I'm still kicking myself for missing Om last week. If that article is correct, sounds like the new album is going to be more complex than their previous stuff (+ this video preview I posted earlier hints that way too http://vimeo.com/39645699).

Interviews with Baizley basically say not as heavy, and more hooks than the Blue Record - also a bit more simpler song structure as well (I maybe misremembering that bit). If anyone's into dISEMBOWELMENT or death/doom in general, some previous members are now in a band called Inverloch that is pretty awesome and basically sounds like a continuation of where they left off.

First YOB set at Roadburn 2012 ended with them playing 'Adrift in the Ocean' (arguably the best song on Atma). I almost loving wept with happiness near the end of the song, goddamn.

Saw Orange Goblin on Thursday and they were great. I'm not a particularly huge fan but they had a lot of energy and really seemed to be enjoying themselves. The setlist had a lot of variety too rather than just stuff from Eulogy.

I'm normally not a fan of metal, but I've recently discovered I love stoner-sludge metal and that I absolutely love Sleep's Jerusalem and Dopesmoker. I'm a fan of Electric Wizard's Dopethrone and Come My Fanatics too. Not so much a fan of the other stoner-sludge that was posted in the OP besides Black Sabbath. Could anyone suggest albums most similar to Jerusalem and Dopesmoker? I'm looking for something sludgy, slow, and shoegaze-y, like Sleep's later work or the more recent Have A Nice Day's Deathconsciousness. Thanks for any suggestions...

I would suggest Ufomammut and Bongripper. Maybe YOB if you want more shoegazey. edit: Also, if you didn't know, Sleep split into two different bands: Matt Pike formed High on Fire, and the other two formed Om. High on Fire became faster and thrashier, Om kept going in the direction of fuzzed out and droney. plester1 fucked around with this message at 03:27 on Apr 15, 2012 |

Definitely seconding Om; they generally have an even more laid-back feel than Sleep. The Angelic Process are often cited as good doom/shoegaze, although I can't say I've ever thought too much of them myself. I might also recommend Feedbacker by Boris, though they have a very broad stylistic range and most of it isn't really in this vein. Horseback might be worth a look; although there's a healthy amount of drone/noise and black metal influence in there too, they do some pretty doomy stuff. More recently, Vulgaari's self-titled definitely reminded me of older Wizard stuff.

The second preview of the new Ahab album is up. I can't say I like this as much as the first one, and I'm starting to fear that the stupid cover art is indicative of what they're going to do musically. Nothing in this song grabs me. I won't go so far as to say it's boringly generic, but that land is within sight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xth6w_IuZyE

Oh I didn't like Ulver. I fell asleep sitting on a step, so loving boring. I was expecting it to be like last December's show here in Portugal, they played a lot of old Ulver songs (nothing blackmetal), even some of my classic favorites... Huge disappointment but I was already spent that day anyway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvXaLZZ6M3M Voivod's cover of Astronomy Domine was one of the best moments I remember from the weekend, a bunch of musicians down there all jumping and singing with everyone else. I'm so glad I couldn't sell my ticket.
