathered on and on. Was this really the best time for a lecture? She shook her head.

Right as he was getting into a definition of something he called "positive rights," she Burned atium and leaped forward, driving a glass dagger into the back of his neck. He tried to dodge, but the atium let her see the direction he'd go, and her mind adjusted immediately.

"Urk," the old man said. "And thus we see that this young lady's rational egoism is victorious in the end, and that is proof of everything I've been saying. And, unfortunately, I appear to have just proven Wizard's First Rule. . . ." He slipped and fell to the ground, eyes wide, glassy, dead.

"'Wizard's First Rule'?" Vin asked. "I mean, really. Is it too hard to say 'The First Rule of Wizardry'or 'Wizardry's First Rule'? The way you say it sounds stupid. That's always bothered me." With that, she slipped off into the darkness.

The Sword of Truth starts out okay, except for that character being introduced early in the first book, disappearing for like 300 pages, and then being fully and completely reintroduced in the same loving book for no reason. Then it turns into lesbian leather bondage fantasy stuff, then rape fantasy, and gets worse.

I suppose we're getting a bit off topic here, but I agree. The first Sword of Truth book (Wizard's First Rule) was pretty good. I mean, there's a reason a lot of us started the series, right? I can't identify exactly where the series went downhill, but it's fair to say I enjoyed it at first.

For me it was after he got tortured by a pain dildo and a little girl asked to join in, he then decided the best way to save her from torturing him was to kick her in the face hard enough to shatter her jaw.

God I love talking about the Sword of Truth books. Terry Goodkind is the best.

Funny enough, although his books are absolute poo poo, the tv show they made based upon them was really entertaining.

I only read the first Sword of Truth book, but that's exactly the part I remember most clearly. The rest is a blur of generic fantasy, but I clearly remember excessive torture and jaw kicking.

You've also got to love how the extremely capable female protagonist either gets naked in a public setting or almost-raped like every single book. Also the first book contains a like 40 page sequence where Richard gets bondage tortured by a leather clad dominatrix, but is able to escape...by falling in love with his torturer.

Goodkind is a bad man who writes books that are a source of actual evil.

Believe it or not, they actually get worse.

The series ends* with Richard instigating a giant soccer riot and then he sends non-magic people to earth and like 3 books of stuff happen that he glosses over and has nothing to do with the last book.

* Well, apparently after failing hard at writing other fiction he's gone back to the sword of truth well but is calling them something different. I haven't read those.

I've read every Sword of Truth novel. I enjoy them, though I don't believe in the bootstrapping objectivist message - I can appreciate something I don't agree with.

That said, I had a friend who loved the series. In one of the later books, Richard declares he's sending his army to the land of the main bad guy with the intent on loving it up as much as possible - killing women and children, salting the earth, all sorts of fun stuff. To show them that if you wage war against Richard and crew, there are ultimate consequences. Said friend used to use this as a discussion point on how to deal with Muslims in a post 9-11 world. "Richard is right. We just need to go over there and start killing everything and everyone until they give up. You have to hit them hard like that so they see we mean business. They only understand violence."

I liked reading the Sword of truth series. I disagree with the Ayn Rand stuff, but I actually found them extremely fun to read. Book four, Temple of the Winds, was my favorite. The book that I really hated the most, was book 7, where literally none of the main characters even appeared until the very end in the last 10 pages. My friend introduced me to the series in 2002 in my freshman year at college, I read it in 3 days.

quote:

Remember that the tables--and the ars Arcanum--are 'in world' creations. (Or, at least, in-universe.) The knowledge represented in them is as people understand it, and can always have flaws. That was the case with having atium on the table in the first place, and that was the case with people (specifically the Inquisitors) trying to figure out what atium did Hemalurgically.

Their experiments (very expensive ones) are what determined that atium (which they thought was just one of the sixteen metals) granted the Allomantic Temporal powers. What they didn't realize is that atium (used correctly) could steal ANY of the powers. Think of it as a wild card. With the right knowledge, you could use it to mimic any other spike. It works far better than other spikes as well.

Huh, I wonder what Larasium spikes would do.
EDIT: For the matter, what would the god metal alloys do in hemalurgy/ferruchemy

Considering that Hemalurgy was created from whole cloth by Ruin after he was imprisoned, probably nothing at all. Just to spite Preservation that much more.

I don't think it would be spite. It's a pretty important plot point in-setting that (major Hero of Ages spoilers) Vin can't draw on the mists while even faintly Hemalurgically empowered. The notion of the essence of Preservation being useful in an explicitly Ruin-derived empowerment goes against this as well. You see the same thing with the whole 'Preservation can't destroy' stuff, which leads to his overarching plan for the books.

Well, here's the thing. What Sazed is right now is something of a god in the classic Greek sense--a superpowered human being, elevated to a new stage of existence. Not GOD of all time and space. In a like manner, there are things that Sazed does not have power over. For instance, he couldn't bring Vin and Elend back.

Where Tindwyl exists is beyond space and time, in a place Sazed hasn't learned to touch yet. He might yet. If you want to add in your heads him working through that, feel free. But as it stands at the end of the book, he isn't yet with Tindwyl. (He is, however, with Kelsier--who refused to "Go toward the light" so to speak, and has been hanging around making trouble ever since he died. You can find hints of him in MB3 at the right moments.

I hope Kelsier stays dead, or at least does nothing more than influence things from behind the scenes as a spirit-y thing. Brandon really does not need to verge into the resurrection rut that kills a lot of fantasy.

The problem is that resurrected characters are very hard to give decent character arcs, especiallly characters who have already progressed through a decent arc. The one exception I can think of is Buffy season 4, I think, when she's forcibly pulled from heaven.

So I liked the Mistborn Trilogy and Alloy of Law. Still haven't read his WoT books because I've only read the first three (and I dread reading the ones after that based on what people have told me). So the Stormlight Archives series is pretty good though? I wasn't a huge fan of Rothfuss' writing is the only thing and the OP claims that it's comparable to that.
