Fights begin, finger prints are took, days is lost, bail is made, court dates are ignored, cycle is repeated.
I know this might be a long shot, but I was curious if anyone knew the name of a documentary on Russian mail-order brides. I don't remember much, but one of the men thought it would help bridge the language barrier by speaking with a Russian accent to the girl.

The bat with a ZING
I really liked how they handled talhotblond and the twist:

I think the point they were trying to make was that Mary was at least partly responsible, and behaving as she did was dangerous. I don't think they made light of Tom's role in the act, even if his own words did. I'm glad the focus was on the overall implications of pretending to be someone online, and this applied to Tom and Mary. I'm really glad this was the case, because it meant Mary's actions were not simply masked by the horrific murder. Indeed, it was refreshing that the murder was the direct focus
The dead kid narrating was stupid, though.

I get that, but I still feel that the doc was made in a way as to really push the misogyny hard. I might be more sensitive than average to that particular angle, though.

I'm curious if anyone's watched Grey Gardens or the dramatization of it's filming with Drew Barrymore. I am fascinated by the story and all it's little details, like how they were related to the Bouvier's, but oh my gosh I couldn't listen to those two sniping at each other. Pretty sad weird story, though. I must admit I made it through the Hollywood version a lot easier. I wanted to love that doc, but listening to people bicker isn't one of my favorite things. They fascinated me though, as does the house and the whole weird story.

Louis Theroux's new one on dementia. This Extreme Love series has been very solid but at the same time crushingly sad. I heard him on 5 live the other day and he was saying he's returning to some of he people he talked to from his Weird Weekends porno episode in an upcoming episode. Should be interesting!

The porn one was supposed to be broadcast on BBC this week I think, but it would have followed a cooking program enjoyed by the over 60s and they didn't think it was a good idea to ram porn down the throats of old people who didn't switch channels.

No Yanda's allowed
My fiance recently bought me a Beavis and Butthead DVD that had a bunch of episodes as well as the documentary "Taint of Greatness" on it. It was awesome to watch a documentary about the show and the reaction, just a fun watch. There's one part where one of the artists/writers ( I forget) is talking about hate mail the show got from kids in grade six, and the letters were like "take your show off the air or I will be angry. I have guns." :stare:
If you're not a fan of the show you still might enjoy it, Mike Judge is a really smart guy and it's cool to hear him talk about his work, you'd have to be pretty smart to pull off shows like Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill for sure.

Pictures of Greaser-Man!
A co worker showed me the trailer to a documentary and I could not, for the life of me remember the name of it. The trailer starts off with a skinhead holding a gun to the camera threatening to kill any cop that tries to come and get him. The trailer goes on to show that he was once a well mannered privileged kid who was a gifted surfer and mma fighter. But a brief stint in prison changed him into a hardened white supremacist.

Any help finding this trailer or just the title alone would be appreciated.

A documentary about 13-year-old Deborah Drapper, who, unlike other British teens has never heard of Britney Spears or Victoria Beckham. She has been brought up in a deeply Christian family and her parents have tried to make sure she and her ten brothers and sisters have grown up protected from the sins of the outside world.

Deborah is a bright, confident girl who has big ambitions for her life and the film spends a summer with her as she ventures out in the world to see what life outside her family could be and starts putting her beliefs forward to a wider audience.

Watched this last night and it was scary in its own way--a thirteen year old girl with no hobbies but 'witnessing' to other teenagers. The crying at the end did me in.

He was quite before my time, yet became and remains one of my favourite comedians. If you haven't heard of Tommy Cooper you need to look him up on youtube now. His jokes are terrible, his magic tricks flirt between excellent and tragic and a lot of the time it looks like he has no idea what he's doing, but it all comes together so perfectly. Such an interesting character too. I'd be intrigued as to how non-English people find his humour.

And yet, somehow, now it's my fault ...
Strangely enough, I just watched talhotblonde. It's a good documentary, but I agree there's a few parts of it that seem a bit "off":

- The narration by the dead victim. It's fine, even effective, up to the point when he starts saying what his regrets are or what he wants to tell people. To me, that crosses the line between a narrative device to just making things up.
- The doco does seem to be trying to stitch the mother up, while exercising strange restraint around marine sniper. Sure, she's unpleasant and disturbed , but the worst crimes she can be accused of are impersonation and knowledge of a possible crime. Perhaps it makes for a better story, but the demands for laws to "stop this sort of thing" are unexamined. What sort of law? To stop what?

Did you feel like the documentary angled that the brother was gay? He is literally introduced by being catty and also tells multiple stories about how scantily clad women are gross and when attractive women hit on him he's all ew.

I don't know. I can definitely see it, but there was so much wrong with all of it. I think he was spot on about how sad it was that his sister was so wrapped up in people going to hell versus normal life and people getting the chance to go to heaven. I expected him to be more normal since he was living away from them, but I'm not so sure..maybe it was just the way he was played up, but he seemed just as nuts as the rest of them.

Caine’s Arcade

This little nugget of fun will be the best 11 minutes of your week. Enjoy. Here is the description from Documentary Storm but it might be better to go into it not knowing much:

"This documentary is guaranteed to make you smile or your money back! In this time of a tough economy, it’s inspiring to see the next generation of entrepreneurs starting to emerge from the shadows. Caine’s Arcade is the true story of Cain Monroy, a 9 year old boy who has built his own arcade out of cardboard. Caine Monroy lives in a working class area of Los Angeles. His father has a used auto parts store. It’s not the safest area of LA and the auto parts store does most of its business online. In 2011, Caine spent his summer days in his dad”s store. At first, he busied himself by helping with the inventory. Soon, he started using the empty boxes to build an arcade game. After awhile, his arcade took up most of the lobby. Caine made himself a shirt, worked out a system for keeping track of tickets, and continued to build his arcade. He devised a crane. He devised a point system and prizes to be won."

The only problem? Nobody really came to the store. Finally, Caine got his first customer. It would change his summer plans forever.

nothing against you, but i guess that's how it goes once you're initially tricked into believing something and truly take it as truth the entire time (religion!), and then once you find out it's really fake then it's not as easy to say "man, screw those people for making me think it was real", but usually people end up reaffirming their initial thoughts for the most part ("i enjoyed the ride") because it's the easier route to take.

i'm probably just looking too much into that statement of yours.

No, it was just a well told story the way it all unfolded on camera. I watched it again with my parents and it was still entertaining, but I think most of the fun is watching it with people who don't know the twist yet. I get your point though, I just felt it was a good movie either way.
